2023: Again, PDP adjusts dates for primaries

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has modified the dates of the party’s primaries preceding the general election of 2023.

Mr. Hakeem Amode, the party’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos State.

According to him, the new date for the party’s primary election for seats in the State Houses of Assembly and the House of Representatives is May 22.

Meanwhile, the Senate primary remained May 23.

He urged members of the party and the general public to take note of the new dates.

Prior to the most recent change, the party had scheduled its House of Assembly primary for May 21, while the House of Representatives primary was set for May 22.
In contrast, the previously adjusted dates of the primaries for the Senate and governorship, which were previously scheduled for May 23 and May 26, were not altered by the new adjustment.
NAN reports that the party’s presidential primary has been scheduled for May 28 and 29.

Let’s work with whoever wins the primary — Vice President Osinbajo

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, stated on Thursday in Rivers State that regardless of the number of candidates vying for the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket, they must be willing to rally around and support whoever emerges as the candidate in the upcoming primary elections.

As he stated, there was no need for hostility among aspirants because the ultimate objective remained national unity.

According to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, on Friday, Osinbajo spoke in Rivers as part of his nationwide consultations with APC stakeholders and delegates.

Osinbajo stated in rivers that the APC has the greatest potential to do the best for Nigeria.

In his call for unity, the Vice President noted that all those who had declared their intention to run for president under the APC were progressives.

He stated, “We are all progressives, and we share the belief that this country can be made better; that we can improve the lives of our youth; and that our nation can be a wonderful place.” Given the opportunity, each of us possesses this aspiration and is capable of achieving it.

“Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve emphasised that there is no need for any type of conflict, especially among presidential candidates. All of us, as candidates for the presidency, have worked or eaten together at one point or another. We are aspirants now, but only one person will emerge, and we must be prepared to work with that individual.”

According to him, the best candidate should be selected as the party’s 2023 presidential nominee.

The Vice President also remarked that the ruling APC had the greatest potential to advance Nigeria’s development and ensure its continued progress.

“We are, of course, completely in agreement that the party needs to be unified. To ensure the unity of the aspirants, everything necessary is being done and will be done.
“Our party is, as you know, not only the ruling party, but also the party with the most potential to do the best for this country,” he said.

Prof. Osinbajo disclosed the following regarding his consultations with the delegates: “Today, we spent more time discussing national issues and development issues; and we all agree that we have a great deal of work to do; we are willing and able to do the work.”

Before his interaction with APC delegates and stakeholders in Rivers, the Vice President paid a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Traditional Council led by the King Jaja of Opobo, Dr. Dandeson Jaja, Jeki V, Natural Ruler, Amanyanabo of the Opobo Kingdom, who also serves as the Council’s Chairman.

Informing the monarchs of his desire to run for president, he stated, “Our country is at a crucial juncture in its existence, and every nation faces its own difficulties. Our nation is currently confronted with some of its greatest obstacles ever.

This administration has faced more security issues than any other administration. But I am confident that not only will we be able to face the challenges of today, but also the challenges of tomorrow.”

In his address, King Jaja of Opobo thanked the Vice President for his “good wishes” and for sending a representative to his 80th birthday party, stating, “That was very kind of you. Let us campaign peacefully, and let us not add to the difficulties we are already experiencing.”

AU, Singapore established framework for the mutual recognition of COVID vaccination certificates

Singapore and the African Union (AU) have established a framework for mutual recognition of COVID-19 vaccination certificates in digital format.
On May 23, 2022, the framework will take effect.

To facilitate the resumption of travel between Singapore and African countries, Singapore and the African Union, through the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), have established a framework for mutual recognition of digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates, according to a statement from the Africa CDC.

The mutual recognition of digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates will permit African travellers to enter Singapore without quarantine or testing under the Vaccinated Travel Framework, according to the Africa CDC, the African Union’s specialised healthcare agency.

Similarly, travellers with digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates issued in Singapore can obtain vaccination passes through the AU Trusted Travel and Trusted Vaccines platforms, according to the agency.

