    Beaking: Finance Minister suspends Accountant General over N80bn money laundering scandal

    The Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has been suspended by Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning.

    The suspension was announced in a letter from the minister dated May 18, 2022, which stated that it was necessary to “provide for proper and unfettered investigation into the severe allegations in accordance with Public Service Rules 030406.”

    Mr Idris is not “expected to attend to your place of work or contact any official in your Office except for any disciplinary hearing that may be suggested,” according to the ministry, during his unpaid suspension term.

    The suspension is the most recent development in the N80 billion controversy involving the Accountant General, who was arrested on Monday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    “Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arrested serving Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, on Monday, May 16, 2022, in connection with diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80 billion (Eighty Billion Naira only),” according to a statement released by the agency’s spokesman, Uwujaren.

    “The AGF raked in the monies using proxies, family members, and close acquaintances, according to the Commission’s verified intelligence.”

    He claimed the money was laundered through Kano and Abuja real estate investments. Idris was arrested, according to him, after he failed to respond to the commission’s invitations to comment on the fraudulent act.

    Ebonyi APC condemns the murder of security guard, three brothers of Council boss

    Stanley Okoro Emegha, the state chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, in Ebonyi, has condemned the gruesome murder of a security guard and three brothers of Ikwo LGA council chairman, Stephen Orogwu.

    Okoro issued the statement in Abakaliki, which he signed and made available to journalists.

    He described the killings as “most barbaric and unfortunate,” noting that the Chairman’s house was burned at a time when Ebonyi was being celebrated as the country’s most peaceful and economically vibrant state.

    He expressed regret that the perpetrators of the heinous act do not reflect well on the state, nor do they represent the people’s paragons or ideals.

    “I am deeply saddened that these unscrupulous elements could strike in this manner,” he said, “but they should rest assured that a security searchlight has been beamed on them, and they will be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law in the shortest time possible.”

    “I want to emphasise that the state is not a safe haven for criminals. Security personnel will not and will never allow some of them who engage in guerrilla warfare to threaten the state’s existing peace.”

    On Wednesday, gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, allegedly enforced a sit-at-home order in Ugbolu community, near Asaba, Delta State.

    It was reported that the secessionist group had called for a sit-in in all parts of the southeast on May 18 as its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, returned to court.

    According to Vanguard, gunmen on the loose in the southeast and parts of Delta set fire to two Dangote trucks, one keke, and damaged an Audi car.

    According to reports, suspected IPOB members blocked the Ugbolu/Illah Road at Mile 5 and began shooting at random. According to the Vanguard, one person is believed to have died in the shooting.

    Terungwa Stephanie, a 26-year-old National Youth Service Corps member, was allegedly died after being exposed to a corrosive material, according to the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Sunday Babaji.

    On Monday in Abuja, the commissioner revealed this while arraigning three suspects in connection with her death before the FCT Police Command.

    Jenifer Tsembe ‘f’, 26, Monday Simon (a.k.a. Black)’m’, 36, and Solomon Abu’m’, 35 are the suspects.

    The accused planned to kidnap the victim so Jennifer could have her alleged lover, Edward Achadu, all to herself, according to Babaji.
    “Our research indicated that the suspects criminally conspired and murdered the victim in order for Jennifer Tsembe, one of the suspects and Edward Achadu’s estranged lover, to have him all to herself, especially for monetary gains,” he stated.

    Tsembe stated that she simply planned to kidnap Jennifer and seek a ransom from Achadu, not to murder her.

    She also said that Solomon, one of the other male suspects, was the one who planned the kidnapping.
    The other suspects, on the other hand, admitted that Tsembe, who is friends with the dead, devised the plan for the deceased to visit her residence and solicit their assistance in tying her up when she arrived. Tsembe allegedly directed them to leave the suspect, deceased, and her child behind once they had completed their role.

    Tsembe had contacted Simon after he had left, saying she needed help with the body since the deceased had died. Black, on the other hand, said that by the time he arrived to the scene, the suspect had already showered her in acid.

    Following that, the Police Commissioner stated that the Command has stepped up its investigation in order to uncover data that could lead to the arrest of any other fugitive participants in the illegal act.

    Mr. Peter Obi, a presidential aspirant from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Anambra State, has given a bleak image of Nigeria’s position, warning that the country is on the verge of collapse, but insisting that if elected, he has what it takes to turn things around.

    Obi, who spoke to Anambra delegates and other stakeholders in Awka as part of his ongoing engagements across the country ahead of the PDP presidential primary, expressed disappointment that Nigerians had prioritised sharing over production.

    “Despite her great economic potentials, JP Morgan, an international organisation, has concluded that Nigeria is no longer an investment destination,” he remarked. Nigeria is on its way down, and my job is to keep the delegates toasty while they make their primary choices.

    “I am dedicated to this cause, and I am confident that I have what it takes to turn the country around.”

    I’ve travelled throughout the country and discovered that the people are in excruciating pain. If I am elected president, we will place a greater emphasis on the production formula rather than the current sharing formula. We do nothing but share in this country, with little emphasis on manufacturing.

    “I am optimistic that the country can be fixed, but it will take someone like me to do so.” No one is better equipped and qualified than me among all those hoping to run for office in both parties.”

    He reminded the stakeholders that Anambra is a PDP state, and that the state must take its proper place within the party, notwithstanding the state branch’s current issues.

