    Governor Soludo To Graduates:Face Reality With Resilience.

    At the 13th Convocation of Veritas University in Abuja recently, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, offered a persuasive perspective on the unique generational challenges faced by today’s graduates.

    Recognising that state governors are often the target of public jest, Governor Soludo wondered what meaningful advice he, as a governor from a different era, could provide to the graduating class.

    In a way, the renowned professor of Economics described his own generation, the 1960s and 1970s, as a “limited edition” group, caught between caring for both parents and children. Humorously, he mused on the idea of reversing roles, asking if the graduates might take the lead in the dialogue while he listened.

    Reflecting on his own graduation 40 years past, Governor Soludo drew striking parallels between then and now. Graduating in 1984, he recalled the sense of hope and despair felt as he and his peers faced severe economic challenges, including rationed essential commodities, a lack of steady electricity, and limited telecommunications The Structural Adjustment Program (SAP), ASUU strikes, and rising poverty and unemployment defined the era, with many fearing that the nation was on the brink of collapse. “Which Way Nigeria?”, Sonny Okosun’s song encapsulating the nation’s struggles became the soundtrack of their uncertainty.

    Fast-forward to today, Governor Soludo noted, and the class of 2024 faces similarly daunting circumstances. He cited Nigeria’s decision to end longstanding subsidies on fuel, electricity, and foreign exchange, a move that has temporarily brought immediate inflationary shocks and economic strain. Worsening the picture are widespread floods that displaced millions and rampant criminality, creating a “new economy” of banditry and kidnappings. With a public sector driven more by transactional motives than transformation, Governor Soludo described an environment where virtues seem undervalued.

    In sum, Governor Soludo’s message was very obvious: today’s graduates face an increasingly complex and challenging world. While technology and globalisation offer unprecedented opportunities, Nigeria’s social, political, and economic landscape demands resilience, integrity, and a commitment to positive change. In calling the graduates to rise above these challenges, Governor Soludo invited the new generation to lead with purpose, pursuing both personal success and the improvement of Nigeria.

     The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on Friday celebrated with children from various schools in the State as part of activities to mark his 52nd birthday which comes up on November 11.

     

     

    Dr. Obasa, who gifted brilliant pupils from across the 20 local government areas of Lagos and students in the six districts of the state with cash rewards, urged the children to abstain from social vices as such could redirect their purposes in life.

    At the event which was held at the Oyewole Primary School, Agege, the Speaker said he loves celebrating his birthday with school children as a way to motivate them and make them serious with their studies.

    “We want you to develop that confidence, that dream that you will become something tomorrow. This was my school. As a child, I never thought that I would be where I am today.

    “Therefore, you must be hardworking. It does not matter the name of your school, what matters is your ability and how much you can put into your study. So start reading now.

     

    “I was in class three when I finished preparing the processes for WAEC exams. I can display my result and how I passed at one sitting. You don’t have to feel oppressed because you’re not in a private school. That’s why we are always here to encourage you and make you see that you’re truly our future

    “You can be better than us but you must make sure you are serious with your  education. I want a situation where in the future, you would remember today and also find yourself in positions to inspire others.

    “Please, I beg you. Never give in to crime. For the girls, do not be corrupted or influenced negatively. Don’t be enticed with money. Be upright and adopt morality,” the Speaker advised.

    Investigator news reports that an award of N5 million went to Aminat Alege, the student who was mistakenly hit in the eye by a teargas canister shot by a policeman on February 9, 2024.

    The money was contributed by the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly as part of efforts to help the victim’s family mitigate the  educational challenge she may have faced since the incident.

    Speaking on behalf of his colleagues during the presentation of a cheque to Aminat’s parents, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, (Eti-Osa II), said Speaker Obasa had been disturbed since the incident happened to the student of the Adams Yakubu Memorial school Agege.

    He said the lawmakers decided to assist after watching Aminat’s parents appeal for assistance from the public.

    “There was a programme where the parents cried out for assistance. So we at the Lagos State House of Assembly have contributed the sum of N5 million. We have also offered a scholarship for the young lady so that she can continue her education,” he said.

    The lawmakers further donated 15 computer sets to three schools, Oyewole Primary School, Thomas Aquinas school and Royal Apple School.

    For winning in a current affairs question-and-answer session, two students at the event won scholarships by the chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, Babatunde Johnson.

    Ishola Moyinoluwa of Ikeja Junior High School and Isiaka Bashar Ayomiposi of Eko Junior College were among the students who participated in the competition.

