Lawan, Akpabio Make APC List Of Senatorial Candidates

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced Ahmad Lawan as its candidate for the Yobe North senatorial district in the 2023 elections.

This came despite the fact that Bashir Machina, the district’s APC primary winner, refused to step down in favour of Lawan, who was running for the party’s presidential nomination. Abdullahi Adamu, the APC’s national chairman, announced him as the party’s consensus candidate shortly before the primary began.
Several party stakeholders, including members of the national working committee (NWC), objected to the consensus decision, and Bola Tinubu, the former Lagos governor, won the party’s ticket in the June 8 primary.

Machina had insisted that he would not drop out of the Senate race because he had received delegates’ votes in an uncontested election.

“I’m confident he had no intention of returning to the National Assembly.” That is why he ran for president and was unsuccessful. This is the definition of democracy. It’s a free space. People who wanted to compete had a set amount of time to do so. “Timetables were established, party guidelines were developed, and elections were eventually held,” he explained. Lawan was named as the party’s candidate for Yobe North in a signed list of candidates obtained by TheCable yesterday.
Former Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, was also reported to have made the list for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, despite former deputy inspector general of police, Mr Udom EKpoudom (rtd.) vowing not to relinquish the APC senatorial ticket he won on May 27, 2022 to Akpabio or anyone else, no matter the pressure. Mr Stephen Ntuekpo, the state party’s chairman, had stated that he had been directed to hold a new primary on June 8, 2022, citing security infractions in the district’s May 27, 2022 APC primary. With 478 votes out of 512 accredited delegates, Akpabio was declared the winner in the new primary.
However, the APC candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District, Bashir Machina, has threatened to sue over the alleged substitution of his name with that of the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, in the list submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday.
After the ruling party uploaded Lawan’s name on the commission’s server alongside other senatorial candidates from the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory, INEC recognised him as the APC’s candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District.
Lawan did not run in the party’s presidential primary, where he was defeated by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The APC, on the other hand, had written to INEC, informing it that the Senate president would be its nominee for the Yobe North senatorial seat.
Machina, who ran for the district’s primary and won, was enraged by the development and promised last night to take the attempt to steal his mandate to court.
Machina told journalists in Abuja yesterday that if his name is not corrected, he will have no choice but to seek legal redress.
“In the list sent to INEC, my name was found to be misrepresented,” Machina said, vowing never to back down on his mandate. My name was not on the list of names that was supposed to be presented to INEC today, and I’m not sure if that was a mistake. For the avoidance of doubt, I am the APC Yobe North zone C senatorial candidate who was duly elected.

“I am the elected candidate; I did not withdraw for anyone and will not withdraw because members of our great party, the delegates, gave me that mandate as a matter of right. As a result, I believe that removing my name in secret is undemocratic, illegal, and, of course, inhumane. Insha Allah, I will take action, beginning by reminding and appealing to my party that if this action is truly done, it must be corrected, particularly if it is done incorrectly. We are actually seeking redress from our party’s National Working Committee, which is led by Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman, and is seeking to correct an anomaly.

“I am still the candidate.” I’m hoping that our leaders will take the appropriate steps. As outlined in our guideline, we will work diligently to exploit and explore all available channels. In the event that this is not the case, I will have no choice but to resort to court (legal) action as a Nigerian citizen and law abiding citizen, the constitution of our country being the overall law that governs all aspects of our lives as Nigerians. This is what I intend to convey to Nigerians via this medium: that something unusual and illegal is about to happen, and it is undemocratic. This is a democratically organised political party. The people’s will always reigns supreme, and the best way to demonstrate that will is to vote, as they did to elect me. The electorate in my senatorial district has placed their trust in me, and this is the simplest challenge I will face in protecting their rights.”

ASUU, other strikes causing irreparable damage to education – JAMB chief

Prof Ishaq, Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has said that continuous strikes by unions in Nigerian tertiary institutions are causing irreparable damage to the country’s educational system.

In a separate event, the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) explained why the group has called a halt to nationwide protests in response to the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ strike.
Oloyede made the remarks yesterday in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, when JAMB, in collaboration with Project Cure, a US-based organisation, presented a multi-billion naira medical equipment to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for improved health care delivery in the country.

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) members are currently on strike. According to Oloyede, the strike is pointless.

“While acknowledging that the primary responsibility for reasonable (even if insufficient) funding of public health and education institutions lies with the proprietors—the government,” he continued, “may I take this opportunity to call on employers and university-based labour unions to appreciate the irreparable damage of incessant strikes on not only the students but also the nation.”

