Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was found guilty of shooting US artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet after a heated altercation following a party in Hollywood. He was given a 10-year prison term on Tuesday.
After learning that Lanez had yelled “Dance, bitch” while shooting at the hip-hop diva as she stood in the street, a judge in Los Angeles gave the sentence.
The punishment followed Lanez’s conviction in December for assault with a semiautomatic weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm, and transportation of a loaded, unregistered firearm.
According to the prosecution, Lanez’s actions left the “WAP” performer with bodily and psychological scars, and they asked for a 13-year sentence.
The request from Lanez’s attorneys was for three years in prison or probation, as well as required treatment for alcoholism.
Judge David Herriford claimed to have received more than 70 letters, including from Lanez’s celebrity acquaintances, during a drawn-out sentence session that started on Monday.
Iggy Azalea, a musician, was one who demanded a sentence that was “transformational, not life-destroying,” according to him.
Another came from the little kid of Lanez.
However, the judge mandated that Lanez, who has been incarcerated since his conviction, serve ten years in prison.
He claimed that although the prosecution had established the use of a weapon and the victim’s vulnerability as aggravating elements, they had not established that the offense entailed a particularly high level of cruelty, viciousness, or callousness.
After a party at Kylie Jenner’s opulent home in July 2020, Megan Thee Stallion—real name Megan Pete—had been in a car with Lanez, his bodyguard, and her friend Kelsey Harris.
In the months prior to the incident, she and Lanez, whose true name is Daystar Peterson, had grown close.
According to the witness who testified in court, Megan Thee Stallion demanded to be allowed out of the car after an altercation broke out in the car between Lanez and Harris, who had only learnt of their sexual relationship that evening.
The rapper from the song “Savage” claimed she witnessed Lanez hold a gun at her and start shooting “after he yelled, Dance, bitch.”
During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion expressed to the judge her belief that, as a result of the shooting, she had “become some kind of villain,” with the male-dominated rap scene frequently appearing to be against her.
She claimed to have not enjoyed “a single day of tranquility” since she was shot in July 2020 in a statement read out in court on Monday.