    While Moyinoluwa came first, Ayomiposi came second during the competition.

    Commending Obasa, Mr. Johnson, noted God’s mercies on the Speaker who he described as “a leader that has paid his dues.”

    The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, said Obasa had become a pride to the people of Agege because of the massive infrastructural development the Speaker has attracted to the area.

    Speaking for the educational sector, Tutor-General Adekanye Oladele, commended the Speaker for always uplifting education in the state.

    Shek promised that the students would continue to make the state proud.

    The federal government has abolished the 18-year admission benchmark into tertiary institutions in the country.

    It will be recalled that the former Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman had imposed an 18-year benchmark to candidates seeking admission to tertiary institutions.

    Speaking during his inaugural ministerial press conference which is ongoing in Abuja, the new Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa reversed the directive, whilst hinting on the possibility of his administration to review the nation’s education policy.

    The minister further stressed that  there be no reversal on the federal government’s decision to void over 22,700 degree certificates obtained by Nigerians in some “fake” universities in neighbouring Togo and Benin Republic.

    Ogun State Government Shut Down School Over Death Of SS 2 Student.

    The Ogun State Government has shut down Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-Emi over the death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student of the school.

    This followed the arrest and suspension of the teacher allegedly responsible for the death of the student last Friday, as a result of corporal punishment.

    Investigator news reports that the Principal of the school, Tamrat Onaolapo, who was earlier issued a query for allowing corporal punishment to be used on the pupil against the established rules and regulations in the state has also been suspended.

    The closure of the school was based on the directive of Governor Dapo Abiodun, who has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.

    The governor has promised that those liable by the outcome of the investigation will be made to face the full wrath of the law as representatives of the state government have also visited the family of the late student.

    The visit was to offer condolences to the family and express the Ministry’s sorrow over their loss as well as collect first-hand accounts of the incident for a thorough investigation.

    The team comprised the Director, Secondary and Higher Education Department in the Ministry, the Principals General, Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer, Imeko Afon, representatives of ANCOPPS, Ogun State President, Trade Union Congress and the Ogun State Chairman of ASSUS.

    The Principals General, Egba and Yewa Divisions as well as the Director of Education, Secondary and Higher Education, who spoke during the visit, expressed their heartfelt condolences even as they pledged the support of the state government to the family during this challenging time.

    The officials assured the family that a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the facts surrounding the incident and that accountability would be pursued.

    A condolence letter to commiserate with the bereaved family over the loss as well as a cash gift of N500,000 were handed over to the representative of the deceased family.

    The Press Society (TPS), in collaboration with CAVSI, is organizing a one-day interactive forum aimed at empowering parents, caregivers, and community and religious leaders with tools to understand and address children’s substance use and its effects.

    This forum, themed *”Parental Responsibility in Understanding Children’s Substance Use, Abuse, and Effects,”* will provide participants with insights into the critical role parents play in reducing substance misuse among youths.

    With increasing concerns over substance abuse, organizers are focusing on the need for parents to adopt a more intentional and proactive approach to child-rearing. “Parents need to be equipped with the knowledge to better understand and support their children, as this can be instrumental in curbing substance misuse in our communities,” a representative from the Press Society noted.

    The forum will also feature an outreach component, offering basic foodstuffs at discounted prices to ease the burden of the current economic crisis. “This initiative is part of our commitment to support families not just with information but also with practical assistance,” the representative added.

    Following this event, plans are underway to expand the program to additional communities, creating broader access to education on substance abuse prevention and support for families.

    The Mayor of Isolo, Olasoju Adebayo has further demonstrated his administration’s inspiring resolve to help students of the council area realize their educational ambitions with the distribution of free G.C.E. Forms to school-leavers on Wednesday 23,

    Investigator news reports that this latest undertaking, coming on the heels of the one-in-town back-to-school programme organized on resumption of the current academic year for public Primary schools across the council area, commenced a fortnight ago when beneficiaries were mobilized to the council secretariat for online registration and capturing among others.

    At the climax presentation of photo cards held at the council’s multi-purpose hall, the council boss, Olasoju Adebayo who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Musbau Quadri, charged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity promising to extend further assistance to the outstanding ones when results are released.

    He also encouraged them to imbibe the spirit of giving from their young age saying a better world is achievable once we make giving to the needy a way of life.

