…… As LASTMA reiterates the imperative of cyclist safety.

A tragic accident involving a cyclist and a heavily loaded truck (with registration number  BDG 610 YA) took place on Sunday 27, April 2025 at Alausa Bus Stop, approaching ‘Radio’ by Kudirat Abiola Way, along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja.

In a statement released by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA,Adebayo Taofiq noted that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)  swiftly responded to a tragic accident.

According to him,preliminary investigations indicate that the cyclist, while attempting a maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ along Obafemi Awolowo Way and collided with the moving truck

In the process, he tragically lost control, struck his head violently against the pavement, and succumbed to fatal injuries instantaneously.

Eye witness account suggest that the cyclist was engaged in a phone conversation using an earpiece at the time of the incident, resulting in a fatal lapse in concentration on the busy expressway.

Investigator news reports LASTMA operatives promptly arrived at the scene, efficiently securing the area to safeguard other road users and to maintain seamless traffic flow as officers from Alausa Police Division were immediately notified and responded accordingly.

While managing vehicular movement around the accident site, LASTMA officials subsequently transferred custody of the deceased’s remains to the Police, who conveyed the body to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.

Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, underscored the critical importance of unwavering adherence to road safety protocols.

He particularly admonished cyclists to ensure they are appropriately outfitted with all requisite protective gear and to eschew all forms of distractions, including contesting the right of way with motorized traffic.

A Tragic accident involving a fully-laden truck with registration number: GGE 624 YJ, fell off the Pen Cinema bridge in Lagos State on Saturday 26, April 2025,leaving the driver severely injured.

In a release signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the accident occurred earlier in the day along Agege, Old Abeokuta Road, around the bridge.

According to him, preliminary inquiries suggested that the truck driver, who suffered grievous fractures to both hands, lost control of the vehicle while navigating the bridge.

Consequently, the truck plunged from the bridge, landing upon the two commercial buses stationed beneath.

Investigator news reports that LASTMA Officers, responded to the incident, extricated the severely injured driver and immediately entrusted him to officers of the Elere Police Division. He was subsequently conveyed to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical intervention.

“In a bid to safeguard other road users and forestall secondary incidents, LASTMA personnel swiftly secured the accident site by cordoning off the area and diverting vehicular traffic. Thereafter, operatives of the LASEMA Response Unit expeditiously cleared the wreckage, thereby restoring unimpeded traffic flow along the axis,” he said.

Expressing profound concern, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, admonished all motorists, particularly truck operators, to exhibit heightened vigilance and circumspection, especially with the onset of the rainy season.

He went further to underscore the imperative of strict compliance with extant road safety protocols, and enjoined drivers to adhere to the newly installed speed-limiting devices, a measure strategically deployed to mitigate accidents and promote collective road safety.

Three heavy duty trucks were involved in head on collision at the flour Mills corridor inward airways,Apapa, Lagos,thereby causing a grievous traffic flow within the axis.

Investigator news reports that operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)swiftly deployed to the scene undertook immediate traffic management and safety control measures before formally transferring custody of the vehicles to the Traffic Division of Area ‘B’ Command, Nigeria Police Force, Apapa, for further investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that the accident was precipitated by an empty flatbed truck which, in flagrant violation of traffic laws, drove against authorised flow (one-way) and collided head-on with other two oncoming container-laden Mark trucks.

According to the Director Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq stated that no fatalities were recorded, though the crash caused considerable disruption to traffic flow within the axis, noting that the trucks were discovered to be devoid of visible registration plates an egregious breach of traffic and vehicle identification regulations.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, while condemning the lawless and hazardous behaviour exhibited by some truck drivers, issued a stern warning to all motorists especially operators of articulated vehicles to abstain from driving against designated traffic flow, an act punishable under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

Mr. Bakare-Oki reiterated that any vehicle apprehended for contravening this law would not only be impounded but would also be subjected to full prosecutorial processes in line with existing legal provisions.

A Toyota camry vehicle with registration number KJA 126 BH,fell off the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Monday, causing panic among commuters and passersby.

According to reports the female motorist, while travelling at an excessive speed, abruptly applied her brakes upon perceiving another vehicle maneuvering into the service lane ahead of her which tragically veered off the upper deck of the bridge and descended to the lower level.

In a release by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA,Adebayo Taofiq stated that LASTMA personnel, in prompt coordination with allied emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), arrived at the scene expeditiously and the victim was successfully extricated from the wreckage and conveyed without delay to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre located at the Toll Gate for immediate medical intervention.

In his official reaction, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, underscored the paramount importance of adhering to stipulated speed limits and respecting highway regulations.

He lamented that a significant proportion of road traffic accidents in stem from reckless driving, particularly the habitual disregard for established safety protocols by both private and commercial motorists.

“This unfortunate occurrence could have been entirely circumvented had the driver complied with the statutory speed regulations.

“We therefore implore all road users to exercise greater caution and to uphold the tenets of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, in the collective interest of public safety,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated emphatically.”

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of one person and two others injured in an accident that occured along Cele Expressway, inward Oshodi, Lagos.

In a release signed by the Director Public Affairs and Enlightenment department (LASTMA),the General Manager Mr Olalekan Bakare Oki said that the accident involved a fully-laden 40-foot containerized articulated truck,five commercial buses, and two privately-owned automobiles (Camry and Sienna bus).

He stated that the unfortunate incident culminated in the untimely demise of an unsuspecting pedestrian and inflicted varying degrees of bodily harm on two other individuals.

“Preliminary findings from on-site investigations indicate that the heavy-duty truck, conveying two large containers, suffered a catastrophic brake failure while traveling at an excessive speed.”

“The resulting loss of control led to the dislodgment of the containers, which subsequently collapsed onto 5 commercial buses and a pair of private vehicles, causing significant structural damage and human casualties.”

“One of the commercial bus drivers sustained multiple compound fractures to both his arm and leg, while the remaining injured parties were promptly evacuated by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo medical facility for immediate and comprehensive treatment.”

“Officers of LASTMA responded with commendable alacrity, orchestrating an efficient rescue operation in concert with Lasema Response Unit (LRU), FRSC and sympathetic members of the public.”

“Their intervention ensured the swift extraction of the wounded and the restoration of vehicular flow along the severely impacted expressway.”

“Additionally, security personnel from the Ijesha-Tedo Police Division were deployed to provide tactical support and maintain order throughout the emergency response.”he stated

Mr.Bakare-Oki went further to extend his profound condolences to the bereaved family and conveyed his earnest wishes for the swift recuperation of the injured as he seized the occasion to reiterate the imperative for articulated vehicle operators especially those transporting containerized cargo to subject their trucks to routine mechanical assessments, with particular attention to braking systems.

A multiple-vehicle accident involving a container-laden truck that fell on its side and seven other vehicles occurred at the Cele Bus Stop axis of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

According to a statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority via its X account on Saturday, emergency responders are already on the ground, and efforts are underway to address the situation.

The statement read, “A multiple accident has occurred at Cele on the Apapa-Oshodi Express, involving a container-laden truck that fell on its side and seven (7) other vehicles.

“Emergency responders are on the ground and en route, and casualties are being taken care of while our men are on the ground managing the traffic emanating from this.”

LASTMA also highlighted that the accident has caused significant traffic delays, with the backlog extending to Ijesha and spilling over to other areas.
