    Justice Prevails: AGF Discontinues Criminal Case Against Fidelity Bank MD,Onyeali-Ikpe,Cites Lack Of Evidence.

    The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has clarified the discontinuation of a criminal charge against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director and CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc.

    In a release signed by the Special Assistant to the President on Communication, Publicity, Office of the AGF and Minister of Justice Kamarudeen Ogundele,on June 09,2025,he stated that the decision to discontinue the charge was made after a careful review of the case, which revealed that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank when the account in question was opened.

     

    Ogunlende noted that the decision by the Attorney General is guided by the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, ensuring that the legal process is allowed to run its course without interference or speculation.

    He said that the decision followed a careful review of the case which did not connect Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe to the charge as she was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director of the Fidelity Bank when the account used in the alleged scheme of fraud was opened.

    “The Attorney General’s decision to discontinue the criminal charge against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, MD/CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc, is a testament to the office’s commitment to upholding justice and fairness.”

     

    “As the chief law officer of the federation, the AGF has the constitutional power to enter a nolle prosequi, discontinuing a prosecution where it is deemed necessary to prevent a miscarriage of justice.”

    “This decision followed a careful review of the case which did not connect Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe to the charge as she was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director of the Fidelity Bank when the account used in the alleged scheme of fraud was opened.”

    “The Attorney General’s decision is guided by the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, and we have every confidence that this decision is in the best interest of justice and the public.”

    “This decision does not to exculpate Fidelity Bank from the allegations contained in the charge which is still pending before the court, but rather a demonstration of the Attorney General’s duty to ensure that justice is served.”he stated.

    He therefore urge the public to allow the legal process to run its course and to refrain from speculation or jumping to conclusions as the AGF will ensure that the best interest of Justice is served at all times and that all those found wanting, at any time, face the full weight of law to serve as a deterrent to others.

    The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has commemorated the International Day of Women Judges usually celebrated on 10th March of the year; recognizing the invaluable contributions of women judges around the world.

    In a release signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity,Mr Jonathan Eze, the Minister commended the courage and resilience of women in the judiciary, acknowledging their significant progress towards achieving gender equality and their invaluable contributions to the judicial institution.

    “As we celebrate the trailblazing women who have broken down barriers, defied stereotypes, and paved the way for future generations of women in the judiciary,”

    “I reaffirm my commitment to developing and implementing effective national strategies for advancing women in judicial justice systems and institutions at all levels.” the Minister said.

    The Minister went further to emphasize the importance of women’s representation in the judiciary, noting that it is key to ensuring that courts represent their citizens, address their concerns, and hand down sound judgments.

    “As we mark this day, let us continue to work together to create a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable judiciary that reflects the values of justice, equality, and human rights,” the Minister concluded.

    NBA Suspends Sitting For One Week Over Building Collapse ln Imo State

    The Nigeria Bar Association, Imo State chapter on Friday suspended sitting for one week at the Justice Orjiakor block of the Imo State High Court Complex New Owerri after Lawyers and staff experienced continuous vibration during Court sittings.

    The Chairman of NBA, Imo State chapter, Barr. Chris Ihentuge who stated this in Owerri, said, “this morning, we received report that the Justice Orjiakor block of the complex vibrated yesterday during sitting. We also received same report two days ago”.

    According to the Chairman, it was reported that while a judge was sitting yesterday, the building was vibrating, and made lawyers and litigants left the building for fear of being submerged.

    Ihentuge decried that few weeks ago when the Governor had a phone in program, he “complained about the state of the building, and the Governor confirmed the information having gotten the report and promised to do something about that immediately, but unfortunately nothing has been done”.

    “We call on the Governor to conduct integrity test on the building so that lawyers and litigants can do their work without fear of building collapse. The court is in a bad shape, no lights, no air conditioners. Who do we complain to since we don’t have a Chief Judge”.

    The Chairman in his address stated, “we cannot afford to risk our lives all in a bid to attend to our duties as lawyers and called for suspension of sittings in the said block for one week. Judges sitting at the said block were also accordingly informed”.

    He also seized the opportunity to lament the lack of appointment of the Chief Judge of the state for roughly three months now, despite several complaints to the state Governor.

    Investigator news reports that the Governor had assured that engineers will be deployed to ascertain the level of crack and make recommendation.

