    Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin, a former Kwara State commissioner for information and education and member of the IPI Executive Board, is the Raise Life Class Teacher of the Month.

    Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin, a former commissioner for Information and Education in Kwara State and member of the International Press Institute’s (IPI) Executive Board, has been named the Teacher of the Month for the Raise Life Class membership programme.

    Raise is a monthly life class on career, leadership, and entrepreneurship held by a high-achiever with Kwara State’s young impact makers.

    The organisers of the event released a statement in Ilorin yesterday.

    “It is also an initiative to deepen social cohesion and build a network of quality new generation leaders in the public and private sectors in the state and country,” said Mr. Ibraheem Abdullateef, Kwara Central Representative in the Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP).

    “We are very excited to announce Chief Raheem Adedoyin, media executive, accomplished politician, and decorated community leader, as the Teacher for the Raise life class May edition,” Abdullateef said.

    According to the statement, Adedoyin is a champion of press vibrancy who has dedicated nearly four decades of his life to it.

    “Adedoyin began his journalism career in 1985 at The Guardian, a stable renowned as the flagship of Nigeria’s intellectual journalism,” according to the statement. Reporter, Correspondent, Transport Editor, Acting News Editor, and Deputy Sunday Editor were some of his titles.

    “He served as the Governor of Kwara State’s Commissioner for Information, Commissioner for Education, and Special Adviser, Communication Strategy.”

    “Adedoyin is a prominent member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), and the Nigerian Association of Journalists (NAJ).”

    He has devoted much of his energy and organisational ingenuity to the International Press Institute (IPI).

    “The Oloriewe of Oro Kingdom, Chairman of The Herald Newspapers’ Editorial Board and member of the Advisory Board of the London-based African Leadership Magazine, is a lecturer at the University of Ilorin’s Department of Mass Communication.”

    “With such dazzling accomplishments in career and public service, we are very much convinced that young men and women will learn tremendously from his wealth of experience and knowledge, helping in grooming better and more responsible young men and women,” the statement continued.

    According to the statement, Raise, a youth development and mentorship life class, held three sessions with prominent male and female personalities from January to March, including Amb. Dr. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, the First Lady of Kwara State.

    The programme was not held in April, according to Abdullateef, Executive Director of Torchbearers Impact Network (TIN), to save participants from exhaustion due to Ramadan fasting.

    He expressed the organising team’s commitment to the project as it was.

    At Rivers APC Aspirants’ Screening: Hoodlums, sporadic gunshots from police operatives stopped ongoing protest

    On Wednesday, hoodlums and sporadic gunshots from police operatives put an end to an ongoing protest by disgruntled members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, alleging denial of participation in a phoney screening exercise for State House of Assembly aspirants.

    Members of the placard, mostly supporters of Senator Magnus Abe, accused Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation and Presidential aspirant, of attempting to sway the screening process for his preferred candidates.

    The peaceful protest began around 9 a.m. at the party’s state security headquarters on Woji Road in GRA, Port Harcourt, when aggrieved members demanded that the gate to the secretariat halls be opened and a gunshot was fired from within the premises.

    Even though security operatives were present to ensure the peaceful conduct of the protest, aggrieved party members could not help but throw stones at the premises to express their displeasure with the gunshots fired by undisclosed security personnel from the party premises.

    Following the tumultuous situation that senior police officers were attempting to calm and maintain a peaceful environment, hoodlums suspected of being cultists descended on the scene and began attacking anyone seen in front of the secretariat.

    The hoodlums’ actions drew the reinforcement of more tactical security operatives, and there were sporadic gunshots, which caused journalists covering the protest, as well as aggrieved members of the party, including suspected cultists, to flee for their lives.

    As of the time of filing this report, the hoodlums injured many people and stole their belongings, no one was killed.

    Uloma Onyeche, a female aspirant for the Etche Constituency I seat in the state House of Assembly, had earlier complained that she was denied access to the screening after purchasing her nomination form.

    “We’ve come to see a Congress that I don’t understand.” Dr. Adoje Omale, the chairman, has been compromised, and when one of us got his phone number and called him, he was furious. A man who is supposed to be impartial when it comes to conducting congresses.

    “The chairman has moved the materials, according to reliable sources.” How come the man who is supposed to be unbiased is biassed? We saw him with Mr. Asita O. Asita, a Senatorial candidate.

    “We are Rivers people, and they are doing their master’s bidding; we have had enough suffering.” I am a woman who worked hard to earn the money you took the last time with no results, and now we have paid our money to the APC, and Amaechi thinks that instead of building Rivers State, he should tear it down.”