Oloyede stated that the board’s intervention in the area of health care delivery was to support the government’s efforts to address the massive medical infrastructural gap. He also stated that JAMB would continue to trim its expenses through prudent management, adoption of relevant cost-saving technology, and other efficiency-strategies to free up resources to support major stakeholders such as tertiary health and educational institutions in order to uplift the health sector.

The hospital equipment, he said, was for 12 beneficiaries’ health facilities across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

An anglepoise lamp, ventilator, consumables, mattress, OG couch, gynaecology chair, treatment table, treadmill machine, crutches, ICU beds, urinary catheters, defibrillator machines, laparoscopy machines, needle and syringes, wheelchairs, Oxygen concentrator, suction machines, endoscopy machines, and other items are among the equipment.

NANS accused the Federal Government of sabotaging genuine protests to compel lecturers to reopen public universities while explaining why it had suspended its nationwide protests over the ongoing ASUU strike.

ASUU began a one-month strike on February 14, which was extended to two months later.

“In the area of the ASUU strike,” said NANS Senate President Chuks Okafor in a statement on Friday. We’ve tried our hardest to communicate with government agencies, but we can only lead the horse to the water, not force it. But, as Nigerian student leaders, we will continue to communicate with the government and ASUU leadership to ensure that the strike is called off as soon as possible.”

Since the 9th of May, 2022, Okafor has expressed concern about INEC’s inability to obey the Supreme Court judgement of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) leadership.

The student body demanded that INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on APGA leadership without delay, or face mass protests.

Davido Thrills at Afroworld Festival

Davido’s performance at the Dubai concert elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, with the majority praising the singer for his crowd control skills.

The award-winning Afrobeats singer quickly shared his plans for the next few days with fans while basking in the euphoria of his classic Dubai show. In a tweet, the DMW boss confirmed the official release date for his project with Ckay and South African rapper Focalistic, titled “Love Nwantiti.” According to him, the ‘biggest club banga’ will be released on Friday, and it will feature the above-mentioned musicians.

Wande Coal is called out for beating up Lagos residents

Wande Coal, a Nigerian singer, has been charged with assaulting a Lagos State resident.

Wande Coal and his team allegedly assaulted his elder brother, according to @Folarin AA on Twitter.

His brother, whose name was not revealed, was allegedly slapped and beaten mercilessly while attempting to get his car out of the way of Wande Coal.

“You’re a b**tard Wande Coal and you wouldn’t get away with what you did to my brother this evening,” he wrote on Twitter. “My elder brother called me subbing like a child because you and your gang beat him mercilessly simply because his vehicle was in your way.”

“This b**tard and his gang demanded that my brother remove his vehicle so that they could move; my brother agreed and went to get his car keys; however, as soon as he approached his car to open it, one of them slapped him, and before he could say anything else, another punched him.

“I’ve never been so enraged in my life.” My older brother referred to me as a child subbing. They thrashed him so badly that he was inconsolably crying. “Who do you think you are?” enquires the narrator.

He promised Wande Coal that he would not get away with such mistreatment.

“My brother has a swollen face and a black eye and is in tears. All because of what, exactly? My brother is the most laid-back individual I’ve ever met. He always tries to stay out of trouble, so I’m pretty sure he didn’t do anything to deserve to be treated that way. “You’re not going to get away with it,” he said.

However, as of the time of filing this report, Wande Coal or his management had yet to confirm or deny the allegations.

Be neutral in 2022, don’t set Ekiti on fire – Segun Oni issues public warning to politicians, Police

Segun Oni, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ekiti State, claimed on Friday that some desperate politicians are already breaking the peace accord signed before the National Peace Commission led by Gen Abdudalami Abubakar.

Oni claimed that rather than following democratic principles in the June 18 Ekiti election, those he referred to as “oppressors” had allegedly dehumanised and demobilised his supporters through unlawful arrests.

Mr. Adeniran Tella, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), and other security formations, according to Oni, must be neutral and ensure justice, fairness, and equity for the election to be peaceful and trouble-free.

Oni, who spoke to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Friday, warned INEC, the international community, security agencies, observers, and other stakeholders about the importance of strict adherence to democratic ethos in the election’s conduct.

“For this election to be valid, all forms EC8A, EC8B, EC8C, and EC8D must be stamped and signed by the REC and not by any other agent or staff.” Nobody will be able to smuggle any type of fake results once the REC stamps and signs them.