    Joining the council boss on the high-table were the Supervisor for Education, Hon. Adeolu Ikugbayigbe, CDC Chairman, Hon. Adesegun Olatunde, Protocol Officer, Alhaja Ganiyat Badmus and the HOD Education, Mr. Omojole Olabode all of whom’s earlier address to the beneficiaries centered around sound preparation, self-esteem and propagation of the council boss’ good works.

    On Saturday 20, October 2024, the Providence Hotel situated at 12A Oba Akinjobi Way,GRA lkeja Lagos played host to a gathering of Lagos State University Alumni Association, Lagos State Branch.

    The event which was tagged “Honors Her Own at 40/Awards Night”, was put together in commemoration of its 40th founders day anniversary, honoured alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally and made significant contributions to nation building.

    The honourees included the Senators representing Lagos West and Lagos East Senatorial Zone,Distinguished Senator Dr ldiat Oluranti Adebule and Senator Mukhali Adetokunbo Abiru who were awarded for Excellence in public service based on their outstanding service and positive impact in the constituency, supporting LASU’s values.

     

    The Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly Rt Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was awarded with Legislative leadership award for exemplary service as Speaker of the House of Assembly and his contributions to the advancement of LASU and the alumni community, while HRH Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi,Kunsenla lll was giving Royal leadership award for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the growth and development of LASU, leaving a lasting legacy.

    She went further to state that since its founding,LASU has been a cradle of Excellence, nurturing countless individuals who have gone on to lead,innovate and inspire change across various fields.

    “Our founders whose vision set the foundation for this great institution, imagined a future where LASU would be a pillar of academic distinction, shaping leaders not just for Nigeria but for the world. Today we honor their foresight and dedication by continuing to build upon their dream.

    The Vice Chancellor of of the University,Prof lbiyemi lbilola Olatunji Bello who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics),Prof. Abayomi says that the University has recorded so many feats and achievements including the just University All African Games hosted by LASU and Unilag, where the University came second.

    He lauded the alumni association and thanking them for adding values to the institution. While reiterating her administration’s resolve to continue to work for the advancement of the institution,appealing to the association to continue to identify with the University in its quest at achieving its goals and aspirations.

    The Vice Chancellor went ahead to state that the institution had excelled in national and global competitions,He averred that students of the institution now compete nationally and globally as they have students who can hold their own anywhere .

    The Keynote Speaker Mr Luqman Olubokola Amolegbe in his address commended the founding fathers of the institution for having the vision to establish the university. He also lauded members of the alumni association, staff and students for contributions made towards the progress of the institution.

    Mr Luqman emphasize on the need for the alumni to make the students and institution feel their impact and contributions towards the growth of the university.

    “I want each and everyone one of us sitting here today to contribute their quota to the institution that have made you what you are today without waiting for the association. I also want to implore the National Alumni Association to start holding luncheon so that the institution and the students can feel our impact because when next we will be celebrating 50years anniversary, many of us would have retired from active service including myself,so make hay while the sunshine by giving back to your alma mater”he stated

    He equally charged institution’s alumni associations, to come to the aid of their Alma mater through rendering of services, and provision of moral support to their leadership, stating that the step would help in alleviating some of the challenges facing the departments and faculty..

    Mr Luqman Amolegbe who is one of the awardee says he feels proud for the award giving to him as the most outstanding student leader, for his exceptional leadership and positive impact on the LASU student community, stating that he is equally happy that that those he led decided to recognize his impact.

Youthful exuberance is becoming the order of the day, the youths l should know that whatever they do today would have an effect of what they become in future.     She equally charged the institution’s alumni associations, to come to the aid of their alma mater, through rendering of services, and provision of moral support to their leadership, stating that the step would help in alleviating some of the challenges facing the institutions, while pledging her total support to the actualization of the proposed alumni postgraduate halls of residence.

     Speaking to newsmen,the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media,Mr Enitan Olukotun rejoices with the alumni especially Lagos branch for sustaining the great institution for over four decades.

     The Senate Committee Chairman on Banking & Finance who is known for his impeccable pedigree and his antecedents in the Corporate and thereafter rose to his present career thanked the association for the award giving to him as it will spur him to make more impact in the society and the institution at large.

     The Chairman LASU Alumni Lagos branch, Barrister Satar Oladipupo Omolola stated that the essence of the celebration was to recognize those alumni who have touched lives, impacted into the society and given back to the institutions.

     He highlighted some of the achievements recorded by the alumni association such as providing indigent trust fund which is meant to assist the indigent students, proposed alumni postgraduate halls of residence among others.