    “We heard that one man named Victor Giadom, under the directive of former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has asked him to hijack the chairman and secretary that is supposed to be here to attend and address us and tell us their modus operandi and how the elections are supposed to be but until now we have not seen any sign,” said Chikwe Orlu, Obio/Akpor Constituency 2.

    Dr. Anosike Oduwa Joseph, a state Assembly candidate, bemoaned the fact that he had to spend money on the forms. “Our party’s national chairman should behave differently than other chairmen, without fear or favour.” APC is a party for all people, not a private property.

    “I will resist any injustice, and we will resist it, because I spent my hard-earned money to purchase this form.” You cannot defraud us and take away our rights. We will resist impunity, every power that wants to prevent the majority from contesting elections, and we will resist any power that wants to want.”

    Meanwhile, the state APC leadership has stated that they are still trying to figure out who is protesting and why they are protesting at the state party secretariat.

    Chris Finebone, the APC’s State Publicity Secretary, said that the party congress is taking place in various wards and local government areas across the state, rather than at the secretariat.

    FINEBONE said that materials for the congresses have been sent to the various wards and local government areas where the exercise will be held, but that the party executive will address those gathered at the party secretariat once their leaders have been identified.

    “The screening is scheduled for 2 p.m. and is only for State Assembly candidates.” It’s unrelated to the ward or the Local Government Area Congress.

    “We were supposed to hold a stakeholders meeting at 2 p.m., which we will do.” The world will not end if they make it impossible for stakeholders meetings to take place.

    “If they want to discuss the ward congresses, they will not be held here; materials have been distributed to all 319 wards, and exercise may have begun in some of them as we speak.”

    “They have no business with screening, which is a completely different matter.” Many of them have no idea why they’re here because they were hired to come disrupt something here, just like they did in 2018, 2019,” Finebone continued.

    A man has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly trafficking his wife and two-year-old son to Mali.

    Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state’s police public relations officer, identified the suspect as Kingsley Essien.

    He was apprehended after selling his son for N600,000 and fleeing the country with his wife for prostitution.

    “The suspect was arrested after his wife, Bright Essien, reported to Agbara divisional headquarters that sometime in October 2021, her husband, Kingsley Essien, informed her that he had secured a job for her in Bamako, Mali, and that he has assisted many people to that country for greener pastures before,” read part of the statement released on Thursday.

    “She went on to say that because she was married, she didn’t suspect anything until she arrived in Mali and discovered she had been sold to a human trafficker cartel led by a woman for one million four hundred thousand naira.”

    The suspect’s wife was forced into prostitution in Mali, according to Oyeyemi, but she later found her way to the Nigerian embassy in Bamako, where she was helped back to Nigeria.

    Bright discovered her son, who was in the custody of the suspect, was missing when she arrived in the country from Mali, according to the police spokesman.

    After filing the report, Abiodun Salau, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Agbara division, dispatched his detectives to track down the suspect, who was eventually apprehended.

    During questioning, Oyeyemi said the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that he sold the boy for N600,000.

    In response to the arrest, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, ordered that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labor Unit for discreet investigation.

    In order to recover the stolen child, he ordered that the buyer of the son be tracked down and arrested.

    Shekarau was welcomed into the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) on Wednesday by Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s Presidential Aspirant and National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

    Senator Kwankwaso, who has been visiting Shekarau in an attempt to persuade him to join the NNPP, registered him as a member of the party as his Mundubawa Residence.

    “Shekarau decamping was destined by the Almighty Allah because Ganduje has been mounting pressure on him to stay in the APC in the last couple days.

    “On the other hand, Senator Kwankwaso and some politicians, including Honourable Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, former speaker of Kano state House of Assembly and former special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, Honourable Abdulrahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila, have been persuading him to join the NNPP,” he claims.

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to conduct all primary elections in the state using only statutory delegates.

    As a result, the crisis that the PDP is experiencing in the state has worsened.
    INEC had previously declared the party’s three-member ad hoc delegates election on April 30, 2022, and a subsequent rescheduled congress on May 11th invalid.
    The commission, in a letter dated May 17, 2022 to the PDP’s National Chairman, obtained by THISDAY in Abuja on Thursday, also voided the party’s one-man delegate election, claiming that no original result sheets were present at any of the congress venues.
    The PDP in Imo State was then ordered by INEC, in a letter signed by its acting Secretary, Aminu Idris, to conduct all primary elections using only statutory delegates as provided for in the party’s constitution.