“Polling officers must upload results at polling units in the presence of party agents.” To compensate for network failure, INEC must provide alternative network providers.

“No one should be able to tamper with the outcomes.” The backbone of democratic practise is an election. If you haven’t interacted with the public in the four years since your election, you will almost certainly be rejected. Subterfuge should not be allowed to be used to win an election.”

“I will keep to the peace accord,” Oni said of the importance of peace for the election’s success. However, peace can only be guaranteed if you stand for justice, equity, truth, and fairness.

“However, when people are kidnapped, every peace document becomes null and void.” Let us warn them not to set fire to this state. Those who have been attempting to kidnap my supporters should be brought to justice right now. They are putting the people’s patience and tolerance to the test.

“Three days ago, one of my supporters was arrested and detained by a section of the police for alleged kidnapping.”

“They should not set fire to this state.” If someone commits an offence and believes they are the authorities, the peace agreement is immediately shattered.

“As a governor, I did not steal, which is why the people of Ekiti support me, and I should set a good example for all our politicians to learn how to be content.”

Mbaka vs. Peter Obi: Holy Spirit does not vote, so get your PVC – Cubana Chief-Priest

Rev. father Ejike Mbaka, a Catholic priest, described Presidential candidate Peter Obi as a stingy man, which sparked outrage.

Mbaka stated during his most recent visit to the Adoration ministry in Enugu State that Obi cannot be Nigeria’s president unless he seeks God’s forgiveness.

He believes that having an old man as Nigeria’s next president is preferable to having a’stingy man.’

In response to Mbaka’s statement, popular Instagram celebrity Pascal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chiefpriest, urged Nigerians to get their PVCs, adding that the Holy Spirit does not vote.

“Mr. Money with the vibes right now,” Cubana wrote alongside a photo of Father Mbaka on his Instagram page. Wake up, don’t sleep, and collect your money.

“Please get your PVC, Holy Spirit no Dey vote,” says the narrator.

Meanwhile, Mbaka’s political comments have been distanced from the Catholic Church.

Mbaka’s inflammatory political comments, according to the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu, Rev Ernest Obodo, were divisive and violated the Canon Law, which prohibits anyone from illegitimately harming a person’s good name.

Ifeanyi Okowa betrayed us for accepting PDP vice presidential nomination — Edwin Clark, others

On Friday, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) condemned Delta State Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for accepting his nomination as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Presidential Candidature for the 2023 general elections.

Chief Edwin Clark, for the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) and the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF); Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere; Dr. Dru Bitrus, President-General, Middle Belt Forum; and Prof. George Obiozor, President-General, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide signed a statement.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the current Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum and a native of Owa-Alero in Delta State’s Ika North-East Local Government Area (one of the Igbo-speaking areas), was described by elder statesmen as “unspeakable” and “disappointing” for accepting the position of vice president.

They recalled that on May 11, 2021, 17 Southern governors from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, met in Asaba, Delta State, and made far-reaching decisions, including that the presidency should rotate to the South at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s statutory eight-year term.

Governor Okowa hosted the historic meeting, they said, adding that the Southern governors met again in Lagos on July 5 to reaffirm their decision, and again in Enugu on September 16 to restate their call for the presidency to rotate to the South in 2023.

“It is therefore most unfortunate that Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of Delta State, who should have known better, accepted his appointment as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.” We have nothing personal against Ifeanyi Okowa, but his actions are treacherous and amount to a despicable pawning of the people of Southern Nigeria’s political future.” According to the statement,

Governor Okowa has betrayed the trust placed in him by his colleagues, the southern governors, the entire good people of southern Nigeria, and all well-meaning Nigerians, according to the group, adding that he has made himself persona non grata, not only with the SMBLF, but also with all citizens who value our oneness and yearn for a more united and peaceful Nigeria.

The group said it had rejected Okowa for the position of vice president, calling the governor’s decision “a betrayal of the highest order.”

It went on to say that this was not a matter of political party loyalty, but rather a greedy, parochial, and unpatriotic act against the general interest of his state, Delta State, the Niger Delta region, and Southern Nigeria. It is also not in the national interest.

Tension in Zamfara due to planned telecommunications network shutdown

Panic has returned to Zamfara State as a result of the state government’s plan to shut down the state’s telecommunications network.

Following the rising security challenges that have ravaged the State, the Governor announced on Wednesday through his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Hon. Zailani Bappa, that the government may impose stringent security measures.

