” Today, due to government negligence on professional wrestling, most of our youths who would have been useful to themselves, the society and the country, now turn themselves to kidnappers and armed robbers due to lack of job opportunities. For this reason we have decided to combat this menace using the game of professional wrestling as a tool to entice our youths,we are going to introduce mentorship program to the Federal Government and Governors of our 36states”.

“Our target is to train at least 15 youths from each of the 774 local government areas, at the end of the two weeks training and mentoring,we would have succeeded in impacting the lives of more than 11,610 youths as we would stage an international wrestling championship in an effort to promote the game after the two weeks training “he stated.

Chief Aguene who is the United Nation Ambassador of Peace noted that Nigerians are confronted with so much adversity, insecurity and problems that has castrated the economy, noting that if the youths who are future leaders engage in sporting activities especially those who have nothing to do,it will reduce the influx of restive youths out of the streets.

He said ” this is a wonderful entertainment,l want to commend the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation for organizing such event by taking up the bold step in ensuring that the restive youths are engaged in sporting activities like this”

“This will help in evacuating the restive youths out the streets so as to be useful to themselves, the society and the country at large. Sports can take any youth to another level,to another pinnacle of their life and also help in reducing crime and restiveness in our system. I want to appeal to government to come and assist in developing more talents in wrestling competitions by supporting and ensuring that the NPWF gets the right statutory budget”he stated.

In his remarks, General Manager of the hotel, Victor Ekekwe stated that he was overwhelmed with what he saw at the two day event, noting that his organisation being a sports friendly one will always partner with NPWF to popularize the sports.

” I’m really amazed with what I witnessed throughout the duration of the championship. Prior to this time, I had the believe that wrestling is stage managed but seeing these great men and women right here in front of me fighting themselves, my perception for the game changed.

” All our customers really enjoyed themselves, rooting for more action as the fights lasted and I appeal to government at all levels to take special interest in this game, invest in it and I can assure you, we’ll produce many world champions in no distant time”, he stressed.

However, the most entertaining fight of the night which kept fans asking for more action as it lasted was between Captain Dunga and Power Vic,the fight was action packed and so brutal that at a stage, they took the fight to outside the ring which prompted the referee to disqualify both fighters.

Murder of 38yrs Ubanna: Activist hopeful justice will be served

    By Joy Kalu, Owerri

An advocate of protection of human rights who has been facilitating the case and the Executive Director of Grooming Leadership Network Amb Okey J-T Anyanwu informed that justice will be served.

In a document presented to the Investigator news, he said, though he is not quite at home with legal interpretation of the No-Case Submission, however, he has every reason to believe that it means the Suspect has submitted himself guilty, as he has nothing to defend himself with.

According to him, ‘I have great confidence in the Presiding Judge who has displayed intelligence and high wisdom since this case began, would certainly uphold justice. It is equally important to appreciate the judiciary as Social Architect that would not permit a criminal to escape unpunished or provide a clause which could promote criminality, especially with the prevailing and increasing level violent crimes in Nigeria in general and Imo state in particular’.

Amb Okey further buttressed that marshalling out a deserved justice and punishment against crimes and criminals are surest deterrents to continuous and increasing spate of killings, kidnappings, and other violent crimes that have bedeviled our nation. It is a common maxim that Justice for One is Justice for All.

It would be recalled that on Friday 15th of March 2024, the Owerri High Court in Imo State of Nigeria witnessed continued hearing on the murder of Late Engr. Ubanna Henry Iroegbu, the 38yrs graduate of Agricultural Engineering from Umuoma Onicha, in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA of Imo State. It would be recalled from previous reports on this criminal matter that witnessed during the prosecution proceedings, informed the court how this promising Late Engr. Ubanna, a 2019 Agricultural Engineering graduate of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike was gruesomely shot to death on the 28th of December, 2021. On that ill-fated day, he was said to had gone to Umueleagwa in the same Onicha clan of Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA, following a distress call from his junior sister Mrs Ugomma Judith Aguwa- Nee Iroegbu complained of an attack and threats to kill her by one Chief Michael Ugorji Aguwa an in-Law (brother to Ugomma’s father-in-law).

According to the police investigation report and confirmed by eye-witnesses’ account, Mrs. Ugomma Aguwa whose husband Mr. Celestine Aguwa is resident in United Kingdom, came home from her base in Port Harcourt for the 2021 Christmas celebration. In the morning hours of that 28th day of December 2021, Chief Michael Ugorji Aguwa, an uncle to her husband, attacked and further threaten to shoot her to death when next he sets eyes on her, for a yet to be justified reason.