    He noted that the Chief Judge will be appointed when he receives recommendation from the NJC.

    President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former justice of the Supreme Court and Nigeria’s judiciary, on his passing.

    The President in a release signed by his Special Adviser on lnformation and Strategy,Bayo Onanuga,conveys his sympathies to members of the bar and bench across the nation mourning this distinguished jurist’s death.

    He noted that throughout his illustrious career, Justice Ogwuegbu mentored countless judges and lawyers.

    Investigator news reports that the late Justice was born in 1933 in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, Justice Ogwuegbu dedicated over five decades to the judiciary, culminating in his appointment as a Justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court. He also served as President of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

    After Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Justice Ogwuegbu was appointed to chair the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which investigated human rights abuses during the military regime.

    The release went on to say that President Tinubu honours Justice Ogwuegbu’s enduring legacy and commends his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law.

    Tinubu went further to reflects on Justice Ogwuegbu’s pivotal role in transforming Nigeria’s judiciary into an institution where justice prevails without fear or favour, while believing that Justice Ogwuegbu’s championing the values of discipline, excellence, and integrity throughout his life has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal landscape.

    The President emphasises that Justice Ogwuegbu’s steadfast dedication to discipline, excellence, and integrity has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal landscape.

    According to President Tinubu, Justice Ogwuegbu’s landmark judgments, particularly those on federalism, university autonomy, individual rights under the Nigerian Constitution, banking regulations, and monetary policy, will continue to serve as guiding principles and reference points in Nigerian law.

    ” My prayers is for divine comfort for the family of the late elder statesman and eternal peace for Justice Ogwuegbu’s soul.”

    The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has extended warm congratulations to his Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Barrister Tobechukwu Kenechukwu Nweke, and other lawyers from Anambra State, on their prestigious elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC).

    In a congratulatory message signed by his Chief Press Secretary,Mr Christian Aburime, Governor Soludo stated that this esteemed recognition is an acknowledgement of Barrister Nweke’s outstanding achievements and dedication to the legal profession.

    As a distinguished graduate of the University of Nigeria, Enugu and the Nigerian Law School, Barrister Nweke has continually exemplified the highest standards of legal practice and professional integrity.

    The Governor went further to reaffirm that Barrister Nweke has demonstrated expertise in his various areas of practice, including Litigation, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Election Petition, etc., earning respect within the legal community as a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb).

    Governor Soludo, therefore, wished the new SANs more success as he also expressed confidence in Barrister Nweke to continue to excel by making more impactful contributions to the justice sector reforms in Anambra State as well as the legal profession in Nigeria.

    A tribunal, Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal(CCPT) sitting in Abuja,on Friday, June 7, in a unanimous decision by its three-member panel led By Thomas Okusu has ordered MultiChoice Nigeria Limited to provide Nigerians with a one-month free subscription on its DSTV and GOTV services for disrespecting its jurisdiction by flouting its order.

    It will be recalled that Barrister Festus Onifade had sued DSTV, accusing the Pay-TV of unjustly increasing subscription fees without one month’s notice to customers and leveraging on it to seek interim orders, and the tribunal had previously blocked Multichoice from raising subscription fees without proper notice, based on a lawsuit by Barrister Festus Onifade who claimed the eight-day notice given for the price increase was inadequate.

    The tribunal also awarded a fine of N150 million against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited for disrespecting its orders as they have subsequently fixed July 3 to hear the substantive action that was instituted against the company.

    The Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has approved the appointment of three distinguished individuals to fill the vacant positions in the Anambra State Judicial Service Commission.

    The new appointees are Dr. (Mrs.) Ifeyinwa Obegolu,Hon. (Dr.) Ben Nwankwo and Hon. Adol Victor Ezeoke

    In a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary,Mr Christian Aburime stated that these appointments are in line with the Governor’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary in Anambra State and ensuring a fair, efficient, and independent judicial system.

    The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially sworn in thirteen newly High Court judges. The swearing-in ceremony took place today at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House in Ikeja.

    Among the new judges are Hon. Justice Azeez, Fimisola Augusta, and Hon. Justice George, Alfred Akingbola, who bring a wealth of experience and dedication to their new roles. The roster also includes Hon. Justice Badejo-Okusanya, Yewande Jokotola, and Hon. Justice Shonubi, Adenike Kudirat, both noted for their legal acumen and commitment to justice.

