Osun East Senatorial District PDP primaries have been postponed due to violence

Senatorial primary election for the Ife East (Ife-Ijesa) Senatorial District has been postponed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to a party source, the primaries were postponed due to a bitter feud between Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi’s and Gbenga Onigbogi’s camps in the party’s Ife East Senatorial District.

The incumbent Senator, Fadahunsi, was reportedly coasting to victory at the Ile-Ife venue of the senatorial primary election when trouble broke out.

“Trouble began when former Osun State PDP caretaker Chairman, Hon Sunday Bisi, and Diran Odeyemi, accompanied by Onigbogi, entered the election grounds.” To scare the delegates away, the thugs in their entourage began firing gun shots.

“Onigbogi unexpectedly entered the hall, sensing his electoral defeat and claiming that the gunshot from his entourage had scared away all of his delegates.”

They also claimed that the electoral officer declared the election indefinitely postponed due to the chaotic scenes at the primary election site.

According to the source, Sunday Bisi, who made several calls in front of all the contestants, ordered the postponement.

“Moreover, the three candidates, Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, Prince Mayowa Aluko, and Chief Gbenga Onigbogi, as well as security agents, INEC officers, and party leaders, met briefly before the postponement, with Senator Francis and Prince Mayowa Aluko agreeing that the election should go on.”

“Hon Gbenga Onigbogi and Sunday Bisi were adamant about the delay.”

“To our dismay, the electoral umpire adjourned the election indefinitely for no apparent reason,” the source said.

Senator Fadahunsi and his supporters, according to a source in Onigbogi’s camp, were responsible for the violence.

Senator Fadahunsi was urged to remain calm and submit to the party’s democratic principles.

“Fadahunsi should realise that the new laws governing the conduct of party primaries are unlike anything he’s ever seen before. The delegates are difficult to push through the gun and machete barrels.

“As it is, the good people of Osun East, particularly the party’s delegates, have decided to embrace Hon Gbenga Onigbogi as their face this time around at the 10th Assembly,” he claimed.

The Osun State Police Command also confirmed that its officers recovered dangerous weapons from some political thugs on Monday at the Ile-Ife venue of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Osun East Senatorial primaries (PDP).

The weapons, which included a gun, axes, and other items, were recovered, according to Yemisi Opalola, a police public relations officer.

“One of the senior police officers on the scene noticed a man chasing another partygoer with dangerous weapons, so he chased him down and recovered a bag he was carrying.”

“A gun, axes, and other dangerous weapons” were discovered inside the bag, according to Opalola.

During the violence, Mr Martins, the Divisional Police Officer, A Division, Ilesa, was also assaulted.

2023: APC chieftain, Dare defects to PDP, joins guber race in Zamfara

Dr. Dauda Lawal Dare, the former Executive Director of First Bank PLC, has defected from the All Progressive Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) (PDP).

On the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, he declared his intention to run for governor of Zamfara State.

He described the APC-led government as a failure both in the state and at the national level, saying that it was tired and faltering.

Dare, who was met by his throngs of supporters at the state border between Zamfara and Katsina, was later met by the party’s leadership in the state.

Colonel Bala Mande, the State PDP Chairman, praised him for his boldness in joining the party and assured him that everyone in the party, old and new, would be treated equally.

Mande went on to say that the PDP was ready to reclaim the mandate it had lost to the APC, both in the state and at the national level.

Dare told his supporters at his Gusau residence that he decided to run for governor because of the security and economic challenges that the entire North-West State is facing.

“I entered the race for a rescue mission to save the State’s citizens. Before making my decision, I consulted with a number of security and economic experts,” he added.

“We are all well aware that the security organisation in Zamfara when it was a Local Government Area under the old Sokoto State was far superior to what we see now in the State.”

“It is no longer news that Zamfara is the most dangerous state in the federation in terms of insecurity, and no one can deny this,” he said.

Due to the banditry activities ravaging Zamfara State, no Zamfara State indigenes can write WAEC or NECO examinations, according to the governorship aspirant.

Dare went on to say that the state government had closed all public and private schools for more than nine months, leaving innocent students wandering aimlessly in the streets.

