  • Alvan lkoku Gets New Acting Vice Chancellor.

    The Governing Council of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, has appointed Prof. Stella Ngozi Lemchi as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

    The Council made the appointment at their inaugural meeting in the institution on Thursday, 25th July, 2024 following her recommendation by the University Senate. The appointment is with immediate effect.

    In a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council, Sen. Dr. Joy Emodi, CON and dated July 25, 2024, the Council congratulated Prof. Lemchi on her appointment. This development comes as the University continues to build on its recent upgrade from a College of Education to a University.

    Under the leadership of Sen. Dr. Joy Emodi, CON, the pioneer Governing Council has emphasised the importance of cooperation between the Council, University and host communities. During the Council’s meetings with various stakeholders, Sen. Dr. Emodi urged for a tripartite relationship, stating that success would come through collective effort.

    Prof. Stella Lemchi is a Professor of Home Economics Education and a former Provost of the erstwhile College of Education. Before her appointment, Prof Lemchi had been overseeing the institution’s affairs since its upgrade last year as the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration).

    The Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, today, Friday, 19th July, 2024, received the new Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic Oko.

    The Council members led by its Chairman, Senator Barnabas Gemade were received at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.

    Senator Gemade who was the former National Chairman of People’s Democratic Party, described Governor Soludo as the most famous former Central Bank Governor in the history of the nation. He explained that their visit was to officially inform him that they had assumed duty in the institution as members of the governing councils members

    “As Governor of the CBN, you brought tremendous innovation and we have seen that in your style of governance.

    “Part of our work in the institution is to ensure that we collaborate with your government.

    “This council will ensure that the institution is close to your government in programmes of technological development. I am delighted to be here with my members”; he concluded.

    Responding, Governor Soludo congratulated them on their well-deserved appointment, illustrating his emotional attachment to the institution.

     

    “I knew it when it was Oko arts of science. It later changed to Anambra State and finally, Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

    “It has grown in number and size, but you have a humongous task ahead of you.

    “I look at the institution with mixed feelings of hope and opportunities but also of despair.

    “We know where the dream was, but whether we are heading to the position, I don’t know.

    “This is not peculiar to Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Most of our institutions are turning into glorified secondary school.

    “We need to start asking the pivotal question of what our various individual institutions are known for. What comes to mind when our institutions are mentioned?

    “Sadly, many of our institutions have gone down. We need to go back to the fundamental ideas of our forefathers.

    “I’m still looking at the glass as half full,” the governor stated.

    He revealed that the new composition of the Council is an opportunity for something unique to be done in the institution, rather than being a place where people are given paper certificates without something to do when they graduate.

    “In our own Polytechnic here in Mgbakwu, I have a team reviewing their status. They will soon submit their report on whether the institution is fit for purpose.

    “It is a general problem of our education, particularly tertiary education.

    “I call them the “villagization” of our institutions, but I see Nigeria in terms of composition of members of the board.

    “There is huge work to be done, to be able to rescue our education sector.

    “I’ve seen university when it was universal, not minding where one came from but the value being added.

    “Here in Anambra, we recruited 8115 teachers from 18 states of the country because the interest of the Anambra child is to be taught by the best teacher. We are already practising what we preach.

    “Re-invent Federal Polytechnic, Oko. It has been villagized to a glorified high school.

    “I’ve seen how it works elsewhere and it pains me to see what is going on here.

    “We have a job to rebuild because education remains the ladder of opportunities.

    “In terms of strategic partnership with you, there is a whole lot we can do to assist you, though yours is a Federal Institution in Anambra State. Let’s do it together”; Governor Soludo added.

    Those who attended the event include the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, The Acting Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Uche Onyegbu, among others.

    As part of its efforts to provide quality education in the State, the Lagos State Government has set aside Saturday, 20th July, 2024 for the conduct of the Placement Test by Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS) for Primary six pupils in the state.

    This was contained in a statement signed by the Director, Lagos State Examinations Board, Mr. Adebayo Orunsolu, informing the general public, parents and guardians that the test will hold on Saturday, 20th July, 2024 across the six Education Districts of the State.

