    Breaking: Gunmen in Anambra attack broadcast station, set fire to vehicles, building

    Unidentified gunmen broke into the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Awada, Onitsha station in the early hours of Monday.

    A building, a company bus, and another vehicle parked on the premises belonging to a staff member who had worked overnight were set on fire by gunmen suspected of being part of those terrorising the State for over a year.

    According to reports, no one was killed in the attack, but the gunmen brutalised the employees they encountered on the premises, injuring them.

    As of the time of writing, a member of staff who requested anonymity said they were being questioned by security agents about the attack.

    He promised to give a detailed account of the gunmen’s attack on them, as he had worked all night and witnessed it.

    Anambra Broadcasting Service, a state-owned corporation, has been assisting the state government in its fight against rogue gunmen.

    Okorocha pleads not guilty to N2.9bn fraud charge

    Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State, has been charged with fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a federal high court in Abuja.

    Anyim Chinenye, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and five companies — Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited — were all charged alongside Okorocha.

    The defendants appeared in court at 9:35 a.m. and pleaded not guilty to a 17-count money laundering charge.

    “I understand the charge levelled against me,” Okorocha said, “but I am not guilty, My Lord.”
    Okorocha, who currently serves as the senator for Imo West, has declared his intention to run for president in 2023.

    Last Tuesday, EFCC agents apprehended him.

    The former governor was apprehended after allegedly refusing to appear in court.

    He is accused by the EFCC of attempting to avoid service of the charge on purpose.

    Following the defendants’ pleas, Okorocha’s lawyer, Okey Amaechi, petitioned the court for his client’s release on bail pending the outcome of the case.

    He drew the court’s attention to the fact that his client had been detained without cause prior to the APC’s presidential primary.

    “They went into the defendant’s house, broke into it, and arrested him in a gestapo manner,” he said, without a warrant of arrest from this court.

    However, EFCC counsel Gbolahan Latona told the court that Okorocha raised some issues in his bail application to which he intends to respond.

    The defendants’ bail applications will be heard by Judge Inyang Ekwo on Tuesday.

    He also ordered that they be held in EFCC custody until their bail request is decided.

    Trial dates have been set for November 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11.

    Breaking: EFCC arraigns Okorocha over alleged N2.9bn fraud

    Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of Imo state, was brought to the Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja on Monday morning for arraignment on fraud charges.

    The EFCC had filed a 17-count charge against the former governor of Imo before a federal high court in Abuja on January 31, according to reports.

    As of 9 a.m., the courtroom was already half-full, with several more people waiting for the proceedings to begin.

    Okorocha, a presidential candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, was arrested last Tuesday after EFCC agents broke into his Abuja home after a seven-hour siege.

    The politician will be arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo, who currently represents the Imo West senatorial district in the National Assembly.

    Nigerians should seek professional help for their personal problems, as most religious institutions are not equipped or trained to deal with mental health issues.

    Nasarawa: Gunmen kill ex-gov aspirant’s agent, abduct two daughters

    Zakari Umaru-Kigbu, a former commissioner of the Nasarawa State National Population Commission, was killed by gunmen who stormed his home in Azuba Bashayi, Lafia Local Government Area on Saturday night.

    According to reports, gunmen killed Umaru-Kigbu, 60, and abducted his two daughters at about 11:40 p.m. on Saturday.

    According to a source, Umaru-Kigbu, a lecturer at the state-owned Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic in Lafia, acted as an agent for former Minister of Information Labaran Maku in the Peoples Democratic Party’s Nasarawa state governorship primary election.

    Maku, on the other hand, had dropped out of the governorship primary election just hours before it started.
    “Mr. Umaru-Kigbu was a man who believed in peace. In this state, he has had the honour of holding a number of positions. We don’t know who he may have offended, and we don’t know why he died so soon. Everyone knows he avoids conflict, so we’re shocked to hear such bad news,” the source continued.

    ASP Ramhan Nansel, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Sunday, saying that officers from the command had been dispatched to the scene of the attack to restore normalcy, secure the release of Umaru-two Kigbu’s daughters, and apprehend the kidnappers.
    “On Saturday night, the Police Command received a distress call about the tragic incident that occurred at Azuba Bashayi, Lafia North Development Area in the Lafia Local Government Area,” Nansel said.

    “We immediately dispatched our command patrol teams, as well as military personnel, to the scene of the incident to assist the Nigeria Police Force in rescuing his two daughters and apprehending the perpetrators of the act.”

    “Umaru-Kigbu was rushed to the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia, but he died there due to his bullet wound.”

    He and Rt. Rev. Dennis Mark, the Methodist Bishop of Owerri and the Prelate’s Chaplain, were kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

    The clergymen were kidnapped in the afternoon, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while on their way home from a programme in the council area.