Late Engr Ubanna Henry Iroegbu, who went on an arbitration mission to Chief Michael’s house, ended up a dead corpse out of gun shot inside the suspect’s compound. Besides his earlier threats, eye-witnesses, including Chief Ugorji’s personal guest and his brother, clearly indicts him as the murderer. These accusing fingers are in addition to other accounts testifying of seeing Chief Michael Ugorji Aguwa openly shooting sporadically to scare away onlookers and sympathizers from apprehending him or rescuing the dying Engr. Ubanna Henry Iroegbu.

“Following an earlier closure of prosecution to enable the suspect commence his defense, resumption of proceedings on that Friday 15th of March 2024 witnessed the Defense Counsel presenting and adopting a ‘No Case Address’. The Counsel insisted that the presiding Judge should discard and consider all accusations and witnesses against his client (Suspect) in respect of Late Engr Ubanna, Henry Iroegbu’s death as mere speculations”.

“According to the Defense Counsel, who did not deny cross-examining the witnesses, the Suspect (Chief Michael Aguwa) being at the point and time of the incident with a gun and shooting as presented by the witnesses, implies no clear evidence that the suspect shot directly at Late Ubanna or was responsible for his death. It is therefore mere speculation that having a gun and shooting makes his client the murderer of the deceased, Defense Counsel submitted.
The Prosecuting Counsel in his response, reminded the court the all accounts from eye witnesses as presented in the court during prosecution, clearly pointed accusing fingers on Michael Ugorji Aguwa as being responsible for Late Ubanna’s untimely death”.

“According to the Prosecutor, this is with particular reference to PW-1 who was a personal guest to the suspect and was physically present in his (suspect’s) house when and where this murder was committed. This witness presented enough eye witness account to convince court that the suspect was the only person holding a gun within his premises and at the time of the incident”. He equally substantiated his witness by stated that he saw the suspect bring out his gun and from beside him (witness) shot. This position according to the Prosecuting Counsel is collaborated by other witnesses who saw the suspect with the gun and shooting sporadically to scare people away after the deceased has fallen from the gun shoot and was bleeding.

“Further clear evidence was from Mr Edmund Aguwa a senior brother to the suspect, who personally admitted directing Late Engr. Ubanna Iroegbu to his younger brother’s house and heard his younger brother (Chief Michael Aguwa) ordering Late Ubanna to leave his compound or he (Michael) would shoot him (Ubanna) to death and nobody is capable of challenging his (Michael’s) action. Mr Edmund Aguwa further testified that the suspect has in the last decade being very notorious for brandishing his gun publicly and always when provoked to any slightest level, would threaten to shot someone”.

“According to Mr. Edmund, he personally as his senior brother, has been living as a fugitive in his own compound after this his younger brother (Michael Ugorji Aguwa) has in December 2019, walked up to him (Edmund) before his (Edmund’s) wife, children and grandchildren and warned him to prepare himself and put his house in order, with a stern threat that he (Michael) would in December 2021 shot him (Edmund) to death and off-set the cost of the burial and would entertain no challenge from any quarter.”

“Buttressing why the suspect has a case to answer, the Prosecutor reminded the court that the ‘No-Case Address’ by the Defense Counsel should be demised as derailing the cause of Justice, considering that it is tantamount to rubbishing all the testimonies from eye-witnesses against the suspect in the proceedings before the Judge”.

“Equally, a No-case submission amounts to declaring that a civilian should freely possess gun, publicly use same to threaten and harass fellow citizen. This is most worrisome with the high level of insecurity in the country. Moreover, in this particular case there was an earlier threat to kill with a gun by the suspect according to witnesses, later this same suspect had a visitor die by gun shot inside his compound, there is therefore enough cause to the case for the suspect to answer before the law”.

“This No-Case Address should vehemently be discarded as unacceptable, considering that there are no contradictions between the incident, witnesses and evidences presented before court”.

The deceased was confirmed to have visited the suspect’s house on that 28th of December! 2021, died of gun-shot inside the suspect’s compound with only the suspect being in possession of a gun at that point and time of the murder. This is confirmed by with the witness accounts of two medical experts certifying that the deceased died as a result of gun shot through his scapula or shoulder’, the Prosecuting Counsel submitted.

According to Amb. Anyanwu, the Presiding Judge at this point called for closure of further arguments, reminding both Counsels that they have all made written submissions that he (The Judge) needs to study. He therefore adjourned the matter till 6th of June, 2024 for further deliberation and ruling.

The general public, Ahiara Mbaise Catholic Community, Onicha clan and other ardent followers of this high profile murder case, which has been on since January 2022 would patiently wait for further updates come June 6th, 2024. Certainly, so many questions would meet answers before the Presiding Judge when both the Prosecuting and Defense Counsels meet on the next adjourned date.

WHY IMO STATE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PRODUCE THE NEXT VICE CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA NSUKKA (UNN), PART ONE

    Opinion

It is no longer news that the tenure of Prof Charles Igwe as Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka will end in June 2024.