    The ceremony highlighted the commitment of the Lagos State government to strengthening the judiciary and ensuring swift and fair administration of justice. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the critical role these judges will play in upholding the rule of law and addressing the backlog of cases in the state’s legal system.

    Nine alumni of the Faculty of Law of the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, Lagos have been appointed judges of the Lagos High Court.

    The nine were part of the 13 judges recently appointed to the Lagos State High Court.

    The institution disclosed this in a post on its X handle on Monday, 20 May, 2024, stating that the number is the highest ever recorded at a given time by the institution.

    The statement read, “The alumni are: Hon. Justice Sunmonu Tunde Bashiru, Hon. Justice Alebiosu Olawale Lawal, Hon. Justice Anjorin-Ajose Tanimola Abdulwaheed, Hon. Justice Muyodeen Abdul-Raheem Tejumade, Hon. Justice George Alfred Akingbola, Hon. Justice Balogun Adegboyega Ganiu, Hon. Justice Badejo-Okusanya Yewande Jokotola, Hon. Justice Ojuromi Nalirat Olayinka Oluwatosin and Hon. Justice Adewale Russel Musiliu.

    The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello while congratulating the new judges noted that an appointment into such an exalted position was not a mean feat but a testament to their hard work, sacrifice and dedication to the noble profession – Law, as well as their impactful contributions to the Lagos State judiciary.

    Olatunji-Bello attributed the feat of the judges to, amongst other things, the solid foundation of excellence at the Faculty of Law of the university upon which they built their respective careers while urging them to be above board and serve with the fear of God in their new positions.

    The Clerk/Head Legislative Service, Imo State House Of Assembly, Chinelo Adaora Emeghara, Esq, has pledged to continue to align with the progress, welfare, development and empowerment of female lawyers in Imo State.

    Mrs Emeghara gave the assurance on Thursday, May 16, 2024, when she received in audience the members of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum, NBAWF, Imo State Chapter, led by their State lead, Chetachi Success Udeh, Esq, who paid her a courtesy visit in her office at the Imo State House Of Assembly complex, Owerri.

    The Clerk who felt honoured by the visit expressed delight that the visit was an open endorsement by women groups supporting the progress of their fellow women in leadership positions and public offices.

    *’I welcome you all to my office. I feel honoured, and I am very proud of this Association. Your State lead has always kept me informed about the activities and progress of this noble forum. I will continue to align myself with female lawyers, particularly, this group”,she stated

    Mrs Emeghara, while assuring the group of her assistance and continued support, accepted their request to be the Special Guest in the forthcoming Health Week workshop for female lawyers, scheduled to take place in the third week of June 2024.

    Earlier in her address, the State lead of Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum, NBAWF, Chetachi Success Udeh, Esq, informed the Clerk that the purpose of the visit was to formally congratulate her for being the first substantive female Clerk of the Imo State House Of Assembly, stating that her sterling leadership acumen has left an indelible mark on the annals of the State legislative history”.

    Bar Success went further to disclosed that the Women forum is an arm of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, which was established under the provisions of Eight Schedule of the NBA Constitution 2015 (As Amended) in 2021 and is led by an Executive Committee headed by Mrs Chinyere Okorocha, along with Committee Heads, State leads, Branch facilitators and Six esteemed council members, made up of eminent professional and legal luminaries.

    She opined that the Clerk’s exemplary leadership qualities is one characterized by a rare blend of competence, compassion and commitment to excellence, and which have not only distinguished her in her role but have also served as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring female leaders across the legal community and indeed women in all other professions”,she said
    Chetachi Success Udeh, Esq, highlighted some of the objectives of NBAWF such as addressing matters of interest to female lawyers in Nigeria,encouraging efficient and impactful networking among female lawyers,serving as an influential voice for female lawyers in Nigerian society and beyond and establishing a platform to foster a global outlook, perspective and reach among female lawyers.

    While appealing for assistance in their listed areas of need, the State lead of NBAWF formally requested the Clerk/Head Legislative Service to be the Special Guest during the health week workshop of the forum coming up soon.
