    Lagos community approaches court over land encroachment

    Landlords at the Ogudu Muslim Community Praying Ground in Lagos’ Oworonsoki area have filed a complaint with the Lagos High Court over a suspected land grabber’s forceful encroachment on their praying ground.

    The aggrieved landlords are seeking a declaration that they were the rightful owners of the land based on their Certificate of Occupancy and Deed of Assignment in two separate suits filed before Justice Gbadebo Oshoala and Justice A.M Lawal at the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, marked ID/1722LMW/2022 and ID/1724LMW/2022.

    Prince Wale Alaba Oyekoya, Mrs. Pauline Wandoo NSA, and Ms. Oreoluwa Edowaye Obasuyi are the plaintiffs in the case.

    The claimants requested a declaration from the court in their originating summons dated April 6, 2022, that Ajibola Bisiriyu and some thugs are trespassing on their land parcel.

    They also want a court order directing Ajibola Bisiriyu to rebuild or re-erect the perimeter fence that was allegedly destroyed by thugs around the parcel of land.

    The aggrieved landlords are seeking N200 million in damages from Ajibola Bisiriyu, which would cover the cost of the tons of iron rods, sand, and granite carted away by his thugs, as well as the cost of rebuilding the perimeter fence destroyed by the Defendants during their invasions in April 2021 and March 2022.

    They are requesting an additional N100 million in compensation for the psychological torture they endured as well as the trauma caused by the invasion.

    The claimants claimed that the defendant invaded the land in April 2021 with police officers from the Lagos State Taskforce and thugs, claiming that the land had been allocated to him for estate development by the state government.

    According to the aggrieved Landlords’ affidavit in support, “the thugs destroyed their perimeter fence and carted away tons of iron rods, sand, granite, and other materials used as materials for the ongoing construction on the land, and they also demolished the existing uncompleted buildings on their land” during the invasion.

    The aggrieved landlords claimed they sought redress by approaching the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers of the Ministry of Justice and writing a petition to the Nigeria Police Zone 2 Command.

    They claimed that the two authorities’ attempts to have Ajibola Bisiriyu appear before them to substantiate his claims were futile because Bisiriyu refused to do so.

    Following that, the aggrieved landlords sought a restraining order against the defendant in a Lagos State High Court.

    FG plans to eliminate multiple taxes in transportation sector

    According to Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Federal Government is finalising plans to eliminate multiple taxes in the transportation sector in order to reduce the cost of doing business in the country.

    On Wednesday, Ajani made the announcement at the National Transportation Technology Conference and Exhibition (NTTCE), a two-day conference and exhibition in Lagos.

    The theme of the conference, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), is: Intergovernmental cooperation between federal and sub-national governments in seamless policy, regulation, and tax regimes: The role of the natural gas expansion programme.

    Ajani stated that streamlining the various taxation in the sector was necessary to boost growth and development.

    She claimed that multiple taxation was detrimental to business development and sustainability.

    According to the permanent secretary, one of the issues affecting the sector is unregulated taxation, which has impacted the cost of doing business in the country.

    She stated that the law governing the country’s transportation sector accommodated the roles of the federal, state, and local governments.

    Ajani stated that the type of segment to cover, such as motor parks and licences for both divers and vehicles, was left up to a specific level of government.

    “What we discover is that multiple road stickers are being sold to road users by different groups of people.”

    ” As a result, this tends to raise the cost of doing business in road transportation and must be regulated.”

    “Those claiming that the Federal Ministry of Transportation gave them permission to collect money on its behalf are incorrect,” Ajani said.

    Dr Frederic Oladeinde, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, also spoke and praised the Federal Government’s efforts to address multiple taxation issues in the sector.

    According to Oladeinde, the development will benefit state governments’ transportation policies.

    He stated that technology was the way forward in driving the sector to become more efficient and effective.

    “We have deployed a lot of technology in Lagos; we’re talking about the Cowry cards to integrate the mode of transportation.”

    “We’re looking into integrating the mode of transportation’s timetable to reduce waiting time,” he said.

    The Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corp Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, stated that the corps has been using technology to improve its mode of operation.

    He stated that technology had aided in reducing response time to crash scenes and electronic ticketing in the issuance of traffic tickets.

    Ogungbemide stated that the corps would continue to ensure that our roads are safe and free of accidents.

    Mrs Chinwe Uwaegbute, Secretary of the Nigeria Transportation Commissioners’ Forum, stated that the conference brought together all of the key stakeholders in the transportation sector to develop policy to propel the industry forward.

    “The conference raised many issues, such as the challenges of double taxation, the need for interconnectivity for all modes of transportation for ease of doing business,” she said.

    “The outcome of this conference will chart a course for better growth and development of this sector.”

    “The Federal Ministry of Transportation is also participating in this conference, and we hope that the points raised here will be used to generate policies that will aid growth in the sector.”

    Despite the global devastation caused by COVID-19, one-third of Nigerian adults say they are unlikely to get vaccinated against the pandemic, with many believing the virus does not exist.

    This is the result of a new poll conducted by Afrobarometer in collaboration with NOI Polls.

    Dr Chike Nwangwu, the chief executive officer of NOI Polls, presented this report to the public on Monday in Abuja, saying the result of this recent poll is the result of random sampling conducted across the country.

    “In March 2022, the NOIpolls-led Afrobarometer team in Nigeria interviewed a nationally representative sample of 1,600 adult Nigerians.” At a 95 percent confidence level, a sample of this size produces country-level results with a margin of error of +/-2.5 percentage points.”