According to the Africa CDC, fully vaccinated travellers with digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates issued in the African Union, via the Africa CDC’s Trusted Travel (TT) and Trusted Vaccines (TV) platforms can upload and validate their certificates through the Vaccination Check Portal (VCP) or the Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC), to verify their vaccination status.

The Trusted Travel and Trusted Vaccines platforms are based on the African Union (AU) standard for harmonising digital passes and health-related screening standards across Africa to facilitate seamless travel.

The Trusted Travel ecosystem provides eligible governments and organisations with access to a network of platforms for health credential issuance, border risk management, digital public health surveillance, and lab, clinical, and vaccination registries.

“The platforms have been operational since the fourth quarter of 2020 and have currently on-boarded or are finalising the on-boarding of 21 major African destinations, including Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Namibia, Kenya, and Rwanda, with plans to on-board all African countries in the coming months,” the Africa CDC stated.

Lagos Hausa leaders warn against protesting the Okada ban

Two leaders of the Hausa community in Lagos State have warned their constituents against engaging in any form of protest against the ban of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada in six local government areas.

On Thursday evening, our correspondent conducted separate interviews with each leader.

In a telephone interview, one of the leaders, Iliyasu Kira, stated that no member could protest.

According to Kira, the Seriki of Shasha in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos, the government’s decision will clean the system.
He stated, “Our people are complaining about the ban because it will affect them, but we are calming them down.” We will not permit protests because the government is superior and no one should oppose the government.

“There are bad eggs and good eggs among Okada riders, but the bad eggs have tainted the good eggs by disobeying traffic laws, riding Okadas in the middle of the night, using one-way streets, carrying dangerous weapons, etc. We can only continue to request that the government reconsider its decision.”

When asked if the association of Seriki Hausawa in Lagos has met since the government’s recent ban on Okada, Kira stated that they have not met to discuss the issue.
Also, while conversing with his subjects, the Seriki Hausa ruler of Ajah, Ibrahim Ngoma, stated that no protests would be permitted in the state.

Even though the affected area where the task force was operating today falls outside of his jurisdiction, he stated that no protests would be permitted.

Ngoma stated, “Right now, nobody is complaining because the law has not yet gone into effect in June. The law of Lagos State prohibits us from protesting, and we will comply. That is not permissible.”
The leaders urged Governor Babade Sanwo-Olu to reconsider the ban because many Okada riders from the northern region of the country make up a significant portion of the voting population in Lagos.

The Iyana Iba, Alaba, Agric, and Barracks ends of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway reportedly descended into chaos on Thursday as policemen and motorcycle riders clashed.

According to reports, the conflict began after members of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offenses Enforcement Unit (Task Force) and the Rapid Response Squad visited the area to enforce state traffic law.

According to reports, the agents confiscated motorcycles along the expressway and issued eviction notices to Alaba Rago Market tenants.

Some of the motorcyclists, however, resisted the seizure of their motorcycles, resulting in an altercation between them and the security agents.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, stated that over 200 motorcycles were impounded during the raid.

Popular Barbadian singer, Rihanna Fenty, and her lover, ASAP Rocky, have welcomed their first child together.

TMZ, who quoted close sources, reported that the baby boy was born last Friday, May 13, 2022, in Los Angeles.

The couple had in January broke the internet when they announced that they were expecting their first child together.

Rihanna had always shown up in style during her pregnancy as she effortlessly showed off her baby bump.

During the pregnancy, there was a mild drama as ASAP Rocky got arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department in connection with a shooting that occurred in November 2021.

The Department had announced in April, that the rapper whose legal name is Rakim Meyers, was arrested for assault with a firearm at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Despite the arrest, the pregnant Rihanna had shown support for her man, as she was spotted during one of his shows, which happened after the arrest.

You Can’t Spend N200bn On Universities, But Can Spend N4trn On Fuel Subsidy – ASUU Tackles FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government of failing to prioritise the development of university education in the country.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, made the assertion on Wednesday during an interview.

