    Family, friends, and well-wishers flocked to Lagos and Osun yesterday to pray and celebrate the 65th birthday of Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

    Former Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Tourism, Osun State, Prince Adetona Sikiru Ayedun, speaking in Lagos, one of the celebration locations, said they were in the state to celebrate the birthday of their mentor, benefactor, and trailblazer, Aregbesola.

    “The man we are honouring today is a great mentor, a politician, and a core activist, and we are all politicians who have benefited greatly from his ocean of wisdom and benevolence,” Ayedun said. Our purpose in gathering here is to honour him, God’s presence in his life, and his entire family.”

    Alhaji Rafiu Olorunwa, the former Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said: “We are here to celebrate our mentor and leader, Ogbeni Rafiu Aregbesola, who is 65 years old.”

    “By culture, whether towards election period or not, that should not stop one celebrating with someone that is celebrating, because Aregbeshola, who we are celebrating, is a man of honour and he deserves more than this that we have shown to him,” said Olorunwa, who believes politics should not prevent people from celebrating with someone who deserves to be celebrated.

    “There is no way to describe him in such a way that you would not want to meet him.” He is a man who puts his trust in God, knowing that nothing can happen without God’s permission, and he is generous and a firm believer in humanity over political activities.”

    Babatunde Olaoluwa, another ardent supporter of the minister, urged everyone to work with the party leadership to ensure a peaceful primary election, saying, “People are busy right now because the primary election is around the corner.” Our advice to everyone is to follow the rules and the directives of the party’s leadership because they see things better and know more.

    Nigerian food prices have increased in the last 12 months – NBS

    According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the cost of certain foodstuffs has risen in the last year.

    The NBS Selected Food Price Watch Report for April 2022, released on Thursday in Abuja, confirms this.

    The average price of 1kg of Beans (white, black eye, sold loose) increased by 44.32 percent year over year, from N359.64 in April 2021 to N519.05 in April 2022, according to the report.
    In March 2022, this increased by 2.59 percent on a month-over-month basis, to N505.94.

    The average price of sliced 500g bread increased by 35.31 percent year over year, from N332.95 in April 2021 to N450.51 in April 2022, according to the report.

    “The average price of this item increased 0.61 percent month over month in April 2022.”
    Similarly, the average price of a kilogramme of yam tuber increased 42.88 percent year over year, according to the report.

    In April 2021, the value was N252.80, and in April 2022, the value was N361.20.

    It said it increased by 2.16 percent month over month, from N353.56 in March 2022 to N361.20 in April 2022.
    Similarly, the average price of Palm oil (1 bottle) increased by 45.59 percent from N578.86 in April 2021 to N842.75 in April 2022, according to the report. On a month-over-month basis, it grew by 0.06 percent.

    According to the report, the average price of 1kg unripe Plantain increased by 38.66% year over year, from N243.37 in April 2021 to N337.47 in April 2022.
    The average price of groundnut oil (1 bottle) in April 2022 was N1, 007.68, up 46.21 percent from N689.19 in April 2021, according to the report.
    “From N994.62 in March 2022, it increased by 1.31 percent month over month.”

    Ebonyi had the highest average price of Beans (white, black eye, sold loose) at N875.71, while Borno had the lowest at N256.67, according to the report.

    According to the report, Ebonyi had the highest average price of bread sliced at 500g, at N650.0, while Borno had the lowest, at N261.38.
    The highest price for a kilogramme of yam tuber was N695.93 in Akwa-Ibom, while the lowest was N133.28 in Bauchi, according to the report.
    According to the report, the South-East had the highest average price of brown beans sold loose (N831.09), followed by the South-South (N676.13), and the North-East had the lowest (N307.21).

    “Similarly, the South-East had the highest average price of sliced 500g bread, at N601.09, followed by the South-South at N550.21, and the North-East had the lowest, at N278.51.”

    According to the report, the average price of 1 kilogramme of yam tuber was higher in the South-West and South-South, at N528.78 and N495.02, respectively, while the lowest was in the North-East, at N142.79.

    The EFCC brought charges against all 14 people, and they all pleaded guilty.
    The convicts were sentenced to a year in prison and a N1 million fine, respectively, by Justice Buba.

    The seized devices and other property would be auctioned, with the proceeds going to the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA).

    Due to the adjournment of its leader Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has cancelled its sit-at-home order for tomorrow and rescheduled it for June 28.

    Recall that on Wednesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja postponed the trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently detained.

    His Majesty Obi Dr. E.O. Efeizomor 11 JP OON, the Obi of Owa and the immediate past Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, has called for greater unity and purpose among kings in the Ika nation and the state in general.

    The Obi made the announcement last weekend at a meeting of Ika North East Local Government Area’s traditional rulers held at Owa Palace in Owa Oyibu.

    According to Obi Efeizomor, there is no alternative to kings’ unity in Ika land, as such synergy will bring about the area’s needed socio-cultural, economic, and political developments.

    He urged the kings to rise above primitive sentiment and political tokenism from gladiators who did not have the institution’s best interests at heart.

    He stated that kings must carry themselves with pride because of their royal position in society as custodians of the people’s culture and traditions.

    The monarch emphasised the need for security agencies to increase their efforts in all communities across the state, particularly in Delta North, due to the activities of miscreants who hide behind pro-Biafra agitation, saying the recent reported attack allegedly carried out by some pro-Biafra agitators is a concerning development.

    “Because of the events of previous years, which resulted in a brutal and bloody civil war,” he says, “the authorities should handle the agitators and the agitation with care.” The events are still fresh in our minds, and the Delta North residents have suffered unimaginable losses. We don’t want that to happen again. We want peace because we are Delta State residents who value peace.     A delegation of Liberian Eminent Persons paid a visit to Accord Party (AP) governorship candidate Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, yesterday, to express gratitude for his positive contributions to the country’s economic growth.

