Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, on Tuesday 5,October,2024,demanded the compensation of the minors involved in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests held nationwide.

The 30 minors released on Tuesday, were part of the 76 people who were charged with treason and inciting a military coup after they were seen waving Russian flags in demonstrations against economic hardship in August.

It will be recalled that on Monday, President Bola Tinubu directed the Attorney-General of the Federation to ensure the immediate release of the minors detained by the Nigeria Police. Their release comes 76 days after they were arrested by the Nigerian government.

A day after their release, Effiong described their arrest and incarceration of the children as an abomination.

“It is an abomination, these children must be properly compensated,” the lawyer said on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics.

“The President must now make it clear that under his administration, no more attack on peaceful protesters, no more attack on journalists, no more attack on democracy.

“Those who go to court and get orders, those orders must be respected. You must make it clear to the Inspector General of Police that this will no longer be tolerated and charges against all other protesters in the country should be dropped.”he submitted

A four-man Nigerian gang member has been jailed for a total of 13 years after forging more than 2,000 marriage certificates that allowed people to live in the UK illegally.

According to a UK news platform, Evening Standard, Abraham Alade Olarotimi Onifade, 41, Abayomi Aderinsoye Shodipo, 38, Nosimot Mojisola Gbadamosi, 31, and Adekunle Kabir, 54, made fraudulent EU Settlement Scheme applications for Nigerian nationals between March 2019 and May last year, the Home Office said.

The organised crime group provided false Nigerian Customary Marriage Certificates and other fraudulent documentation to support the applications of the nationals to help them remain in the country.

A Home Office investigation both domestically and with its international operations based in Lagos, Nigeria uncovered more than 2,000 false marriage documents.

Onifade and Shodipo were both found guilty of conspiracy to facilitate illegal entry into the UK and conspiracy to provide articles used in fraud following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court, the Home Office said.

Gbadamosi was convicted of obtaining leave to remain by deception and fraud by false representation, while Kabir was found guilty of possession of an identity document with improper intention but was cleared of obtaining leave to remain by deception.

Onifade, from Gravesend, was sentenced to six years imprisonment and Shodipo, from Manchester, was jailed for five years at the same court on Tuesday.

Gbadamosi, from Bolton, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment while Kabir, from London, was jailed for nine months.

Home Office chief immigration officer Paul Moran said: “This group was absolutely prolific in their desire to abuse our borders and have rightly been brought to justice.

“As with many gangs we encounter, their sole priority was financial gain. I am delighted that my team was able to intercept their operation, and I hope these convictions will serve as a warning to unscrupulous gangs who exploit people’s desperation to remain in the UK.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to secure our borders and clamp down on the gangs who prey on vulnerable people to make money.”

Women Affairs Minister Disrupt Event,Orders Arrest Of Organisers For Alleged lmpersonation.

    Emmanuel Clement

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has disrupted an event tagged, “Unveiling the Power of Women and Food Security,” which was held without the ministry’s approval and arrest the organisers of the event

Kennedy-Ohanenye on Thursday on her X handle in Abuja stated that the organiser has been taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS) for alleged impersonation of the ministry.

“There is an impersonating thing going on here. The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs did not plan this. The lady, I have arrested her. Right now, she is with the Department of State Service (DSS),” the minister said in a video posted on her X page about the event being organised by Mela-Chiyoma Pat Limited.

“After we wrote that we were cancelling, the president approved that we should cancel until further notice; she still went ahead to print this thing.

“This is impersonation. As far as this thing was given out there, that makes it a fraud. So, that is why I am standing here to explain this to everyone. She has been arrested.

“She should have organised herself, used her name to make an invitation, and used her name to do this and not to use the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

“I can’t allow this programme to move on. I am sorry about it because this is pure impersonation, and the president is not happy about it.

“I am saying this. Let the media cover it; I don’t care. You don’t do this. You don’t take the ministry for granted.”she submitted.

Imo:Women Affairs Commissioner Urges Authorities To lnvoke VAPP, As Law Wins Against Randy Pastor

    Onyebuchi Onwuchekwa, Owerri

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu UNJP has called on authorities to begin to invoke the relevant portions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law to begin to curtail prevalence of emotional, domestic, psychological and physical violence in both private and public spaces in the state.

Recall that a few days ago, the High Court sitting at Owerri convicted one Pastor Desmond Eke, after he was found guilty of raping his 25-year-old church member, whom he was delivering from the forces of darkness.

In Suit No How/32C/2022; State vs. Pastor Desmond Eke, Hon. Justice T.N. Nzeukwu convicted the accused after the victim and the prosecutors had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt.

This case resonates as the first success story of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of Imo State, 2021, as this goes down in history as the first recorded successful conviction under this law. Ugwu expressed happiness that the coming of the VAPP Law has unbundled the burden of delayed justice, which is often experienced in regular courts.

Commissioner Ugwu applauded the Imo First Lady, Barr Mrs Chioma Uzodinma, CSOs, Imo House of Assembly members and the Ministry staff, for their supportive role in ensuring the passage and subsequent assent by the Governor in 2021. She called on all and sundry to begin to popularize the implementation of the VAPP Law
