  • OCHANJA ROAD, FAKE NEWS AND DANGERS OF A SINGLE STORY

OCHANJA ROAD, FAKE NEWS AND DANGERS OF A SINGLE STORY

    By Christian Aburime

In 2009, the world-esteemed, multiple-award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie delivered a poignant TED Talk titled “The Danger of a Single Story”.

In it, she cautioned against the perils of viewing individuals or communities through narrow, one-dimensional lenses.

Chimamanda astutely highlighted how this limited perspective fosters misunderstandings, perpetuates stereotypes, and distorts reality itself.

Her words resonate powerfully today, as we continue to confront the pervasive threat of fake news in Nigeria. A single story, as Chimamanda eloquently described, becomes the lens through which we perceive the world.

It shapes our judgments, colours our interactions, and restricts our understanding of complex issues. When we succumb to the allure of a single narrative, we forsake the richness of objectivity and embrace a distorted version of reality. This often breeds jaundiced perceptions, campaigns of calumny and discord in society, which can lead to anarchy.

Nowhere is this danger more evident than in the epidemic of fake news sweeping through Nigeria in general and Anambra State especially. With the rise of social media and digital communication, citizen journalism has grown rapidly and with it mischief has grown too.

Misinformation now spreads like wildfire, unchecked and unverified. In our eagerness to consume sensationalised content, we forfeit our critical thinking skills and succumb to the allure of the single story.

Consider the recent viral video depicting a purportedly washed-out road in Ochanja, Anambra State after a downpour and resultant flooding. Upon the reckless circulation of the video by the mischief-maker, hasty conclusions were drawn, assumptions were made, and condemnations were unleashed on the Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, and his government.

The online mob, fueled by incomplete information and unchecked biases, launched into a frenzy of outrage. Yet, as the dust settled, the truth emerged: the video was a misleading footage, a capture of half-truths and misrepresentations.

What transpired was not an exposure of government negligence or incompetence, but rather a proof of the dangers of a single story.

The road in question was neither poorly constructed, nor has it been commissioned as alleged. It was a case of misinterpretation, fueled by the insidious spread of fake news, because the road is still under ongoing construction.

In reality, the alleged damage to the road was a mere consequence of inclement rainfall and construction procedures.

According to professional explanations by both the contracting firm and the Commissioner for Works in Anambra State, what happened was that the construction engineers were laying the last bit of asphalt on the paver when it started to rain on Monday 25, March 2024, and the base course on which the asphalt was laid was wet.

When the engineers noticed that the base course was wet, they cut off the portion that was laid on the wet surface and used it to fill the adjoining street, which the mischief-maker’s video captured as part of the roads commissioned.

The cut-off section of the road was less that 600mm. This cutting of asphalt laid on wet surface is in line with industry best practices and also shows compliance with international standards in road construction. Besides, it is crucial to state that the flood occasioned by the downpour and the flooding from the blocked culvert did not affect the road pavement of the road as laid.

Thus, the trending video deliberately included a misleading footage of a different, already existing road that is not under construction; yet, unsuspecting Nigerians online saw the video and typically started rambling “See the road Soludo just commissioned.” What a mob of ignoramuses and fake news traffickers fill the cyberspace! Even mainstream mass media carelessly carried the video and fake news without verification.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of critical thinking and responsible journalism. In an era where information is disseminated at the speed of light, we must exercise caution and discernment.

We cannot afford to be passive consumers and spreaders of information, blindly accepting the narratives thrust upon us. As Nigerians, we bear a collective responsibility to combat the scourge of fake news.

We must question the sources of videos, scrutinise the validity of claims, and demand accountability from those who seek to deceive us. We must resist the allure of the single story and embrace the objectivity of the world around us.

This also applies to political rivals in Anambra State who are subjective single-storytellers, intentionally reinforcing false narratives against the leadership of Governor Soludo just to score cheap points.

The dangers of a single story are manifold, but so too are the opportunities for enlightenment and understanding.

Let Ndi Anambra heed the wisdom of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and reject the seduction of simplistic, one-sided narratives. Let us embrace the wholeness of perspectives and strive for a more nuanced understanding of issues and our leaders.

In doing so, we safeguard not only the truth but also the integrity of our democracy and societal peace. Please let’s avoid the dangers of a Single-story!

Ochanja Road: Traders Protest in Support of Governor Soludo’ s Road infrastructure.

…..urges desperate Politicians to support Gov Soludo’s Administration.

    Emmanuel Clement.

In order to have quality roads and more dividends of democracy in Anambra state, traders and residents of Ochanja market, onitsha in Anambra State on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest against the falsehood of some desperate politicians inorder to discredit the good road works of Soludo in the area.