     Bar. Satar noted that the founders have done their part and they are the success stories projecting the positive LASU image and spirits and giving back to the institutions.

     Investigator news reports that Lagos State University whose old and new students fondly addressed themselves as Lasuites was established in 1983 by the Lagos State Government under the Lagos state university law of 1983 which was enacted the Lagos State House of Assembly.

    The university was created to provide quality tertiary education for Lagos State indigenes and other Nigerians,the university was founded by the then Governor of Lagos State,Alhaji Lateef Jakande on October 22,1983.

     It will be recalled that the university expanded its infrastructure with new campus projects, including building lecture halls, libraries and students hostels as the university boast of large number of distinguished alumni who have excelled in various fields.

    It continues to focus on expanding its academic programs, improving infrastructure and fostering an inclusive academic environment.

    The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu ‘Dullar’, joined the celebration as two newly constructed blocks of 22 classrooms were commissioned at Wright Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Somolu, earlier yesterday.

    Investigator news reports that the project was facilitated by Distinguished Senator Adetokunbo Abiru and commissioned by Her Excellency, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Chairman ‘Dullar’ expressed his appreciation to Senator Abiru for his continuous commitment to educational advancement across Lagos East.

    He highlighted that this facility would serve as a cornerstone for improving education in Somolu, providing children with a conducive learning environment to help them reach their full potential.

    In his address, Senator Abiru reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing the educational landscape. He emphasized that investments in education were pivotal to securing the future of Nigeria. Her Excellency, Orelope-Adefulire, echoed similar sentiments, noting that projects like this contribute significantly to the realization of SDG Goal 4: ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

    Chairman ‘Dullar’ also outlined his administration’s ongoing educational initiatives, including the renovation of Agunbiade Primary School and ongoing upgrading of Wesley Primary School. He further committed to providing modern facilities in the health and economic sectors, with projects set to uplift the Somolu community.

    The event was attended by dignitaries, including Senator Anthony Adefuye, Hon. Rotimi Abiru, Somolu Federal Lawmaker and Hon. Dare Martins, demonstrating the strong collaboration for development in Somolu local government.

    NECO Warns Against Registration Of Candidates By Proxy

    The National Examination Council (NECO)has warned school owners and other relevant stakeholders to desist from enrolling candidates for its examination by proxy.

    The Council stated this in a press release signed by Ag Director lnformation and Public Relation,Mr Azeez Sani stating the council is determined to eradicate all forms of examination malpractice as the council has put in place measures to check impersonation in all examination.

    He went further to state that such fraudulent practice often results in identity theft and subsequent parade of fake results.

    He said,”Some measures put in place include the use of biometric data capturing device,use of customized answers booklet and embossing of photograph and data of birth of candidates on the original certificate”

    “Also the Neco e-verify,an online platforms for confirmation/verification of NECO results was unveiled last year “he stated.

    Mr Sani enjoined all the members of the public to note that any certificate purported to have been issued by the council and which cannot be verified or authenticated using the NECO e-verify platform is fake.

    The release went further to call on the State Ministry of Education and other school owners to ensure that details of genuine candidates are used for registering in all NECO examinations.

    The Wife of the Executive Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Mrs Omofadekemi Oloyede has advocated for proper education and care of the girl child.

    Mrs Oloyede spoke during this year’s girl child day celebration held at the marriage registry of the local government on Friday where she urged the girls to take their education serious as it is the only thing that can liberate them in their life sojourn.

    The wife of the council chairman stated that the girl child is the bedrock of a viable society, because it is the girl child that grows to become a wife and mother that trains the child.

    She emphasised the need for parents to take care of the girl child and give them proper sex education saying parents tutoring their girls on sex education makes it better understood and well explained than letting them get such outside through friends which she said may be dangerous as negative things might be learnt.

    She said: “Let me congratulate you for this year’s edition of the girl child day. This day is set aside to celebrate the uniqueness in the girl child.

    We are celebrating you today because you are the future, I will urge you to take your studies very seriously and ensure proper care of your body. You are a unique creature and you must see yourself in that light, don’t let anyone decieve you, be focused in your studies.

    “If you are experiencing anything in your body, tell your parents, don’t let any boy or man touch you, your body is not for sell, protect yourself against this. Open up, don’t die in silence, we are there to support you in all ways to achieve your goals in life.”

    “Let me appeal to our parents to take seriously the education of their children especially the girl child, these are our future and we must protect them against any form of atrocities.”she submitted