He bemoaned the fact that “our farmers can no longer participate in their farming activities because there is no political will to put an end to all of these acts.”

Ogun PDP holds primary elections amid crisis

On Sunday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held primary elections in Ogun State to elect candidates for the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly.

The shadow elections were reportedly marred by crisis in some local governments, particularly in Ogun Central and parts of Ogun East.

There was a delay in the delivery of voting materials, as the exercise did not begin until Sunday night across the state.

There were controversies over the list of delegates in Abeokuta South 1 & 2, Abeokuta North, and Odeda, which nearly disrupted voting in the constituencies.

Our correspondent was told that the situation was similar in some parts of Ijebu and Ado-Odo/Ota.

However, Akinloye Bankole, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary in Ogun, said the exercise was a success across the state.

He claimed that minor problems in a few local government areas were insignificant enough to invalidate the exercise.

When reached at 9:05 p.m. on Sunday night, Bankole, a PDP spokesman, said he was still voting in his local government in Ipokia.

He acknowledged that there were some differences, but that the primaries were held, with winners and losers.

“The primaries in Ogun State were held today” (Sunday). In fact, in Ipokia, we are still voting. The voting materials arrived late, but the results are already being released.

“With the exception of a few minor hiccups here and there, the process has been largely successful,” Bankole said.

Presidency: Gov. Uzodinma assures Fayemi of votes of Imo delegates

Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State, has assured All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Governor Kayode Fayemi of the state’s delegates’ overwhelming support during the party’s presidential primary.

Governor Uzodinma also described the governor of Ekiti State as one of Nigeria’s brightest minds, a master of men, and the best candidate for the presidency of the world’s largest black country.

He also expressed confidence that state delegates will vote for him in the ruling party’s upcoming primary election.

The spokesman for the Governor Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Femi Ige, said in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja that Uzodinma received Fayemi Friday evening at the Council Chamber in Imo state before leading him to meet the party’s national delegates.

Senator Uzodinma also told Fayemi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), not to campaign in the state because “he’s someone who is well known to us as our chairman and leader,” according to the statement.

His leadership of the NGF is a classic example of his renowned man management skills. He’s a great team player, a great consensus builder, and a fantastic leader. The conviction in his words makes you want to learn more about the wisdom he has to offer.
“To us in Imo, the giant strides you see in the state, whether through World Bank, AfDB, or other international agency interventions, are the work of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Fayemi,” he said.
“So, my chairman, Imo is your home; we know there are many aspirants,” he assured.
Fayemi responded by promising to use all of his God-given wisdom to get the country out of trouble.

“As a mass boy, I learned the virtues of fairness, equity, and kindness in the Catholic church.” I’ve also learned the art of working in a group and reaching a consensus as I’ve grown older.

“To get out of the woods, our country must heal wounds, ensure inclusiveness, and impose an administration that gives everyone a sense of belonging,” the presidential aspirant said.

Catholic Church has suspended a priest for his involvement in partisan politics

The Catholic Church has suspended a Catholic priest, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, for engaging in partisan politics.

This is contained in a letter to all Priests, Religious, and Laity dated May 20, 2022 and signed by the Catholic Bishop of Gboko, His Lordship, Most Reverend William Avenya.
Father Alia is one of the 12 gubernatorial aspirants who have bought APC intent and nomination forms to run for governor of Benue State.

According to the letter, the church does not allow its clerics to engage in partisan politics on their own.

“Greetings from The Chancery, Gboko, for the Paschal Season.” Let me begin by thanking you for your commitment and dedication to the work of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m writing to inform you that my priest, Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Lornem ALIA, has been suspended from public ministry following a series of admonitions from Ex can. 1371, 2° CIC.

“Ex can. 285, 3 CIC, the Mother Church forbids her clerics from engaging in partisan politics on their own.” “To respond to the spiritual and pastoral needs of the Church in the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, I have suspended him from the exercise of sacred ministry.” As you are aware, my son, your brother, and your priest have purchased party forms to run for Governor of Benue State under the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), which is completely contrary to our vocation.