The Governor made the remarks in response to the abduction of 30 youths along the Sokoto-Zamfara road last weekend, claiming that the rising activities of informants to bandits had resurfaced in the state.

He bemoaned the rise in informant activities, which are providing information to bandits who are targeting innocent citizens, and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to take more stringent measures to combat the threat, including telecommunications shutdowns if necessary.

The announcement has sparked widespread consternation in the state, as residents recall previous events that have had a significant impact on people’s economic lives.

Remember that in September 2021, the State government put in place some security measures, including the shutting down of telecommunication network services, to combat the insecurity situation that was plaguing the state.

According to reports, neighbouring states such as Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Niger have followed suit with their security measures.

Terrorist attacks on innocent citizens continued unabated despite these security measures, prompting the suspension after about two months.

Dr. Alhaji Muhammad Gusau, an activist, has commented on the matter on his Facebook page, claiming that the State government is considering shutting down telecommunication network services due to security concerns in the state.

“This will have a significant impact on the state’s economy, and it is not a wise decision.” Ordinary people were harmed when the government shut down the networks from September to October, and in some cases, until nearly December.

“All legitimate endeavours were halted, livelihoods were harmed, but the security measures yielded no positive results in terms of the security of lives and property in the State,” he said.

However, another public commentator, Alhaji Ahmed Bakare, a proponent of good governance in the state, made the following statement on Facebook:

“No record of improvement was released from Defense Headquarters when the State government first shut down telecommunication network services in 2021 because it used to release timely progress updates,” says the report.

“Neither the State government nor the Governor claimed to have had any success, except for the Governor’s claim that over a hundred informants had been apprehended.”

“Yet no suspect has been arraigned or prosecuted,” lamented the public commentator.

“Rather than ignoring communication opportunities, a serious government should use them to track down, isolate, and potentially attack criminal targets.”

“I don’t believe the people of Zamfara can afford to go through such an ordeal a second time if the state’s telecommunication network services are again shut down,” he said.

However, Hon. Zailani Bappa, the Governor’s spokesman, claims that the public misinterpreted the Governor’s statement.

Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle, according to him, stated that the security agencies would advise him and that if necessary, he would shut down telecommunication network services.

Police kill four bandits and apprehend female arms supplier in Kaduna

According to the Kaduna State Police Command, its officers killed four bandits in a gunfight and detained a female guns and ammunition supplier in the state.

The success, according to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Muhammed Jalige, was the result of a sustained onslaught against banditry and other criminal elements in the state by operatives of the Special Tactical Squad Force Headquarters, Abuja, in conjunction with Operation Yaki of the State Command on June 15, 2022, at around 0650hrs, while on the trail of suspected bandits intercepted their target along the Saminaka–Jos expressway.
He stated they were apprehended in a Sharon car, blue in colour, operated by James Dawi, 31, of Vom town in Plateau State’s Jos South LGA.

“Sensing an inescapable hazard presented on their approach to transfer some lethal weapons to their accomplices,” the suspected bandits “quickly engaged the operators in intermittent gunfire,” according to Jalige.

“However, the operators were able to terminally hurt four suspects with tactical precision.” The injured suspects were airlifted to Kaduna’s Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, where a medical specialist pronounced them dead.

“The shootout lasted around 30 minutes, and the Police’s firepower led the robbers to flee into the forest with gunshot wounds.”

The following exhibits were discovered during a search of the car and the surrounding area: one AK49 rifle loaded with six rounds of live ammunition, one AK47 rifle, one empty magazine, 134 rounds of various calibres of live ammunition, and an operating motor vehicle.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of a female accomplice, who confessed to supplying arms and ammunition to bandits in Kaduna State during the course of investigation. Meanwhile, a discreet investigation into the case has been launched with the aim of unravelling the identities of other criminal gangs, as well as finding the source of these dangerous weapons, in order to prevent future occurrences and make the criminals face the full wrath of the law.”

“The Commissioner of Police for Kaduna Command, CP Yekinin A. Ayoku, has praised the well-executed intelligence-driven tactical operation that led to the breakthrough.”

“He promised the good people of Kaduna State that the Command will be uncompromising in the fight against the enemies of collective security under the command of the Inspector General of Police, with robust backing from the State Government and active coordination with other security agencies,” he said.

“The Commissioner also urged members of the public to continue to provide important information about all types of criminal activity to the police, saying that officers under his command would treat such information with promptitude and strict secrecy.”
