    In view of the planned nationwide protest scheduled to be held from 1st August to 10th August 2024, the Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Olufemi Abaniwonda has called on organizers of the protest in Delta State to submit the following details of their activities as regards the protest.

    This he said is in compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM that all organizers of the protest give details of their activities to their respective Police Commands for security arrangements before the commencement date.

    CP Olufemi stated that the required details are the proposed protest/assembling point and routes,expected duration of the protest,names and contact details of protest leaders and organizers and measures to prevent hijack by criminal elements.

    CP Olufemi Abaniwonda went further to urge both the organizers and those embarking on the protest to cooperate with the command to ensure that the proposed protest is carried out peacefully without being hijacked by unscrupulous persons

    While assuring the residents in the state that the command will deploy all available resources to ensure that residents are protected during and after the protest and will continue to maintain law and order throughout the state.

    He said,”Those participating in any form of protest are therefore advised to ensure that they maintain the sanctity of public gathering and lawful assembly and avoid acts capable of leading to a breakdown of law and order in the state.”

    “To this end, l have ordered massive deployment across the state to forestall any breakdown of law and order. Undercover Police operatives from the State Intelligence Department have also been deployed to monitor activities during the protest and also identify miscreants who want to cause mayhem during the protest.”he submitted

    The Minister of Education Tahir Mamman has advised students in Nigerian universities to remain on campus during the planned nationwide protests.

    A statement by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday said the advice was to avoid risking their lives.

    The statement was signed by the acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, and addressed to Vice-Chancellors of universities.

    “The Honourable Minister of Education has directed that the attention of Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities be formally drawn to the plan by unknown groups to embark on nationwide protests. The Federal Government is not unaware of the right of any Nigerian to peaceful protest, but is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property should there be any protest action.

    “Consequently, the Honourable Minister has directed that Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities should take proactive steps to ensure the security and safety of the university community, including staff and students. In addition, Vice-Chancellors are to please issue specific statements to assure staff and students of their safety. It is also advisable that students remain on campus to focus on their academic pursuits to avoid exposure to any potential danger during the planned protests.

    “Please accept the renewed assurances of my highest considerations and best wishes.”

    The development comes on the heels of organised a nationwide protest slated for August 1 to 10, 2024.

    The planned protest has gained traction on social media, trending under the hashtag ‘#EndBadGovernance.

    The presidency and police authorities have since called on youths to shelve the protest.

    Power Rotation Bill Experiences Senate Setback

    A bill that sought to establish a rotating president among the six geopolitical zones was unsuccessful in the Senate.

    Many senators who participated in the discussion on the bill’s broad principles during Tuesday’s plenary roundly opposed the bill, which was sponsored by Senator Patrick Abba Moro (PDP, Benue).

    Senator Moro had, in his lead debate, said there was need for a law to legalise rotation of power across the various geographical divides in the country.

    However, senators kicked against the bill on the grounds that it was contrary to constitutional provisions.

    Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah (APC, Kebbi) said the bill should have been presented as one seeking to amend the constitution.

     The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege (APC, Delta), also kicked against the bill.

    Senator Abba Moro, thereafter, withdrew the bill through Order 42 of the Senate standing rules.

    Benue Govt to Buhari: Pay attention to humanitarian crisis in Benue

    The government of Benue State has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to pay attention to the state’s humanitarian crisis, as he has done in the North East, in order to end the sufferings and further loss of life in the state.

    Dr. Emmanuel Shior, Executive Secretary of Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, made the appeal yesterday while flagging off the monthly distribution of food and essential items to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in the state, urging the President to use the remaining months of his administration to help those in need in the state.

    Shior, who lamented the overwhelming burden the state government was shouldering by catering for the needs of the IDPs, said: “it is unthinkable to have IDPs in camp for over five years, and you are left with the responsibility of catering for them.”

    While lamenting that the Federal Government had abdicated its responsibilities to distressed Nigerians, the Executive Secretary blamed the federal government for the inability of the displaced persons to return to their ancestral homes.
    “We urged the President to please pay equal attention to the humanitarian crisis in Benue as being done in the North East. The situation in Benue is dire and it is our earnest desire to have Presidebt Buhari come in to assist us becaue the burden is overwhelming for the state.

    “This will help him write his name in gold. He is a father and we will not be tired of crying to him until he gives us listening ears because he has abandoned the IDPs in Benue. We hope that our continued cry to him will eventually get his attention to come and do something here before he leaves office especially as we are entering the election period.”

    Dr. Shior, who raised concern over the increasing number of displaced persons in the state disclosed that 600 households were recently sacked from their ancestral homes in Logo and Gwer West LGAs by armed herders in fresh attacks stressing that the state was planning an expansion of the IDPs camps to solve the problem of infrastructural deficits with the figure of the IDPs rising to over two million.

    He said: “Because of the huge population of IDPs, it is not easy for the state government to cater for the IDPs alone. We have shared the concern that the Federal Government has neglected the humanitarian crisis in Benue which also has another leg which is crisis of infrastructure.

    “The attackers have not only attacked the farming communities and killed and maimed and displaced people, they have destroyed farmlands, homes, schools, bridges, churches and others.”

    Lagos Rain: Nine Persons Rescued from Sinking Building

    Nine persons have been rescued from a sinking building in the Maryland area of Lagos on Monday, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.

    The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the agency Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the development in a statement to Channels Television.

    He said, “NEMA received a distressed alert on a sinking storey building where nine people are said to be trapped. The building is located at 47 Akinwunmi street, Akinwunmi North, Estate Mende, Maryland, Ikeja.”

    “All nine trapped ladies have been successfully rescued,” he added.

    Other agencies who were on the ground include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA); the State Fire Service, and Police Disaster Management Unit.

    Meanwhile, two  men, were swept away at two locations in Iyana Ipaja and Command areas of Lagos State following the heavy downpour.

    One of the victims, simply known as Alfa was swept in the heavy flooding that took over communities including Ajayi Street, Olubodun Ifesowapo, Olubodun, Fafunwa, Ipaja West and TiOluwani in Alimosho LGA.

    Alfa was said to have initially escaped with his wife and four children but returned to his residence to pick up some items when the flood overwhelmed him.

    While the two men with Alfa made it out with the help of the community members, his family has been evacuated to the residence of a relative.

    Another man was said to have gone missing after he slipped on the Command bridge and fell into the running water. He was, however, carried away before help could reach him. NEMA confirmed the tragic incident.