As should be expected, some interests eyeing the Vice Chancellorship position have started consultations and scheming, which is very normal in any sociopolitical environment. Nevertheless, certain factors or variables should be looked into when the choice of the would-be successor is being considered.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka, as our premier University in the Southeast, was established in 1960, 64 years ago, and has produced Vice Chancellors from each of the five States in the Southeast, with the exception of Imo State. Indeed, of the six Federal Universities in the Southeast, none has an Imo indigene as Vice Chancellor. Three of the Vice Chancellors are from Ebonyi State, one is from Abia State, while two are from Anambra State. However, University of Nigeria Nsukka is in Enugu State. Conversely, from this simple elementary arithmetic, Imo State is clearly marginalized and unfairly treated in the arrangement. Yet the history of the University of Nigeria Nsukka will not be complete without giving Imo Professors a resounding mention, due to their numerous contributions to the growth of the University, both nationally and internationally.

As if the injustice (and unfair treatment) against Imo State is not enough, on the issue of Vice Chancellorship position in UNN, No Imo indigene has in the last 20 years occupied the following Principal positions in the University :

    1. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics).

    2. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration).

    3. Chief Registrar.

    4. Bursar.

    5. Chief Librarian.

From the above, one can safely argue that there appears to be a grand conspiracy against Imo State, which is a critical stakeholder in the Southeast, from occupying the Vice Chancellorship position of this worthy institution.

As stated earlier, a roll call of those who have been Vice Chancellors of this Citadel of Research and Learning, from 1960 to date, confirm that no Imo citizen has occupied the respected position, despite the fact that available records show Imo State has more Professors than any other State in the Southeast.

    1. Dr George Marion Johnson (American), from 1960- 1964.

    2. Prof Glen Targgat (American), from 1964- 1966.

    3. Prof Eni Njoku (Abia), from 1966- 1971.

    4. Prof H. C. Kodilinye (Anambra), from 1971- 1975..

    5. Prof J. O. C. Ezeilo (Anambra), from 1975- 1978.

    6. Prof Umaru Shehu (Bornu), from 1978- 1980.

    7. Prof Frank Ndili (Delta), from 1980- 1985.

    8. Prof Chimere Ikoku (Abia), from 1985- 1992.

    9. Prof Oleka Udeala (Abia), from 1992- 1995.

    10. Prof Umaru Gomwalk (Plateau), from 1995- 1997.

    11. Prof Ginigeme Mbanefoh (Anambra), from 1997- 2004.

    12. Venerable Prof Chinedu Nebo (Enugu), from 2094- 2009.

    13. Bartho Okolo (Enugu), from 2009- 2014.

    14. Prof Benjamin C. Ozumba (Anambra), from 2014- 2019.

    15. Prof Charles A. Igwe (Anambra), from 2019- 2024 (June).

However, it should be noted that the University of Nigeria Nsukka, which prides herself, arguably, as the only University with the most intimidating facilities that are highly rated, has suitable scholars, at any point in time, to occupy the position of Vice Chancellorship, whenever the tenure of the incumbent nears to an end. Furthermore, since it is crystal clear that Imo State is very long overdue to produce or become the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, it should be allowed to be the next VC, after Professor Charles Igwe’s position expires in June 2024. From any angle anybody views it, Imo State should be supported, this time around, by all the stakeholders of the famous University. There are many erudite Professors in the University, of Imo State origin, who have distinguished themselves in their different areas of discipline, and who are most qualified for the position of Vice Chancellorship. These erudite Professors of Imo State origin have consistently promoted the image of UNN, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, through their academic prowess and commendable quality research work.

To this end therefore, among the creme of Imo Erudite Professors in the University of Nigeria Nsukka, five names features as the most eminently qualified to occupy the Vice Chancellorship seat, vis-a-vis, their curriculum vitae, years of service, experiences, local and international exposures, administrative capacities, leadership qualities and most importantly, they are scandal-free.

These five names are as follows :

    1. Professor Peter Akah.

    2. Professor Bond Ugochukwu Anyaehie.

    3. Professor B. G. Nworgu.

    4. Professor Obioma Njoku.

    5. Professor P. Chigbu.

In the coming days and weeks, I will dissect these five erudite scholars for the whole world to see through, after which the eventual choice would naturally emerge, to the Glory of Almighty God. Nevertheless, I am once again calling on all the stakeholders to join this crusade of ensuring that the Vice Chancellorship seat comes to Imo State, because it is our “Omilekan” — It is our turn.

For the 64 years existence of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, nobody of Imo State origin has become the Vice Chancellor of the University, and this situation has put a feeling of conspiracy, marginalization and , indeed, isolation on the very good people of Imo State. This is time to correct this imbalance and remedy the situation.

    It is our turn.

    I Rest My Pen.