    “It’s a pity.” Efforts to save him and the other priests with him are at a fever pitch.

    To avenge the deaths of two colleagues, over 100 motorcyclists attacked Same Global Estate in Abuja’s Lokogoma area.

    On Sunday, a motorist is said to have hit two Okada riders and fled into the estate for safety.

    The Okada riders allegedly set fire to two of the estate’s buildings.

    The motorcyclists attacked the estate, residents told our correspondent, in an attempt to apprehend an unknown motorist.
    The motorist was pursued by a large group of motorcyclists after he overtook two of them, according to the witnesses.

    Security operatives had arrived on the estate, according to reports, to prevent further property damage.

    “Over 100 Hausa bike riders attacked our estate some hours ago,” said the estate manager, Mr. Adebisi Adelowo, who spoke. They set fire to two buildings in an attempt to burn down the estate. They tore down our gate and began throwing stones at people’s homes. We weren’t able to stop them until the police and the army arrived.

    “We later found out that they attacked our estate because two of their colleagues were killed by a motorist who fled to our estate for safety after being chased by large stones and other dangerous weapons.

    Ogun: group calls for a probe into the murder of Wale Matasacker

    Akinwale Sorunke, a popular area boy killed by suspected cultists on Sunday, was not a member of the Aiye confraternity, according to a group, who described his death as more or less a political assassination.

    Some suspected cultists killed Sorunke, also known as Wale Matasacker, on Quarry Road in Abeokuta.

    The young man was said to be a member of the Aiye cult, and he was killed by members of the rival Eiye cult.

    But, according to the defamatory Noe Black Movement (NBM) of Africa, Abeokuta zone, Sorunke was a cultist.

    Sorunke, a member of the NBM, was “a staunch supporter of Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Executive Governor of Ogun State,” according to a statement signed by the group’s president, Kayode Odunewu.

    While expressing condolences to Sorunke Akinwale’s immediate family and loved ones, the Matasacker Children’s Foundation noted that the deceased was “a dedicated member of the APC Youth League and working with the SA to the Governor on Youth and Sports, contrary to some mischievous reports tagging the late Sorunke Akinwale as a cultist.”

    The group demanded that security agencies look into the circumstances surrounding Sorunke’s death, which it described as “apparently a political assassination.”

    The NBM urged the Ogun State government and security forces to do more to prevent killings in the state, as well as advising youths to avoid cultism and other social vices.

    “Investigate some top ranking people in government and political aspirants financing perpetrators of this unrest for political gain and interest,” NBM said.

    “Finally, the NBM Of Africa, Abeokuta Zone distances itself from all unrest in the state capital, as our members are law-abiding, responsible, and peaceful citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who have demonstrated positive impacts on humanity.”

    Part of Odunewu’s statement read, “We are also preaching free, fair, and credible elections in 2023 and completely frown at killing people for political gain.”

    Four people have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for extorting money from motorists in the state while posing as officials of the now-defunct Lagos State Committee on the Removal of Abandoned Vehicles.

    According to a statement issued Friday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were apprehended by Rapid Response Squad Operatives.

    Taiwo Falodun, aka Biggy (48), Adedire Olaniyi (42), Femi Osunkoya (53) and Olalekan Edu are the suspects who have been arrested (51).

    Adedire and Osunkoya, two of the suspects, were apprehended yesterday after impounding a motorist’s vehicle for changing lanes at Alausa, according to Hundeyin.
    “The motorist stated that the suspects took her vehicle to a parking lot in front of Elephant Cement House, where she was asked to pay a fine of N50,000,” the statement read. Her friends, on the other hand, contacted the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

    “The RRS responded quickly, arrested the suspects, and began preliminary investigations.” During the investigation, their leader, Taiwo Falodun, arrived with a government official, Olalekan Edu, to request the release of the arrested suspects.     The kidnappers stormed a construction site in Ogbonmo, Ijebu-Owo, at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a source. The expatriate, who is reportedly a contractor at the construction site, was kidnapped.

    The kidnappers followed the Lebanese contractor to the construction site, where they shot the Soldier and the driver before whisking their victim away to an unknown destination, according to a source who is also a worker at the site.

    “The white engineer, as we call him, has been kidnapped. His driver and security guard were both killed. The gunmen arrived at the site around 5 p.m. on Wednesday and fired numerous shots into the air.

    “When we heard gunshots, we all fled the scene.” Those who arrived were six or seven years old and wore masks.

    “It wasn’t until some of us returned to the site after more than two hours that we saw the soldier and the driver’s bodies.”

    “There was no sign of the White engineer. The police were later summoned, and they transported the bodies to the town’s hospital,” the source said.