    He also urged the delegates to welcome all of the candidates who are going to campaign in the state, saying that they are all out shopping and that he has no enemies.

    Also speaking at the event, Chief Doyin Okupe, the director general of his campaign group, said it would be sheer wickedness to deny Igbos the presidency in 2023, noting that Nigeria would be fortunate to have Peter Obi as president.

    Many prominent Yoruba people, he claims, share his viewpoint and are working hard to ensure that an Igbo man becomes the next president.

    “Those parading themselves in Yoruba country should understand the notion of equity,” he continued. I recall that in what was deemed Nigeria’s most free election, the Igbo people overwhelmingly voted for MKO Abiola.

    “Although I am very competent, I am unable to run since I am aware that it is Igbo’s turn and that Peter Obi is better equipped to fill the position.”

    “Among those arriving from the East, Peter is the best, and he is superior to all others vying to be president.”

    “This man has travelled the globe in search of knowledge, and he is the most qualified person to govern this country.”

    Following the meeting, the Anambra delegates voted a resolution urging other Igbo presidential candidates to withdraw in favour of Obi, so that the South East could go to the primaries as an unified front and show their best.

    Chuba Oranusi, a former member of the State House of Assembly, proposed the motion.

    Seven hooded gunmen stood guard in Amansea, a border town between Anambra and Enugu States, on Monday to ensure that the Monday sit-at-home order was followed.

    Mr Ekene, who drove his sick mother from Oji River to Awka for a doctor’s appointment, told this reporter that seeing his mother laying in the back seat saved his life.

    Meanwhile, police operatives shot and killed two people who were allegedly ensuring compliance with the Monday sit-in.

    “Operatives on crime prevention patrol in the early hours of today 16/5/2022 along Umunze, road, Orumba South LGA, engaged arm-bearing gunmen purportedly enforcing sit-at-home in Anambra State,” the Anambra State Command said through its spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga.

    “Two of the criminals were eliminated, and a white Toyota Hiace Bus with no registration number was recovered.”

    Ikenga went on to say that the criminals were hindering the flow of innocent road users who were going about their daily business when they were approached by the operatives.

    “The hoodlums seize motorbikes and tricycles, chase the passengers away, and then light the motorcycle or trike on fire.”

    DSP Ikenga Tochukwu stated, “The Command operatives have intensified patrol within the state and the situation is being watched.”

    Gunmen kill one, kidnap eight-year-old boy in Jigawa

    In Tarabu village, Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State, unidentified gunmen killed a 45-year-old man Gambo Alhassan Maigini and kidnapped an eight-year-old boy, Khalifa Alhaji T Daguri.

    The gunmen broke into Daguro’s residence on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., abducting his 36-year-old wife and his eight-year-old kid, Kalifa, according to a family source.

    According to him, the hoodlums in their midst exchanged fire with security personnel for at least 40 minutes before being outmanned.

    The incident was confirmed by police spokeswoman ASP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
    “Teams of policemen from Area Command Hadejia, Hadejia ‘A’ and ‘B’ Divisions were deployed to the area, and the hoodlums engaged them in a gun duel upon sighting them,” he said.

    According to him, one Sadiya Alh T Mohd was rescued unharmed, while Kalifa was kidnapped.

    Shiisu added that following the firefight, authorities were able to apprehend their driver, Malam Adamu of Lawandi Marma village.

    According to him, the hoodlums also killed Gambo Alhassan Magini.

    Popular Nollywood actor, Leo Mezie, has died at 46. Born Leonard Chimezie Onyemachi, it was gathered that he died on Saturday while recovering from a kidney transplant.

    The death of the actor was announced on Monday by his colleague, Chioma Toplis via her Instagram account. Toplis revealed that the thespian died in a hospital in a hospital in Abuja.

    Sharing some pictures of Leo Mezie, Toplis via the caption section wrote, “Actor Leo Mezie is dead. He died on Saturday in Abuja while recovering from a kidney transplant. His corpse has been moved to Umuahia his hometown. RIP Leo.”
    Leo Mezie began his career in the Nigerian film industry in 1996, however, he shot into prominence in 2003, when he starred in the movie, Labista.

    In 2010, the actor married his sweetheart, Maureen. The actor, in 2016 the actor voiced out to his friends and fans that he had a kidney problem and they rallied around him, hence, he went for surgery in London.

    In the early hours of Monday, unidentified arsonists set fire to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company’s Ogidi District office.

    According to reports, the event resulted in the burning of around 32 utility and operational cars.

    According to the Punch, the perpetrators stormed the EEDC headquarters shortly after committing a similar act at the Idemili Secretariat, where a Magistrates’ Court was also set ablaze.

    Mr. Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at the EEDC, confirmed the occurrence and expressed disappointment that attempts to contact the Anambra State Fire Service had failed.

    As they watched the office building and other assets burn, Ezeh said members of staff on the ground felt helpless.

    “It took the involvement of the Commissioner for Utilities, Mr. Julius Chukwuemeka, at approximately 9.05 a.m. today to get the Fire Service team down to the location of the event,” he said.

    “This is a significant setback for EEDC’s efforts to develop its network and improve the quality of service it provides to its consumers in Ogidi and Anambra State as a whole.”

    “We’ve already alerted the appropriate authorities to this development, and it’s expected that a thorough investigation will be conducted and the perpetrators of this heinous crime prosecuted.”
