The Federal Government has announced a significant policy shift, scrapping Mathematics as a compulsory subject for Arts and Humanities students seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
This decision, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education,through its spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo, explained that the decision was part of the newly revised National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions,aimed to remove unnecessary barriers to higher education while maintaining academic standards.
Investigator news reports that this major policy shift means that Senior Secondary School students pursuing arts-related courses will no longer need to secure a credit pass in Mathematics in their WAEC or NECO examinations before gaining admission into universities or polytechnics.
According to the new guidelines, Mathematics remains a compulsory requirement for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses, while English Language remains mandatory across all disciplines.
For Arts and Humanities students, only relevant subjects to their chosen field will now be required alongside English.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the move as a deliberate effort to expand access to tertiary education and create a more inclusive academic environment.

In an event on Thursday 9, October 2025,organized by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Apprenticeship Management and Administration (IEAMA)highlighted the crucial role of microfinance banks in driving small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) growth in Nigeria.
Experts emphasized the need for stronger linkages between financiers and entrepreneurs to promote innovation, job creation, and sustainable development.
The event, themed “Microfinance Banks as Catalysts for SMME Growth in Nigeria’s Economy,”brought together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and financial institutions to explore new pathways for SME financing and apprenticeship development.
The Acting Provost of Lagos State Cooperative College Lagos State, Dr. Adebosin Gbadebo,who is one the speakers at the event described microfinance banks as the backbone of Nigeria’s informal economy, which accounts for nearly 96% of all businesses and contributes about 40% to the country’s GDP.

He emphasized the need for strengthening capacity building, ensuring affordable credit, and expanding financial literacy to sustain the impact of microfinance on job creation and poverty reduction.

Gbadebo noted that more than 800 licensed microfinance banks currently operate across the country,promotes financial inclusion and enterprise growth despite challenges of capitalisation and regulatory compliance.
The Acting Provost appealed to stakeholders to focus on strengthening capacity building, ensuring affordable credit, and expanding financial literacy to sustain the impact of microfinance on job creation and poverty reduction.
She emphasized that microfinance banks provide financial inclusion, access to credit facilities, and capacity building for entrepreneurs.
Mrs Adeogun went further to note that microfinance banks have been instrumental in promoting financial inclusion, particularly in rural and underserved areas, stating that with over 800 microfinance banks in Nigeria, entrepreneurs can access loans and other financial services to grow their businesses.
The speaker also emphasized the importance of having a good credit score, stating that it enables entrepreneurs to access credit facilities from banks and other financial institutions.
Additionally, Adeogun advised entrepreneurs to be cautious when accessing loans and to ensure they do not default on payments, as this can negatively impact their credit score and ability to access future loans.

To ensure that there’s seamless learning in schools, teachers of Imo State have been urged to employ the model of Gender Responsive Pedagogy as they impact knowledge to the students/pupils put in their custody.
This advice was part of the take home information provided by the Master trainers, to teachers during the two-day Gender Responsive Pedagogy Teachers Training (GRPTT) held at IMSUBEB Complex in Owerri from Thursday, 25 to Friday September 26 2025.
Speaking during the event that was organised by the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) Imo State, in partnership with Imo State Universal Basic Education (IMSUBEB) using the Gender Responsive Pedagogy Training modules developed by Plan International, the state Coordinator of CSACEFA, Elder Kenneth Amogu noted that Gender Responsive Pedagogy means teaching in a way that responds to the needs of boys and girls, as both of them have equal rights to have access to quality education, the Gender Responsive Pedagogy way of teaching must be embraced by the old and new teachers.
He said, “There’s need to be mindful of the words we use in classes. We must refer and see both female and male students/pupils as ones that have capacity to live their full potentials. “We need to start remodeling the minds of the pupils.
Let’s start changing the stereotypes that have widen the gap, Gender Equality is the way to go as we must have our women and men, girls and boys enjoy the same status in the society, enjoy all human rights fully and without discrimination, enjoy the same level of respect in the community, must be equally valued by all, can take advantage of same opportunities to make choices, and have the same amount of power to shape the outcome of these choices”.
He appreciated the CSACEFA National Secretariat and the EOL project 2024-2026 (supported by Oxfam Denmark and GPE), for providing the supports for the activity for Teachers Professional Development”.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of IMSUBEB, Hon. Chidiebere Egbo said there should not be disparity in the class as the teachers teach the learners, stressing that there ought not to be preference for both the boy or girl pupils because they have equal opportunity of developing their potentials to attain any heights.
“Education is not only about reading and writing, Hygiene is involved especially with the girl child. Puberty and menstrual hygiene are also taught to the teachers so that when they see these changes, they will know what to do, and as it concerns the girl and the boy as everyone must support the girl child for an improved menstrual hygiene.
“The training will make the teachers to be awake to their responsibility. We expect that at the end of the training, the teachers will step down the training to about 1277 schools in the state”.
“The girl child should not be made to feel inferior or feel that she cannot live out her potentials without a man. “Education and knowledge are key to transformation. Parents should not be apportioning certain roles to the boys alone nor the girls alone”.
A teacher participant, Onuka Christian Osita said he has learnt to inculcate values as he teaches the students.
“I am not to discriminate against any student as I teach. We need to carry girl child along in education because they have potential to become what their male counterpart can achieve”.
He said it’s important that both sex are made to have self esteem despite their hormonal origin”.
Another teacher, Ohiri Blessing noted that teachers should know how to use sex and gender because they are not the same. What a boy can do, a girl can equally do.
The first line of action when I get back to school is to have stepdown training for the teachers that will in turn extend the learning to other teachers and students. She said the special students must also be supported to get better education.
She said it’s important to understand the learning speed of each student and know how to deal with them, saying there are hyper learners, average and slow learners so that not classifying all categories of students in one will not make one a good teacher as they learned in the training.
The Gender Responsive Teachers Training will support the hosting of Teachers Reflection Circles and meetings in various schools in the state to provide the much needed information and support for Gender Responsive teaching and supporting teachers professionally.
The two day training, had the two Master Trainers from the State, Elder Kenneth Amogu and Juliet Obiageri Okeiyi, as the Resource Persons.
Concerted efforts must be made by all to ensure that all the serving teachers receive the Gender Responsive Pedagogy Teachers Training.
It would be recalled that this is the second batch of teachers trained on Gender Responsive Pedagogy (GRPTT) in Imo state by the EOL Project. The first batch was trained in 2024.

The Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has strongly condemned a viral video allegedly showing students of Excel College in Ejigbo Lagos engaging in acts of immorality, including smoking and drinking alcohol.
In a press release signed by the Executive Chairman and made available to Investigator news,Aare Tahoeed Adebayo Taiwo stated that the council has taken immediate action to investigate the incident, working with relevant stakeholders to ascertain the level of negligence and take disciplinary measures against those found culpable.
The Council boss who frowned at the viral video being circulated,condemned the acts, citing their detrimental impact on the moral upbringing of children, stating that a thorough investigation is underway, involving parents, school authorities, security agencies, and medical personnel.
He noted that those found culpable will face disciplinary action to serve as a deterrent and prevent future incidents.
“The attention of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has been drawn to a video circulating on social media allegedly showing students of our Excel College, Ejigbo engaging in acts of immorality, including smoking, drinking alcohol, and other indecent behaviors.”

The Kogi State Government has continued its distribution of N40,000 Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) grants to schoolgirls under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.
The initiative aims to enhance school enrollment, retention, and transition for adolescent girls, reducing financial and socio-cultural barriers to education.
At the exercise held on Wednesday at GYB Model Science Secondary School (GYBMSSS), Lokoja, the AGILE team issued preloaded ATM cards to parents and guardians of beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, the Kogi State Project Coordinator, Mr. Ahmed Oricha, commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for keeping to his promise of ensuring that ATM cards are distributed across the state to all beneficiaries.
He stressed that the disbursement was not a one-off, but a follow-up activity towards the Governor’s pledge that the AGILE-CCT initiative will be sustained as a continuous intervention under the AGILE project.
Oricha noted that the project would provide a cash grant of N40,000 each to 13,359 adolescent girls in transition classes across the state, with the goal of dismantling financial and socio-cultural barriers preventing girls from attending school.
He urged schoolgirls to maintain regular school attendance, while calling on parents to ensure the funds are used strictly for their children’s education.
The Lead Consultant, Mr. Richard Alabi, reiterated that the account linked to the ATM card is a dedicated wallet for AGILE fund disbursement and must not be diverted for other uses.
He emphasized that beneficiaries must sustain at least 70 per cent school attendance to continue enjoying the scheme, while also cautioning parents against paying any form of processing fees, as the government has fully covered the costs.
The Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Lead, Mr. Kunle Musa, explained that the disbursement is being carried out in batches until all 13,359 beneficiaries receive their funds.
UBA Branch Manager, Ms. Jennifer Efe, lauded the state government’s commitment to prioritizing education through the AGILE-CCT program, noting that Kogi is among the first states to begin actual implementation.
She encouraged parents to use the funds appropriately for their children’s education and advised them to consider opening a separate savings account for future planning.
The Principal of GYBMSSS, Chief Godwin Ajofe Yakubu, commended Governor Ododo for making education a priority and ensuring that girls are not left behind.
He expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their support in making the project successful.