“This canonical suspension begins the moment it is communicated to him and continues until he is no longer in contumacy. In part, the letter read, “Be assured of my prayerful best wishes.”
However, Alia 2023 Gubernatorial Organization responded to the suspension by claiming that the suspension had only freed Alia to continue his efforts to save Benue from total collapse.

According to a statement from Kula Tersoo, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Alia 2023 Gubernatorial Organization, the gubernatorial aspirant is only barred from celebrating public Eucharistic Masses, but he will always be a priest of the Catholic Church.

“Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Benue APC frontline gubernatorial aspirant for the 2023 general elections, wishes to inform members, stakeholders, and leaders of the APC family in BENUE state that the suspension order pronounced on him by His Lordship, the Bishop of Gboko Catholic Diocese, William Avenya, is a normal practice of the church.” He has been given implicit permission to continue his efforts to save Benue from total collapse.

“Recall that Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu, the second Executive Governor of BENUE State, went through the same thing.” His footprints can be seen by anyone.”

“He said that as stated clearly in the letter of suspension, he is only suspended from celebrating public Eucharistic Masses, but he remains a priest of the Catholic Church forever,” Tersoo said of Fr. Alia’s suspension. He will resume his public Masses and ministry after his public civil service term ends.

“I was fully aware of the sacrifice I was about to make the day I decided to respond to the overwhelming calls of my people to run for Governor of Benue in order to free our people from the shackles of maladministration,” he said. And I am convinced that the cause I am fighting for the souls of the people of Benue and the state is worthwhile. I now have more flexibility to devote more time to this goal.

“I am steadfast, and please don’t be concerned; I am well prepared and focused.” More importantly, I am more energized because I have witnessed the sincerity of the agitations for me to intervene and help salvage the state’s already dire situation.”

“As stated in the last paragraph of the suspension letter, I will return to the pulpit after I have completed my term as Governor of Benue State.”

Tersoo urged all of Fr. Alia’s many supporters, fans, and admirers to remain steadfast, pray, and work to make the Alialization 2023 project a reality.

Ortom to Fayemi: We must put our differences aside in order to save Nigeria

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has urged Nigerians to put religious and political differences aside and work together to overcome the country’s current security and economic challenges.

Governor Ortom made the remarks at Government House in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Saturday, when he hosted the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi.
Governor Fayemi, a presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), was in the state to meet with APC delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primaries later this month.

Governor Ortom stated during the visit that all Nigerians, whether members of the APC or PDP, Christians or Moslems, must put party and religious differences aside and work together to address the country’s challenges.

“We’re all involved, and we need to work together to save our country,” Governor Ortom said.
While applauding the efforts of leaders from all parties who have expressed a desire to serve the country, Ortom urged whoever God chooses to lead the country to prioritize the needs of the Nigerian people over personal interests.
He described the Ekiti governor as a credible presidential candidate who, like other presidential candidates, has the ability to lead the country, having performed well in previous positions, and wished that the APC chose him as its presidential candidate.

Earlier in his remarks, the APC presidential candidate, who stated that he was in the state to meet with APC delegates, stated that it was customary for him to visit his colleague, Governor Ortom, before continuing his consultations at the APC State Secretariat.

Governor Fayemi promised that if elected president, he would retool the armed forces, ensure effective intelligence gathering, and strengthen the use of technology to combat security threats.

The presidential hopefuls later assured APC delegates at the Royal Choice Inn in Makurdi that whoever wins the APC ticket will be elected president.

2023: Again, PDP adjusts dates for primaries

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has modified the dates of the party’s primaries preceding the general election of 2023.

Mr. Hakeem Amode, the party’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos State.

According to him, the new date for the party’s primary election for seats in the State Houses of Assembly and the House of Representatives is May 22.

Meanwhile, the Senate primary remained May 23.

He urged members of the party and the general public to take note of the new dates.

Prior to the most recent change, the party had scheduled its House of Assembly primary for May 21, while the House of Representatives primary was set for May 22.
In contrast, the previously adjusted dates of the primaries for the Senate and governorship, which were previously scheduled for May 23 and May 26, were not altered by the new adjustment.
NAN reports that the party’s presidential primary has been scheduled for May 28 and 29.
