Sterling HoldCo Moves Ahead ln Recapitalisation.

……Cements capital raise with full regulatory approval.

    Emmanuel lkpeama

Sterling Financial Holdings Company PLC has achieved another
milestone with the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recognising an additional ₦75 billion in its capital raise.

This approval represents the final leg of the capital injection that was achieved through a private placement in September 2024.

Building on the private placement’s success, Sterling launched a Rights Issue in October 2024, structured to provide existing shareholders the exclusive opportunity to deepen their stakes in the company and share in its growth story.

The Rights Issue received significant interest and participation, highlighting the confidence and trust the company has cultivated among its shareholders over the years.

Regulatory approval for the process is currently underway, marking another significant step in the recapitalisation journey.

The public is eagerly awaiting Sterling’s Public Offer, which will present an exciting opportunity for individuals to invest in the company. It is anticipated that the recapitalisation process will be completed with a Public Offer early next year, allowing wider participation from the public and further strengthening its commitment to shared value creation.

Group Chief Executive, Yemi Odubiyi described the capital injection and the approvalas a validation of the company’s strategic direction and operational excellence.

“This milestone reflects the confidence of regulators and stakeholders in our vision to redefine financial services in Nigeria and beyond.”

“Our enhanced capital base empowers us to pursue transformative opportunities, deliver sustainable value to all stakeholders and drive impact across critical sectors of the Nigerian economy,” he stated.

Odubiyi emphasised the company’s evolution from its origins as a merchant bank to its current status as a diversified financial holdings company. Powered by cutting-edge technology and a flexible operational model, the company has consistently demonstrated its ability to navigate market difficulties and seize growth opportunities.

Reflecting on Sterling’s accomplishments,Odubiyi acknowledged the instrumental role of stakeholders, including regulators, investors, and customers.

“We are grateful for the unwavering support and trust in our strategy, which has been pivotal to our journey. This recapitalisation strengthens our ability to unlock new opportunities, create value, and drive economic growth,” he added.

The capital boost follows a year marked by robust financial performance and significant strategic achievements for Sterling. As at the last week in December 2024, Sterling witnessed a 19% surge in stock price, contributing to a remarkable three-year growth of 287.42%. In the first half of 2024, the company recorded a 51% increase in profit before tax compared to the same period in 2023 and achieved a 20% growth in total assets.

These results demonstrate Sterling’s resilience and ability to deliver superior outcomes despite the complexities of Nigeria’s economic landscape, marked by high inflation and currency volatility.

As Sterling looks ahead, its focus remains firmly on innovation, sustainability, and value
    creation.

With a fortified capital structure, the company is well-positioned to execute its
ambitious growth plans, deepen its impact across critical sectors, and set new benchmarks for excellence in Nigeria’s financial services industry. This latest milestone marks a transformative chapter for Sterling Financial Holdings Company PLC as it continues to redefine the future of financial services in Nigeria and beyond.

  • Another Tragedy As Jigawa Governor Loose Son In Auto Crash.

Another Tragedy As Jigawa Governor Loose Son In Auto Crash.

    Felicia Asuquo, Abuja

Tragedy has once again struck the family of Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, following the death of his eldest son, Abdulwahab Umar Namadi, in a fatal car accident.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the governor lost his mother, Hajiya Maryam Namadi.

According to eyewitness report Abdulwahab was returning from Kafin Hausa to Dutse with his friends when the vehicle he was driving lost control, causing it to somersault.

While his friends sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Dutse General Hospital, Abdulwahab was pronounced dead at the scene.

A close family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as a “double tragedy that has deeply shaken the family.”

“The governor is still mourning the loss of his mother, and now this. It is a very difficult time for the family,” the source said

Governor Namadi, who was seen at the funeral in Kafin Hausa, expressed his grief but called for prayers and patience.

“It is Allah’s will, and we cannot question it. I urge everyone to remember us in their prayers during this challenging period,” the governor said during a brief address after the burial.

Residents of Dutse and Kafin Hausa have been trooping to the governor’s residence to offer their condolences.

Funeral prayers for the late Abdulwahab were held at the Kafin Hausa Central Mosque, attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and community leaders.

Meanwhile, hospital officials have confirmed that Abdulwahab’s friends are responding to treatment and remain in stable condition.

  • Okija Stampede As A Preventable Tragedy.

Okija Stampede As A Preventable Tragedy.

    By Christian ABURIME

The recent stampede in Okija, Anambra State, where about 22 people as confirmed by the police, including the elderly, pregnant women, children and nursing mothers, tragically lost their lives while scrambling for relief materials to celebrate Christmas, painfully reminds us of the dangers of unchecked crowds and the urgent need for better planning of public philanthropic events.

This heartbreaking incident, following similar recent tragedies in Ibadan and Abuja, also reflects the critical importance of prioritising safety and human life in all our endeavours, especially when dealing with vulnerable populations.