    “Fewer than four in ten citizens report having received a vaccination against the virus,” according to the report.

    The report also touched on the general perception of palliative measures against the effects of the pandemic, revealing that the majority of households in the country did not have access to them.

    “As the government attempts to respond to the economic and social impact of the pandemic, three out of every ten citizens say someone in their household lost a job, a business, or a primary source of income as a result of the pandemic, but far fewer report receiving government assistance to weather the fallout.”

    “Most citizens also believe that government corruption cost resources intended for pandemic response.”

    According to the report, 28 percent of Nigerians have lost a job, business, or primary source of income as a result of the pandemic, while only 37 percent have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

    Twenty-nine percent of citizens who say they are unlikely to get vaccinated do so for a variety of reasons, including the fact that COVID-19 does not exist and is thus not life-threatening. 18% are sceptical of the vaccine.

    In her presentation, Dr Ruqqaya Wamako, director of PHC FCT PHCB, urged Nigerians to abandon their scepticism about vaccines, claiming that they are clinically tested and reliable.

    Other stakeholders made presentations, including Lionel Essima, CDD Ghana’s assistant survey manager for North and West Africa, and Professor Meg Igholo, head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Abuja.

    Timi Dakolo’s hit song, ‘Great Nation,’ was played at the APC presidential primaries on Tuesday, when members of the Nigerian entertainment industry appeared on stage as Ambassadors of Voice for Change to lend their voices to the country’s call for peace and unity.

    The ruling party invited the group, which included veteran actors such as Zack Orji, Gentle Giant, and others, as they joined the call for Nigerian unity.

    Dakolo, on the other hand, took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to claim that he was not consulted before his song was used at the event.

    The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale-Martins, has criticised the delegate method used by political parties in the country to select party flag bearers ahead of the 2023 general election.

    Adewale-Martins stated this in an interview with NAN in Lagos on Tuesday.

    He described it as utopian and defective to give only a few party members the right to elect party standard-bearers.

    Adewale-Martins expressed dissatisfaction with moneybag politics and called for the repeal of electoral law provisions that allow parties to choose their flag bearers through delegates.

    “There is a need for us to change the process with an open party member’s primary to make it more acceptable and inclusive.”

    Jelani Aliyu, the director general of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), has urged Spanish companies to invest in vehicle production in Nigeria.
    The DG gave the advice as a panellist at the Nigeria-Spanish Business and Trade Forum in Madrid, Spain, where President Muhammadu Buhari delivered the keynote address.

    “Vehicles can be produced in Nigeria both for local markets and exports, leveraging on the Africa Continental Free Trade Area,” Aliyu said, highlighting the vast opportunities in the Nigerian automotive industry (AfCFTA).

    “Nigeria is ready for innovation and advanced automotive solutions, products, and services, and Spanish companies could really add significant value to the automotive space in Nigeria.”

    The summit brought together researchers, engineers, government officials, and electric vehicle-related companies and institutions from around the world to explore and discuss technical, policy, market, achievements, and potentials in electric mobility.
    The DG discussed Nigeria’s current achievements in electric mobility as well as the sector’s strong potential in Nigeria and Africa.

    The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken its consumer enlightenment programme to communities in Nasarawa State to sensitise them about their rights, obligations, and privileges as part of its commitment to enlighten telecom service consumers.
    Furthermore, the engagement was organised to inform telecom consumers about the Commission’s consumer-centric initiatives, which consumers can use to improve their telecom usage experience.

    Amina Shehu, the NCC’s Director, Zonal Operations, said at the event, which took place recently in Keffi, Nassarawa State, that the engagement was in line with the NCC’s mandate to constantly educate consumers on telecom service-related issues bordering on improving their quality of service experience.

    Usman Abubakar, an Assistant Director in the department, addressed the participants on behalf of Shehu, saying the Commission had developed a series of engagement programmes to keep telecom consumers informed of developments in the telecoms sector in order to protect consumers from any unwholesome practises.

    Thus, participants in the sensitization programme were educated on a variety of topics, including Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration, the redress process for consumer complaints arising from illegal deductions, and the illegal sale of improperly-registered cards, among others.
    According to Abubakar, the Commission recently directed all subscribers to ensure that their SIM cards are linked to their National Identification Numbers (NIN), or their mobile lines will be disconnected.

    “As a general rule in the Nigerian telecommunications industry today, every mobile subscriber must register his/her SIM card before activation, as there are penalties for the sale and purchase of fraudulently-registered SIM cards.” “We also urge you, as telecom customers, not to allow another person to use your NIN to register other people’s SIM cards,” he said.
    Concerning complaint resolution, Abubakar told consumers that it is their right to be satisfactorily attended to by their service providers in order to resolve any service-related complaints they may have. He did, however, mention that if such a complaint was not satisfactorily resolved by their mobile network operator (MNO), consumers should use the NCC toll-free number 622 to report such a case for necessary escalation and resolution.

    Abubakar also stated that the Commission’s Do-Not-Disturb (DND) 2442 short code, which consumers can use to manage cases of unsolicited messages on their mobile phones, is another consumer-centric initiative. “Millions of telecom consumers have used this short code to stop or manage spam text message cases on their mobile devices, and we encourage you to do the same,” he added.

    During the event, the NCC team addressed a number of consumer complaints by obtaining the necessary information from the Commission, while others were advised to contact their service providers to resolve specific service-related issues. Some of the issues include automatic switching from one data plan to another without the consumer’s consent, as well as illegal airtime or data deductions.