The protestants in their various placards with inscription “Uzo Soludo”, “Ochanja road is standard”,”Our tax is working “, Support our amiable Governor for more projects”stormed the Street of Ochanja Onitsha, urging the evil men to allow the governor to continue with his good road construction in their area.

The leader of the protesting groups, Chief Okwudili Obinwanne, said that the traders and residents decided to go into protest so as to correct some impressions about the Governor and protest against the antics of some desperate politicians who are sparing no effort in an attempt to discredit the good work that Governor Soludo is doing in Ochanja, Onitsha and Anambra State as a whole.

Read also:Ochanja Road is Still Ongoing —Anambra Government .

Chief Obinwanne went further to state that for over four decades, subsequent governments including this opposition government did not think it wise of reconstructing or doing any meaningful palliative on the Ochanja road, stating that the road was dusty and bad until the story changed when Governor Soludo’s administration came into power.

“I want to let the world to know that as far as the traders and residents is concerned nothing is wrong with the road. The contractor was putting the initial layer of asphalt on the road when the very first major rain in Anambra fell with the attendant flood unseating the hot asphalt that is yet to settle on the stone base and cement stabilization components that had earlier been compacted on the stretch of road.”

” Moreso, the quality of roads are Julius Berger standard, with street lights to match, we will not tolerate any politician that dares to play dirty politics with our welfare.” he stated.

Another residents,Mrs Imelda Akunobi said that since 1999, no governor has remembered the road until Governor Soludo came in.

She opined that during her years in active service as an educationist through the ochanja road, they would carry spare shoes and dresses to change when they get to school, while describing the governor as a game changer.

The excited market traders and residents sang the praises of Governor Soludo as they matched up and down the Ochanja road under construction.

It will be recalled that a recent video trending on social media and recycled by mainstream media depicts a washed-out portion of the road due to flood, accompanied by false claims that the road was poorly constructed and commissioned weeks ago by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

IMO: Lawmakers Commends Governor Uzodinma Over $1.5 Billion lnvestment From Afrexim Bank For Infrastructure Development Of the State.

    Emmanuel lkpeama.

Impressed with the continued patriotic commitment to make Imo State the Economic Hub of the Southeast in Nigeria and for stability, the Imo State House Of Assembly has commended the State Governor, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma over his latest move to inject $1.5 Billion infrastructure investment from African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank).

The Member Representing Ngor-Okpala State Constituency, Rt Hon Prince Obinna Egu, PhD,in a motion at the floor of the house, described the action of Governor Uzodimma as a move aimed to spur economic growth, infrastructure development and job creation in the State, and by extension, the entire Southeast.

Hon Obinna Egu, who described Governor Uzodimma as a great thinker who thinks outside the box, stated that since Imo State has the highest gas deposit in the country, there would be industrial clusters, with the current initiative, and electricity challenges will be a thing of the past.

According to him,the Governor’s goal is to accelerate the pace of development in Imo State and create opportunities for Imo people and its residents, hence partnering with Afrexim Bank which unveils a unique opportunity to achieve this goal that will unlock the full economic potential of the State” he stated.

Hon Egu, who is the House Committee Chairman On Science And Technology went further to explain the benefits of the collaboration between the State Governor and Afrexim Bank, while expressing joy that his Constituency would be one of the beneficiaries, as the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport would be upgraded and that the Internally Generated Revenue base of the State would also experience an increase.
“The collaboration holds immense promise for the prosperity and geometric growth of Imo State, economically, socially and competitively. This is a Win-win situation for Ndimo. We must also note that in the governor’s first term, he attracted a lot of investment from development partners, taking advantage of his background in the private sector.”

“We saw his commendable achievements in all sectors of the economy, during the inauguration for his second term, just two months ago, His Excellency assured us that he would intensify efforts to explore other avenues that would make the abundant human and natural resources in the state exploitable. Two months later, we have seen the ongoing construction of flyover in the State capital, the reconstruction of Imo International Conference Center, IICC, and the dredging of Urashi river into the Atlantic ocean. It is therefore evident that Governor Uzodimma’s second term administration is focussing more on the commitment to the vision of transforming the state into a beacon of hope and changing the economic landscape for good”.Hon Egu Submitted.

In their various submissions, the lawmakers agreed that Governor Uzodimma, having put the state on the global map noted that if part of the investment coming from Afrexim Bank,is channeled into electricity generation,it would make the State to be in a position to sell to other States and for export.

The lawmakers expressed happiness that His Excellency has shown serious commitment to transform the state’s vast arable land, gas reserves and many other natural resources into a multi-revenue streams and employment opportunities for some of the unemployed population.

  • Val Ozigbo’s “Wake Up Series”: A Cesspit Of Junk Verbiage

Val Ozigbo’s “Wake Up Series”: A Cesspit Of Junk Verbiage

“However, upon closer examination, it become apparent that Ozigbo’s “Wake Up” criticisms are not only trashy ranting of a characterless ant, but also indicative of his own crass ignorance and opportunism.”