    He explained that three bodies: the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) and the Lagos State Examinations Board have agreed on the 20th of July, 2024 as the Final Date for the conduct of the Test for Primary Six Pupils transiting to Government Public Junior Secondary Schools (JSS1) in the State for the Year 2024/2025 Academic Session.

    Orunsolu noted that children have the right to quality education, adding that providing them an opportunity to receive quality education is the only way to make them realise their future ambitions.

    He, therefore, enjoined authorities of Public and Approved Private Primary Schools in the State to take note of the date and ensure that parents and guardians of their pupils are duly informed so that all eligible pupils can participate in the exercise.

    He assured stakeholders and parents that no child would be left unattended to, stressing that machinery has been set in motion to ensure the conduct of a seamless, hitch-free and successful exercise.

    Orunsolu also called for the cooperation of parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to make the exercise a huge success.

    Aisha Maikudi Emerges Youngest Acting VC Of UniAbuja

    Professor Aisha Maikudi has been announced as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja. At 41 years, she becomes the youngest ever acting VC of the institution.

    Maikudi succeeds Professor Abdulrasheed Na’allah, the institution’s sixth Vice Chancellor, whose tenure will end on June 30.

    The senate approved her appointment pending the selection of a substantive Vice Chancellor by the university’s governing council.

    In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed gratitude to members of the Senate for the confidence reposed in her.

    She said, “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and the unwavering commitment that you have accorded me.”

    Aisha Maikudi was born on January 31st, 1983 in Zaria, Kaduna State,hails from Katsina State. She attended Queens College, Lagos where she obtained her WASSCE and proceeded to obtained her LLB degree from the University of Reading, UK, her LLM from the London School of Economics, UK, BL from the Nigeria Law School, Abuja, and her Ph.D from the University of Abuja, Nigeria.

    Aisha did her mandatory National Youth Service Corps at the Corporate Secretariat and Legal Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 2007 and in 2008, Aisha became a Lecturer 2 at the University of Abuja.

    She has written extensively on United Nations Law which is her specialization and also has a Postgraduate course on United Nations Law and has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate works.

    Following her pedigree as a certified lawyer,she taught Company Law for over 12 years and is well-versed in its mechanics, participated in numerous conferences and trainings worldwide.

    Aisha Maikudi is a woman of many firsts some of which include; the first female and youngest Head of Department, Faculty of Law in 2014, first female and youngest Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law in 2018.

    The youngest Professor of the University of Abuja and one of the youngest professors in Nigeria and the first female Professor of Law in the North West and the University of Abuja.Until her new role,she was the pioneer Director, University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.

    Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Governor of Anambra State,has approved the appointment of a Lawyer and human right activist,Professor Chidi Odinkalu,the wife of late Odumegwu-Ojukwu,as members of the Governing Council for Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State.

    The members of the new Council include the following:

    Other members are:Chief (Mrs) Ifeoma Ekwueme,Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu,Chief Christopher Ndubuisi,and HRH Oranu Chris Chidume.

    In a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary,Mr Christian Aburime, stated that the new Council, assembled with a focus on excellence, integrity and strategic leadership, will provide guidance and oversight for the continued growth and development of the state-owned university.

    Michael Tansi Memorial secondary school Aguleri, Anambra State has emerged the overall winner of the National Quiz and Debate Championship organized by the United Organization for Education and sports Development Nigeria.

    The school was represented by Agbo Daniel, Iloakasia Alexander, Okeke Jennifer, Okagbue Cyprain, Dilibe Felicitas Chiemerie and others while their coaches are Mbam Abraham and Aunty Felicia, where they defeated other 10 schools that made it to the final stage with 208 points to cart away with the first prize.

    Receiving the champions, the First Lady of Anambra State, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, stated that the Anambra students have showcased their exceptional skills and knowledge, while expressing her pride in the state’s education sector, highlighting the investments and reforms made by Soludo’s administration.

