The fact that Anambra State under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, habitually takes the lead on many national indices of development is no longer news.
What would be news is if the state lags behind in the education sector, but an intentional leader like Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo can’t just stop taking the educational torchlight to new heights.
For instance, while education budgets may be like afterthoughts in other places, Anambra State is topping the charts in the 2026 fiscal year with an astonishing 46.9 percent of its ₦757 billion budget dedicated to education alone.
Now, according to a fresh analysis by The PUNCH newspaper, which scrutinised appropriation bills across Nigeria’s states, Anambra outshines peers like Enugu, Kano, and Jigawa, while many others trail far behind in global standards.
This cannot be just a statistical ego trip; it is the culmination of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s uncompromising resolve to transform Anambra into a knowledge-driven powerhouse, aligning seamlessly with UNESCO’s longstanding recommendations that nations and states allocate 15 to 20 percent of total public expenditure, or four to six percent of GDP, to education.
By surpassing these benchmarks with nearly half its budget funneled into learning, Governor Soludo is not just complying; he is redefining what progressive leadership looks like in Africa’s most populous country.
At the core of this significant shift lies a track record of tangible achievements that have already reshaped Anambra’s educational landscape. Since taking office, Governor Soludo has recruited an impressive 8,115 teachers, effectively banishing the era of ghost classrooms and understaffed schools.
This massive infusion of qualified talent has been paired with an unprecedented free public education policy spanning kindergarten, junior secondary school, through senior secondary, ensuring that no child is barred from opportunity by fees or hidden levies.
The results today speak volumes: public secondary school enrollment has surged by 47 percent, while primary schools have seen a 27 percent uptick, positioning Anambra with the lowest out-of-school children rate in Nigeria.
These figures are lifelines extended to families who once viewed quality education as a distant dream.
The 2026 budget’s education windfall is meant to build on this momentum with bold, forward-thinking initiatives that promise to consolidate Anambra’s status as a national leader among the subnationals.
Groundbreaking construction will commence on brand-new model primary schools in 30 communities that have never before had a public institution of their own, setting a gold standard for modern learning environments equipped with digital tools and sustainable infrastructure.
Existing schools across the state will undergo aggressive upgrades through programmes like ASUBEB, featuring renovated classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, and ICT centres that will drive innovation from the ground up.
Two new specialist tertiary institutions, likely focused on engineering, technology, and medical sciences, will emerge to bridge the gap between secondary education and a skilled workforce ready for the global stage.
Indeed, Governor Soludo’s education strategy extends beyond physical infrastructure to embrace partnerships that amplify impact. The administration’s collaboration with mission schools remains rock-solid, with over ₦1.2 billion disbursed monthly to cover teacher salaries in these vital institutions, reducing costs for parents and enhancing access.
A new high-level committee will explore even deeper support, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, receives a life-changing 21st-century education. Bursary schemes will expand to aid more indigent university students, while the digital push, through additional smart schools, tablet distributions, and teacher training in cutting-edge pedagogy, will nurture a generation of digital natives poised to lead in tech and beyond.
What really sets Governor Soludo apart is his holistic view: education as the ultimate equaliser, the engine of economic transformation, and the shield against social ills.
By prioritising human capital in this unprecedented way, he is not only exceeding UNESCO’s calls for investment but also laying the foundations for Anambra to become Nigeria’s undisputed education capital.
His leadership thus offers a compelling blueprint, one where audacious budgets translate into brighter futures, proving that when a state bets big on its youth, society wins.

8,The administration is optimistic about achieving its goals and is prepared to tackle challenges like resource constraints through innovative solutions, partnerships and efficient resource allocation.
According to him, the budget framework is strategically aligned with the administration’s SHIELD Agenda, which prioritises Security, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Education and Youth Development, Environmental Sustainability, Local Economic Empowerment, and Digital Governance as the pillars for sustainable growth and inclusive development in Ejigbo LCDA.
Highlighting achievements recorded within the short period of his administration, Aare Taiwo opined that environmental management and education remains a core priority, with planned interventions in waste evacuation, desilting of drains, erosion control, sanitation campaigns, and greening and beautification projects aimed at promoting a healthier and more resilient Ejigbo, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to human capital development, with provisions for school renovation, free examination preparatory programmes, vocational and technical skills training, ICT partnerships, and structured youth empowerment and innovation initiatives, noting that his objective is to nurture globally competitive, digitally fluent and socially responsible youths.