    By Christian Aburime

Politics remains a dynamic field in which some gentlemen come to serve with sincerity, while many others are unscrupulous invaders out to grab power and relevance by all means.

Admittedly, in the cutthroat arena of universal politics, it is not uncommon for rivals to resort to desperate measures to undermine their opponents. However, in Anambra State, some rivals these days descend so low to the most abhorrent cesspit of junk verbiage.

So shameless, manners-less and shorn of any modicum of decency they are, that they weave tissues of lies to pass off as truth just to sway public opinion. Such is the case with Val Ozigbo, a gubernatorial aspirant of the Labour Party in Anambra State, who, having failed woefully to be elected governor in 2021 as a PDP flag-bearer, has now hopped on a new platform to chase shadows.

Sadly, his only strategy of launching his delusionary campaign is by attacking and insulting the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR.

After holding a so-called press interaction with some journalists in Anambra State during which he exhibited crass emptiness, he has followed up by outing a vacuous “Wake Up Series” video through which he wants to “hold Governor Soludo accountable” with magisterial impunity.

However, upon closer examination, it become apparent that Ozigbo’s “Wake Up” criticisms are not only trashy ranting of a characterless ant, but also indicative of his own crass ignorance and opportunism.

First and foremost, Ozigbo lacks the authority to hold Governor Soludo accountable. Accountability to the people of Anambra State lies squarely with its citizens, not with political opportunists seeking to exploit the political landscape for personal gain.

The people of Anambra have entrusted Governor Soludo with their mandate, and it is to them alone that he is answerable. One of Ozigbo’s unintelligent assertions is that Governor Soludo does not listen to or take advice. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Governor Soludo is known for his commitment to consultation and inclusivity in governance.

He actively seeks out the input and expertise of stakeholders from various sectors, understanding that the best decisions are often informed by diverse perspectives. So, Ozigbo’s attempt to paint Governor Soludo as a ‘Mr. Know It All’ or ‘One-Man-Show’ who is indifferent to advice not only lacks substance but also demonstrates his own detachment from reality.

Also, Ozigbo’s claim that Governor Soludo’s first two years in office have been devoid of progress is not only misleading but also disingenuous. Governor Soludo’s administration has made significant strides in various sectors, including security, roads, energy, economy, transportation, education, health, agriculture, and human capital development.

Read also:OZIGBO’S FALSE NARRATIVES ON SOLUDO’S STEWARDSHIP

From multi-sector infrastructure projects to social welfare initiatives, the impact of Governor Soludo’s policies is palpable across the state. Ozigbo’s blatant disregard for these achievements betrays his own bias and agenda. If he needs more education on what the Soludo administration has achieved, the government would be willing to take Ozigbo on a verification tour.

Furthermore, Ozigbo’s comparison of Governor Soludo to individuals from other states, such as Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, is both arbitrary and irrelevant. The socio-political dynamics of Anambra State are unique, and any meaningful assessment of governance must take into account the local context.

If ignorant critics like Ozigbo must know, Governor Soludo is doing much more in Anambra State without taking any loan from anywhere, unlike others who are borrowing endlessly to build on quicksand. Ozigbo’s failure to grasp this fundamental principle exposes his lack of insight and foresight.

It is also worth noting that Ozigbo is a complete political neophyte and his glaring lack of political or governance experience renders him unfit to pass judgment on Governor Soludo’s government.

Managing a hotel business after a career in banking hardly qualifies him to assess the complexities of public administration. His audacity to position himself as a voice of authority on matters of governance speaks volumes about his delusions of grandeur.

As a wake-up call, Ndi Anambra is reminded to beware of Ozigbo’s track record of political opportunism and party-hopping that further diminishes his credibility. His desperate quest for power knows no bounds, as evidenced by his shameless willingness to switch allegiances whenever it suits his agenda.

An individual who lacks the integrity to stand by their principles cannot be taken seriously as a critic of governance or even a potential governor. Such a charlatan as Ozigbo is a disaster waiting to happen.

In all, Ozigbo’s “Wake Up Series” video is nothing more than a desperate ploy for relevance and attention. His baseless accusations and misleading rhetoric serve only to undermine the progress and achievements of Governor Soludo’s administration.

As the people of Anambra State, we must see through Ozigbo’s thinly veiled attempts to pull wool over our eyes, and instead, rally behind Governor Soludo’s vision and ongoing transformative actions for a brighter future.

By the way, Ozigbo would do well to focus on himself and put forward his own ideas for the development of Anambra State, if indeed he has any. Instead of sitting in front of a camera with magisterial hubris, engaging in vacuous propaganda and diversionary tactics, he should channel his energy towards his campaign and let Ndi Anambra be the judge of who is a true leader and a shameless pretender.