    In response to the news, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a House of Representatives candidate, said INEC’s decision was a victory for the Imo PDP.
    He described it as “a valiant rescue from an impending catastrophic end, as the party would have conducted primary elections using an illegal list of delegates, effectively nullifying the entire process.”
    Ugochinyere also expressed sympathy for the state’s over 900 ad hoc delegates, who had lost their chance to vote in the party’s primaries and choose its candidates.
    He also accused the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, of being to blame for the defeat.
    As a result, he urged delegates and stakeholders to hold the national secretary accountable for the missed opportunity to vote.
    “This situation is a mixed blessing because Imo PDP members can now sleep with both eyes closed because the desperate efforts to foist a fake delegates list on them have ended,” Ugochinyere said.
    Only statutory delegates should participate in the party’s primaries in Imo State, according to INEC.”

Buratai, who is currently Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, gave his support at a meeting with APC delegates in Bauchi on Wednesday night, when he and other dignitaries accompanied Presidential candidate Chibuike Amaechi to solicit delegates’ support ahead of the party’s primaries.

    Earlier, during a visit to HRM Dr. Rilwan Suleiman Adamu, the Emir of Bauchi, Amaechi used the opportunity to re-emphasize his commitment to deliver on infrastructure and combat insecurity if elected.

    Navy arrests, seizes over 6 million liters of crude oil

    In weeks five and six of the exercise, the Nigerian Navy (NN) said its troops conducting Operation Daktar Da Barawo (OPDDB) seized over six million litres of crude oil and arrested 20 suspects.

    Commodore A.O. Ayo-Vaughan, Director of Information, Naval Headquarters, stated that the economic saboteurs used armed resistance between May 1 and 14, 2022.

    Such developments, he said, would not deter the Service from enforcing zero tolerance for economic sabotage and criminality in Nigeria’s maritime domain, particularly in the backwaters.

    “Over 6 million litres of products and stolen crude oil were seized and arrested during OPDDB Weeks 5 and 6, including more than 20 suspects, many of whom have been handed over for prosecution.

    “The use of armed resistance by economic saboteurs and criminals, particularly at Okarki, a border community between Rivers and Bayelsa States, was also highlighted during the period under review.”

    The operation, which was supposed to end after 30 days, was extended due to the gains and successes of Operation DAKATAR DA BARAWO in April 2022, in which the Nigerian Navy denied oil thieves over N10 billion worth of stolen crude oil and petroleum products.

    ABP loan: CBN to take action against defaulting farmers

    Farmers who have not paid back loans obtained under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) have been urged to do so by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    The appeal was made in Ibadan at the Agribusiness Innovation Clinic by Mr Sadeeq Ajayi of the CBN Development Finance Office.

    The clinic, titled “Fostering Innovation and Collaboration Across the Agricultural Value Chain,” was organised by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, according to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) (GAIN).

    According to NAN, ABP is an agricultural loan scheme launched by the Federal Government in 2015 through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide loans (in kind and cash) to small holder farmers in order to increase agricultural production, create jobs, reduce food import bills, and conserve foreign reserves.

    The majority of farmers in Oyo State who benefited from the scheme, according to Ajayi, have not repaid their loans.

    He claimed that the apex bank’s inability to recover loans from defaulting farmers had jeopardised the scheme, and that it had prevented other farmers from using it.

    “While the Anchor Borrowers’ Program has had some success, farmers’ failure to repay their loans has been a major setback.”

    “Many of the farmers refused to repay their loans because they believed that because the CBN was the lender, the loan was a ‘national cake,’ and they did not have to repay what they considered to be theirs as citizens.”

    “This attitude has made it difficult for other farmers who want to take advantage of the loan to do so,” he said.

    Stakeholders, including traditional rulers, should urge defaulting farmers to repay their loans quickly for the sake of others, according to Ajayi.

    “Of course, we’re talking to a lot of people,” he said, “and we expect the narrative to shift soon so that more people can get access to the fund.”

    Mr Olasukanmi Olaleye, the Oyo State Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, lauded GAIN’s initiative to combat malnutrition in the country in his keynote address.

    Mr Mukaila Oladipo, a Deputy Director in the ministry, represented Olaleye, who stated that food fortification is one of the safest, most effective, and cost-effective ways to address the country’s micronutrient gaps.

    Mr. Godwin Ehiabhi, a Senior Project Manager with GAIN Nigeria, also stated that improved access to safe and nutritious food would help to reduce the country’s high malnutrition rate.
