    Ondo church attack: NANS sends message to Buhari, Akeredolu

    The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly denounced the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owa-luwa Street, Owo town, Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, and the barbaric massacre of numerous parishioners there.

    In a statement, the students’ group urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government and the Ondo State Government, led by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, to address the escalating insecurity in Owo town and guarantee that those responsible for the “massacre” are brought to justice.

    In a statement, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, Executive Director, Campus Intervention, NANS National Secretariat, denounced how gunmen attacked the church on Sunday during its Pentecost Sunday liturgy and shot several people to death.

    “It is with great sadness that we report that while the Holy Mass was in progress, unknown gunmen attacked and opened fire on members of the church, killing several and injuring dozens more.” This is heartbreaking. Uthman described the situation as “inhumane, sarcastic, diabolical, and pitiful.”

    He expressed concern because Owo Local Government Area is home to one of the state-owned tertiary institutions, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, and asked security forces to guarantee that the attackers do not get away with it.

    “Waking up to such heartbreaking news as this is an unanticipated development is terrible and cruel.” The culprits of the Owo atrocity must be held accountable.

    “The student body’s leadership condemns this satanic action in its entirety, since this regrettable episode is highly condemnable and constitutes a severe threat to our collective survival as a people.”

    “Since a matter of urgency, the chiefs of security agencies should deploy their personnel to the community to monitor and restore normality, as the lives of our students studying in Owo town are very important to us as a leadership.”

    “We urge all Nigerian students in Florida to be law-abiding, alert, and not to take the law into their own hands.”

    “NANS also expresses condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic incident and provides relief to the injured,” he said.

    Gunmen open fire on a church in southwest Nigeria, killing 52 worshipers

    Gunmen opened fire on a Catholic church in Owo, Nigeria’s South West Ondo state, on Sunday morning, killing more than 52 people and injured many more.

    The attackers are said to have assaulted St. Francis Catholic Church with homemade explosives, then entered the church and began shooting at people during the service due to the chaos.
    At least 52 bodies were taken from the church to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, as well as other injured worshippers.

    Locals criticized the attack as a video of the incident and the casualties inside the church went viral on social media.

    The attackers were claimed to have fled the site as soon as the horrific act was carried out.

    Boko Haram terrorists were known for attacking and killing worshippers in churches, but no such occurrence has been recorded since 2015.

    The incident at Owo on June 6 is the first of its kind in South West Nigeria, which had previously been quite tranquil.

    Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo state, confirmed the tragedy and expressed his sincere sorrow over the unjustified attack and killing of innocent persons.

    “The heinous and demonic act is a premeditated strike against the Owo kingdom’s peace-loving people, who have enjoyed relative peace throughout the years.

    Sunday was a bleak day.
    “In Owo, it’s a dreary Sunday. Our hearts are laden with sorrow. The enemies of the people have targeted our calm and tranquility. This is a personal tragedy, as well as an attack on our beloved state.”

    He claimed to have talked with Most Reverend Jude Arogundade, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, who was on his way to Owo.

    “Similarly, I had to cancel my party’s national assignment in Abuja in order to get to Owo right away.

    “This is a surprising turn of events. To say the least, I’m stunned. Nonetheless, we will devote every possible resource to tracking down and punishing these perpetrators.

    “In our determination to cleanse our state of criminals, we will never yield to the schemes of callous individuals,” he stated.

    He encouraged Owo residents to be calm and watchful.

    “Take care not to take the law into your own hands. I’ve met with the chiefs of the security services. “I’ve also been promised that security officers would be dispatched to monitor and restore normalcy to the kingdom of Owo,” he said.

    Obiora is said to have gone missing during the election, and no one has seen or heard from him since. His mother, Ada Agbasimalo, has appealed to the government and security authorities for assistance in locating her son.

    Obiora was one of the candidates in the governorship election, which was won by Prof. Chukwuemeka Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

    Mrs. Agbasimalo has also sent an open letter to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, requesting his assistance in hastening her son Obiora’s release.

    The LP candidate was kidnapped on September 18th, 2021 at Lilu in Ihiala Local Government Area, LGA on their way to Azia, also in Ihiala Local Government 4GA, according to a letter signed by his mother.