    She said”Excellence is, undoubtedly, made in Anambra State,l want to emphasize the importance of providing every child in Anambra State with a platform to reach their full potential.

    “With the recent victory, Anambra State continues to demonstrate its dedication to excellence in education”. She stated.

    The First Lady concluded her speech with a powerful affirmation, “Anambra is winning. The Solution is Here!, which reflects the state’s commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering a competitive spirit among its students.

    It will be recalled that the first stage of the competition involved all secondary schools in Nigeria where some schools were eliminated at the preliminary stage.

    The second stage of the quiz competition involved 50 schools that scaled through the preliminary stage and questions were from Mathematics, Science General Studies and General Debate.

    At the competition which saw Tansi students clinching the first prize position as they were presented with plagues and the star prize.

    The second and third positions went to Marta Amabis Secondary School Umuoji Anambra State with 199 points and John Ikwensi Memorial Grammar school Emene Enugu state with 195 points.

    Other positions include 4th- Federal science and Technical college Uromi Delta state 194 points,5th position -Arch Bishop Tech College Ogidi Anambra State with 190 points,6th position – St Patrick’s secondary school Awka Anambra State 187 points,7th position -St James Chatan Secondary School Owerri Imo State with 174 points,8th position -Model Comprehensive Secondary School Iyi Oji River Enugu state with 171 points.
    Others are Grace High School Gbagada Lagos state,Jesson Jetha Secondary School Owerri Imo State,Anglican Grammar school Achi Oji River Enugu State,Better Tomorrow international college Ujevwu Ondo State.

    The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) Imo state chapter has called on the government and education stakeholders at the state to make Education a priority by providing the needed funding allocation and release to the sector to have a transformative Education.

    The coalition made the call through her activities to commemorate the Global Action Week on Education 2024, with the theme: Beat the drum for “Transformative Education”. The activities included Advocacy Visits, interactive sessions with Heads of teachers and supervisors, airing of Beat the drum jingles, radio interactive programme, among others.

    At an interactive session with Heads of teachers in Mbaitoli LGA, the Imo State Coordinator of CSACEFA, Elder Kenneth Amogu, reminded the teacher of their professional slogan that says “teachers are great, no controversy “, he charged them to beat the drum for transformative Education by being passionate in delivering healthy and quality teaching, ensuring that learning takes place for a transformed learner. He encouraged them to be diligent in their duties, improve their skills regularly through trainings to ensure that they deliver quality teaching, that will enable learning to take place and learners transformed for a better society.

    “We must through quality teaching reduce the various vices found among our young people, like drug abuse, rape, kidnapping, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, among others. “We must have transformative Education to attain SDG 4 and make our society a better place”, he said.

    In her remark during the interactive session, the Director UNICEF and other NGO desk IMSUBEB, Dr. Mrs Chinwe Adim encouraged the teachers to continue to improve their skills, and take participation in training opportunities provided by government and partners very serious, as that will help and position them well for transformative Education.

    In her contribution, Mrs Juliet Okeiyi, the State Secretary CSACEFA Imo State, encouraged the teachers to always strive to work as professionals, building their capacities in some special areas as ICT, use of Smart School Learning materials, and taking every available opportunity for training serious to enable them to be rightly positioned to deliver transformative Education, as the sector continues to embrace digital training and learning.

    The teachers agreed that they need trainings on modern teaching skills to improve on their capacity to deliver quality teaching.

    At the Global Action Week for Education (GAWE 2024) Radio discussion held at Orient FM owerri, Elder Kenneth Amogu applauded the government and her education stakeholders for the attention the sector is receiving at the state. He requested for more support to the sector, to enable the state achieve transformative Education sector.

    He made case for more funding for Education projects, as well as timely release of the allocations for implementation. He stressed on the need to make Education at the state healthy and transformative, adding that most of the primary schools in the state, do not have perimeter fence, desks and tables for learners and teachers, water and sanitary facilities for use, especially by the girl child during her monthly periods. He said providing this facilities in our schools will make learning and transformation to take place faster.