He decried the situation where the government is focusing its attention on fuel subsidy which he believes does not exist, rather than showing interest in revamping the nation’s universities.

More than two months since lecturers downed tools, the ASUU president alleged that the government has been insensitive to the union’s demands.

“A government that cannot raise N200 billion to revamp all Nigerian universities and bring them to world standard, doesn’t have money to do that but that same government can raise N4 trillion for fuel subsidy; fuel subsidy and university education, which is more important to any country that wants to move forward?” he queried during the breakfast show.

“You can raise N4 trillion for fuel subsidy in a year, but you cannot raise N200 billion to fund your education because you don’t have money; it is a priority. You can spend N228 billion to feed children in primary and secondary schools, but you cannot raise N200 billion to fund your universities; it is an issue of priority, that is the problem.”

Osodeke said the government has refused to make any definite move to address the demands of the lecturers since the strike which crippled activities across public universities began in February.

According to him, nothing really has happened, and the government has not shown any sign that it is willing to resolve the issues.

The ASUU president listed some of the issues in contention to include renegotiations of the 2009 agreement, payment system for members, and revitalisation of the nation’s universities, among others.

He stressed that no concrete resolution was reached despite the series of meetings with the government delegation led by the Minister of Labour and Employment.

“Really, nothing significant has happened since we declared the strike about nine weeks ago, which means that this system (government) is really not interested in anything about education,” Osodeke stated.

“If all universities are shut down for about nine weeks and there is no single comment from the government’s side, it shows that something is really wrong.”

Actress Yvonne Jegede escapes robbery attack in Lagos

Thursday night on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede narrowly escaped a robbery attempt.

The actress mentioned in a thread published on Friday morning that she was almost robbed by a certain man at 9 p.m. while she was stuck in traffic on a bridge, but she lucked out when the traffic began to move.

Under the Oworonshoki bridge, she urged the Lagos State Government to clean up the area.

Her tweets read:

“Last night (Thursday) around 9 o’clock, a man nearly robbed me on 3rdMB. I was fortunate that the traffic moved slightly, so I was able to move my vehicle before he fled.

Under the bridge in Oworonsoki must be cleaned. This man emerged from underneath the bridge. They target lone motorists, so drive carefully.”

Jegede cautioned women to be especially cautious when driving alone at night, advising them to wait until daytime to drive if they can’t wait.

FAAN, DSS Begin Investigation Into Mangled Body At Lagos Airport

Authorities at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a mangled body on Runway 18R on Thursday, according to Daily Trust.

At night, the runway serves international and domestic flights.
According to a reliable source who spoke with our reporter, the dead body could not have been that of an airport employee because no one would be wandering around the restricted area.

Security personnel, including the Department of State Services (DSS), have been invited to investigate the situation, according to him.
Furthermore, it was discovered that identifying the body would necessitate some forensic analysis because it could not be identified easily.

“As I speak with you, security operatives such as the police, Department of State Service (DSS), and Aviation Security (AVSEC) are currently investigating it,” the source said. However, we believe it is a case of stowaway.

“However, this will be determined by investigation.” At the airport, no one has been reported missing by any agency, company, or organization. As a result, the person could be a stowaway.”

When asked about the incident, Mrs. Victoria Shi’naba, Regional Manager of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), simply said, “We are still investigating.”

She did say, however, that the incident had little impact on flight operations because the body was evacuated right away.

Group Capt. John Ojikutu, rtd, a former MMIA Commandant, also stated that many questions about the incident remain unanswered.

“It happened yesterday before the body was discovered around 9 a.m.,” he said. So it could have happened before 9 a.m., and all flights that arrived before that time could be held responsible if no one reported it. Second, who was the victim or whose body was discovered, an airport employee or an intruder?

“Is he expected to be on duty?” “If airport worker, it should not be difficult to identify him if he is wearing the correct uniform and On Duty Card (ODC).” How did he get into the restricted area of the airport if he was an intruder?