    “As his mother, I have been traumatised and agonised to the extent that I now have major heart troubles,” said the mother of the missing lawmaker, who is appealing to Anambra South Senator Andy Uba for assistance in securing her son’s release.

    HURIWA, through its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, spoke to the press about the situation and urged Obi to act.

    According to Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), 1,239 suspected criminals have been apprehended since January 2022.

    The IGP also revealed that the Force has implemented new measures to protect motorists along the Abuja-Kaduna highway and to halt criminal activities in the country’s south-east.

    He made the announcement during a meeting with strategic police managers in Abuja on Thursday, revealing that the Force has received approval from the National Communications Commission (NCC) for the allocation of a national Police Short Code ‘933’ for free emergency calls and information sharing between the police and citizens. It’ll be unveiled in public for the first time.

    “Between January 2022 and today, the Nigeria Police has arrested a total of 328 Terrorists/Bandits, 325 Armed Robbery suspects, 339 kidnapping offenders, and 247 suspected cultists,” the IGP said.

    “We have also safely rescued 307 kidnapped victims and recovered 510 firearms of various descriptions and 8,906 ammunition of various descriptions and calibres, including rocket-propelled grenades and other Improvised Explosive Devices, during this time period.”

    He did say, however, that the achievements would not have been possible “without the loyalty, sacrifice, courage, and purposeful leadership of all of you gathered here.”

    As a result, the IGP praised the men and officers of the Force for their “restored sense of duty and patriotism.”

    “However, I urge you to continue on your upward trajectory.” Because as the national political landscape becomes more active, new threats to our internal security will emerge, posing new challenges for you as strategic police commanders.

    “I am confident that you will continue to use your vast experience to assist the nation in deepening our democratic values as we confront these looming threats.”

    The IGP, on the other hand, reassured Nigerians that the Force management team would “employ appropriate frameworks that will engender a fair, peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process in both the Ekiti and Osun States gubernatorial elections, as well as during the upcoming 2023 general elections” as “the lead agency in the election security process.”

    IGP Alkali said the Force is currently working to improve the capacity of its officers in election security management in preparation for the 2023 general elections.

    “I wish to use this opportunity to re-assure Nigerians that the Nigeria Police are working effectively with the Military, Department of State Services, the Ministry of Transport, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation toward evolving a resilient security architecture that will address current threats on a long-term basis,” the IGP said of the new measures put in place to protect travellers on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

    “In the meantime, we’ve deployed our air assets for aerial surveillance to support the ground police teams, in addition to upscaling our patrol operations along the highway.”

    “In addition, we have re-energized ‘Operation Safer Highway’ with the injection of more patrol vehicles and personnel across the country,” he said, speaking about the security situation in the South East.

    “We’ve also bolstered ‘Operation Restore Peace,’ the Special Anti-Secessionist Operation in the South East, by deploying more special operational units and Force assets.”

    Gunmen with machetes and guns allegedly raided a Fulani camp in Ndiukwuenu Community, killing four people and carting away 60 cattle.

    The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders As­sociation of Nigeria issued a statement lamenting the state’s constant attacks by herdsmen camps.
    Alhaji Gidado Soddiki, the Zonal Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, said the gunmen struck at 7:00 p.m. on May 30, 2022.

I had no idea what had happened to one of the new tenants because there were flies everywhere.”

    “I last saw them on Tuesday,” another female tenant in the same building said. Because the pumping machine had failed, I saw the man fetching water late that night.

    “We didn’t see any of them throughout Wednesday.” And because they had just moved in, we had no suspicions. His car was parked inside the compound, and their break-in was hidden from view from the street.

    “That Wednesday, the owner of the supermarket downstairs complained that a parked car was obstructing customers’ access to their store.” I dialled his phone number, which rang but was not answered. When the entire place started to smell, we suspected it was fishing.”

    When the Olorungbon’s door was forced open, the pregnant woman was discovered naked near the door, apparently attempting to crawl outside to cry for help before dying.

    The late businessman also had an altercation with a commercial motorcyclist on Tuesday evening, according to reports. The latter is said to have collided with the former’s parked vehicle outside the building.

    According to reports, the deceased insisted on receiving N10,000 from the motorcyclist in order to repair the damage to his car. The okada rider allegedly handed him the money angrily while cursing under his breath, according to eyewitnesses.