    In her own contributions, Mrs Juliet Okeiyi also appreciated the Government and her partners for their support to Education, and requested for a special attention on teachers training, as many of them need to be retrained, and have their capacities built to enable them deliver quality teaching.

    The coalition also embarked on Advocacy visit as part of the GAWE 2024 celebrations.

    The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released additional 36,540 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results withheld for further investigation.

    This was in addition to the 531 results released the previous week, bringing the total results released to 1,879,437.

    This is contained in a statement by the Public Communication Advisor of the Board, Dr Fabian Benjamin on Tuesday in Abuja.

    The Board also dismissed a letter by an alleged fraudster the outstanding 2024 UTME results, subjected to scrutiny by experts, had been compromised on account of a cyber security breach for which it is considering rescheduling the examination.

    The statement reads: “In another development, the attention of the Board was drawn to a fictitious letter concocted by a fraudster and circulated on social media purporting to emanate from the Board stating that the outstanding 2024 UTME results, currently being subjected to intense scrutiny by its team of experts, had been compromised on account of a cyber security breach and that it is considering rescheduling the examination.

    “This is far from the truth as the said letter did not emanate from the Board. In fact, a closer look at the letter, which was not signed by any person, lacked every ingredient of a letter from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The letter is, therefore, from those, who wish to destroy the integrity of the Board, by compromising its unassailable operational processes to mislead hapless candidates with the sole aim of extorting them.

    “The Board reiterated, for the umpteenth time, that the results of its 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and other previous years are intact, not in any cloud storage and can, therefore, not be hacked by anybody.

    “It is to be recalled that at the release of the 2024 UTME, the Board had announced that some results had been withheld as they were being subjected to further investigation. Out of these, 531 results were released recently. Others found to be involved in any examination misconduct are still undergoing investigation as the Board would want to review all the footage of all CCTV cameras placed in all its accredited centres to ascertain the candidate’s culpability or otherwise.

    “At the conclusion of this exercise, the Board would publish its findings. Therefore, the public is urged to be wary of misleading information emanating from sources not linked to the Board be it religious or other sources.

    “Equally disturbing is the misleading comments of some functionaries of some private institutions, who are linking the Board with “the prevailing low ‘cut-off marks’when in practice, it was their institutions that had submitted lower minimum minimum admissible scores marks, even lower than what other institutions had presented.

    “For the purpose of clarity, minimum admissible scores are first presented by individual institutions before such are debated to arrive at a benchmark agreed upon by all Heads of Institutions across the country at its annual Policy Meeting on Admissions and which no institution would be allowed to compromise.,the statement reads

    Following the recent appointment of Dr.Justina Chinyere Anyadiegwu as the new Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe,Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, of Anambra State has approved the appointments of the underlisted persons as members of the Governing Council of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.

    According to the release, signed by the Chief Press Secretary,Mr Christian Aburime, Mrs Nneka Onyali-lkpe will serve as the Chairman while Chief Fidelis Nweke,Prof. (Rev Sis) Uju Marie-Esther Dibua,Ven (Dr) Rex C. Kanu,Prof. Celestine Uzoma Agurou will serve as members of the governing council.

    Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has approved the appointment of Dr. Justina Chinyere Anyadiegwu as the new Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.

    Dr. Anyadiegwu succeeds Dr. Ifeyinwa Osegbo and assumes leadership of the esteemed institution, founded 48 years ago.

    Dr. Justina Chinyere Anyadiegwu brings to her new role a wealth of experience garnered over 18 years as a senior lecturer at Nwafor Orizu College of Education.

    Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Anyadiegwu has also contributed significantly to the educational landscape of Nigeria. Her role as a consultant trainer with the British Council Nigeria underscores her proficiency and recognition in the field of education.

    Dr. Anyadiegwu holds a Ph.D. in English/Language Arts/Teacher Education from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, further solidifying her credentials as a distinguished scholar and educator.

    The appointment of Dr. Justina Chinyere Anyadiegwu reflects the Soludo government’s commitment to promoting meritocracy and fostering the continued growth and development of educational institutions in Anambra State.