    The Liberian delegation, led by Ambassador Dew Tuan-Wleh Mayson and his wife, Roberta, donated $100,000 to Ogunbiyi and included a representative from the Disability Union of Liberia (DUL), DJ Constance, and the chairman of the Organization of Liberians Abroad (OLA).

    Mayson, who is also a professor, said that while travelling to Nigeria was difficult at the time, they had to come and show their support for Ogunbiyi, saying: “He is a distinguished and reliable individual, and Osun State will be fortunate to have him as their governor.”

    He went on to explain how the incoming governor has aided the people in Liberia in terms of entrepreneurship, and how he has touched and freed many lives from poverty.

    While presenting Ogunbiyi with a $100,000 donation and a book written by Mayson, the professor stated that if the Osun people understood the candidate’s tenacity and capacity, as well as what he accomplished in a country that had been devastated by war, they would not consider anyone else for the governorship position in the state.

    Constance, who is currently the president of DUL, went on to say how Ogunbiyi was a great help when the organisation needed it in Liberia, and he ended his speech with a song to show his appreciation for the Accord Party’s standard bearer.

    In his response, Ogunbiyi, who had business interests in Liberia, Niger Republic, and the United Kingdom, thanked God for the steps he took to establish his company in Liberia after the war in 1996, and for the success he has since achieved.

    He also stated that his desire to be the state governor was motivated by his love for the country, Osun State, and its people.

    “In the corporate world, I am a colossus,” he claims. Only for the sake of our people am I running for this leadership position. When the PDP wrecked the country for 16 years, the APC has made things worse.

    “For the past 12 years, the APC has ruled Osun State. In productivity, agriculture, education, mining, and health care, there is no initiative. We can’t stand by and watch them further degrade this state, because the state is deteriorating with each passing day, despite the fact that resources exist to improve it.”

    Muhammad Nami, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has stated that the FIRS has refused to sign the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECDG20 )’s Inclusive Framework solution to the taxation of the digital economy because some of its provisions would prevent some digital companies from being taxed.

    Nami said the agreement is unfair to Nigeria and developing countries because most digital companies do not generate as much revenue as the agreement proposes before being taxed.
    “For example, to tax any digital sale or any multinational enterprise (MNE), the company or enterprise must have a global annual turnover of €20 billion and a global profitability of 10%. This is something to be concerned about. Because the vast majority of MNEs operating in our country do not meet these criteria, we would be unable to tax them.”

    “Secondly, the €20 billion global annual turnover in question does not apply to a single accounting year; rather, the enterprise must generate €20 billion in revenue and maintain a 10% profit margin for four years in a row, or it will never pay tax in our country,” the statement read.

    He pointed out that the rule requiring multinational companies to pay tax after generating at least €1 million in revenue from Nigeria within a year is unfair because domestic companies with a minimum of N25 million (€57,000) in revenue must pay company income tax.

    On Sunday, May 22nd, 2022, Fatima and her small children were murdered by unidentified men.

    “We specifically request that the British Embassy in Nigeria, as well as other Western sources, condemn this heinous act with the same vehemence with which they have condemned other killings.”

    “In the same vein, we call on all social critics who have condemned other heinous acts to speak out against this latest atrocity.”

    “We demand that comments on Nigerian events be fair. Selective condemnation of evil will not bring peace to Nigeria or the rest of the world.

    Court Declares APM Executive Offices Vacant

    The continuous retention of all executive officers of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) by a Federal High Court in Abuja has been declared ultra vires, unconstitutional, illegal, and a direct affront to the Electoral Act, 2010.

    The holding officers of the party (APM) were found to be in violation of the party’s constitution, thus declaring their seat unconstitutional and devoid of due process.

    The plaintiffs, Imuseh Ome Ebere Mercy and Hon. Kukang Ken Barine, brought an action before the court in FHC/ABJ/CS/1253/21, via an originating summons dated October 20, 2021, where they disputed some issues for the court to decide.

    The plaintiffs argued that the Allied People’s Movement’s executive officers’ continued stay in the country was illegal.

    The plaintiffs claimed that the executive officers were appointed without consulting the party’s constitution and conventions as required by section 9.

    Enyinnaya Eme, Esq, counsel for the plaintiffs, told reporters in Abuja that section 9 of the APM constitution states, “Every position of the party shall be held by democratically elected officers of the party.”

    He also cited Section 223 of the 1999 constitution, which states, “Every political party’s constitution shall provide for periodic elections to elect their national executives.”

    As a result of the plaintiffs’ originating summons, Justice Okorowo declared that the office of the 1st defendant (APM) had become vacant by operation of law for failure to organise a convention that would usher in democratically elected officers of the 1st defendant and thus occupying their various positions illegally.

    “An order is hereby made directing the 1st defendant to manage the 1st defendant’s affairs for three months within which they must conduct ward, Local Government, state, and national Congresses that will usher in democratically elected officers of the 1st defendant,” Justice Okorowo continued.

    “An order is hereby made directing the 4th defendant to monitor and supervise all of the 1st defendant’s congresses to be organised by the 1st defendant’s Registered Trustees.”

    “An order is hereby made directing the 1st defendant’s Registered Trustees to give the 4th defendant at least 21 days’ notice of the said convention’s conduct.”

    The APM, Chairman, Board of Trustees, APM, the National Chairman, APM, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, for the 1,2,3,4 defendants, are the defendants in the case.