It is understandable that Nigerians are hard pressed by the prevailing economic exigencies in the country. But the Okija stampede, triggered by the well-intentioned efforts of the Obi Jackson Foundation to distribute rice, oil, and more to the less privileged, highlights the inherent risks associated with large gatherings, particularly when resources are perceived to be scarce.

The desperation and anxiety that the palliatives may not go round often accompany such events, thus escalating into a chaotic situation, leading to tragic consequences.

Stampedes, by their very nature, are unpredictable and can quickly overwhelm even the most well-meaning organisers.

The sheer force of a moving crowd can cause severe injuries, crush victims, and cut off oxygen supply, leading to suffocation and even death. In the Okija incident, the lack of crowd control measures, coupled with the overwhelming number of people struggling for palliatives, appears to have contributed significantly to the tragic outcome.

It is imperative that we learn from this incident and take proactive steps to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

First and foremost, prioritising safety cannot be overstated. Organisers of public palliatives-sharing programmes must always prioritise the safety and well-being of beneficiaries above all else so that their noble intentions don’t turn into regrettable mistakes that will haunt them or even lead to legal consequences. Safety protocols include conducting thorough risk assessments, implementing robust crowd control measures, and ensuring adequate medical personnel are on standby.

Naturally, decentralised distribution of relief materials through multiple, smaller distribution points can also significantly reduce overcrowding and mitigate the risk of stampedes. Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and people with disabilities.

These individuals should be prioritised and provided with designated areas and assistance, different from the general crowd. And of course, public awareness campaigns should be conducted to educate the public ahead about the importance of orderly conduct during such events.

It is reassuring that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has responded empathetically and taken a crucial step through the initiation of an investigation into the Okija incident. The government will also be taking proactive measures to prevent future occurrences. This may include issuing clear guidelines for the distribution of relief materials, providing training on crowd control and emergency response, and working closely with local communities and civil society organisations to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

In all, Ndi Anambra are urged to exercise caution and prioritise their safety during this festive season and at any public event involving either the distribution of relief materials, funfair or parties.

Let us be mindful of our surroundings, avoid pushing and shoving, and follow the instructions of designated personnel. Let us learn from the Okija tragedy to create a safer and more orderly society for all. Remember, only the living can celebrate. Merry Christmas.

  • Lagos Speaker, Rt Hon Obasa Debunks Allegation Of Spending N17b On House Of Assembly Gate.

Lagos Speaker, Rt Hon Obasa Debunks Allegation Of Spending N17b On House Of Assembly Gate.

    Emmanuel lkpeama

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on Thursday described the allegation that the House spent N17 billion on the fixing of a gate as spurious and funny.

Investigator news gathered that a self-proclaimed group, Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, had accused the Assembly of spending the amount to construct a gate. The group also sought investigation of the claim.

Speaking at plenary, Dr. Obasa said the allegation stemmed from the fear of some people over 2027 which is still more than two years away.

Rt Hon Obasa went further to debunk the claim that the House spent N200 million on its recently organised 22nd thanksgiving service for staff.

“It is so funny. How much is the allocation of the Assembly in the whole year that we will decide to spend N17 billion on a gate? They even claimed that we expended 200 million on thanksgiving that did not hold.

“We are aware that at a period like this when we are approaching elections in 2027, we should expect such things. I think some people are scared and I don’t know why.

“This House did not and has not embarked on any such project. We are not that reckless. We had our thanksgiving last Friday and dignitaries from various parts of the State attended it,” the Speaker said.

Addressing further claims by the group about the alleged relationship between him and the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, the Speaker denied attending the latter’s screening and confirmation by the National Assembly.

“They said that I was at the National Assembly when they were confirming the EFCC chairman. I want to believe that there are CCTV cameras at the National Assembly to identify those who attended the event. The press must have written about it too. So the group should do more to confirm if I was there.

“This is just to deny the allegations in the interest of the public and not the writers because the writers are not those we should be joining words with,” the Speaker said.

Earlier, the House, through its spokesperson, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, had addressed the allegations noting that the Assembly bases its activities on integrity, transparency and accountability.

“It is ludicrous the claim about constituency intervention funds and constituency project funds and their handling by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko as claimed by the group.

“One would have expected a self-acclaimed anti-corruption crusading group to do its groundwork before jumping across the fence with conviction that it hit a jackpot to malign an institution of repute in the name of politics.

“Simply put, the Lagos State House of Assembly does not have any such funds. The Assembly does not embark on constituency projects. Instead, once every year, the House holds stakeholders’ meetings simultaneously across the state where constituents have the opportunity to tell the lawmakers their expectations and make requests for the betterment of the state.

“These requests and expectations are compiled and sent to the executive arm of government for consideration as inputs in subsequent budgets. If this is what the group takes as constituency intervention or project funds, we are sure this explanation has given the required education, moreover, it is common knowledge that it is the responsibility of the Executive arm to execute such projects,” the earlier statement by Ogundipe read.
