Timi Dakolo calls out APC for playing his song “Great Nation” without permission during presidential primaries

Timi Dakolo, a Nigerian music star, has chastised the All Progressives Congress, APC, for using one of his songs during their national convention in Abuja on Tuesday without his permission.

Timi Dakolo’s hit song, ‘Great Nation,’ was played at the APC presidential primaries on Tuesday, when members of the Nigerian entertainment industry appeared on stage as Ambassadors of Voice for Change to lend their voices to the country’s call for peace and unity.

The ruling party invited the group, which included veteran actors such as Zack Orji, Gentle Giant, and others, as they joined the call for Nigerian unity.

Dakolo, on the other hand, took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to claim that he was not consulted before his song was used at the event.

The same song was performed during Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s declaration to run for president in 2023.

“Why use an artist’s song in a rally or campaign without permission?” What people get away with in this country known as Nigeria. This is actually the second time,” he tweeted.

The APC presidential primary is still taking place in Abuja’s Eagles Square.

Mr Eazi combines art and music in a new documentary

Ahead of the release of his new single, African music superstar Oluwatosin Ajibade, also known as Mr Eazi, is inviting viewers into his creative process with ‘The Legalize Art Experience,’ a new short film documenting his collaboration with Benin Republic-based painter Patricorel.

The mini-documentary, directed by Demola Falomo, captures Eazi’s first performance of ‘Legalize,’ the first single from his upcoming debut album, as Patricorel creates the single’s artwork onsite for an intimate audience. The footage was shot at an invite-only event in May at a decommissioned hotel in Lagos, Nigeria’s Lekki district.

Mr Eazi sees his yet-untitled debut album as a collection of art pieces, inspired by his growing interest in acquiring and showcasing African art. (Eazi considers his previous full-length projects, Life is Eazi, Vol. 1: From Accra to Lagos and Life is Eazi, Vol. 2: From Lagos to London, to be mixtapes.) Each album single will be represented by a series of specially commissioned pieces by various African visual artists. These works will be tokenized and made available to the public through specially curated metaverse and physical events.

Mr Eazi first met Patricorel while recording for the album in Cotonou, Benin, and hired him for ‘Legalize.’

While the song finds Eazi exposing his emotions as he celebrates his love for fiancee Temi Otedola, Patricorel’s painting of the same name captures the intimacy of love, submission, vulnerability, and death’s finality.

“I see the instrumental as a canvas, just like Patricorel…

“It’s a blank canvas, and you have no idea what you’re going to create,” Eazi explains. “What struck me was the fact that he represents love with his pieces, but he draws with skeletons.” “I believe skeletons are our most human, naked form.”

The song ‘Legalize,’ as well as its official music video, will be released on Friday, June 10.

“It is a marriage of law and entertainment,” he stated when asked what his next step will be. One of the reasons I studied law was to be able to combine the two fields of law and entertainment, and I believe I am on the right track. There will be a television series called “The People’s Lawyer” airing in the next month or two. I’m willing to bet that it will keep Nigerians hooked to their televisions for the next five to fifteen years, just like ‘Professor Johnbull (in which he starred) did.

I also authored and released ‘The Testator’ in less than a year. It adds to the corpus of knowledge. Nigerians’ reading culture is being revived by us.”

The actor also used the occasion to establish the ‘Kanayo O Kanayo Foundation.’

The birthday boy’s two ‘triumphant’ entry, both dressed in all-white clothes, were among the event’s highlights. Kanayo wore a bowler hat in his first ‘appearance,’ while a traditional red cap used by Igboland chiefs in his second appearance.
In a session moderated by famed comedian Ayo Makun, aka AY, he was later joined on stage by his children to cut the birthday cake.
