Manchester City Wins Fourth Successive Premier League Title,As Arsenal Hope is Dashed.

    ……Chelsea Clinch European Place.

    Emmanuel lkpeama

Manchester City on Sunday made English Premier League history by becoming the first side to clinch four consecutive titles after beating West Ham at the Etihad stadium as no side in the history of the English top flight had ever won four successive titles, but City have become accustomed to rewriting the record books under Pep Guardiola.

The Catalan coach has masterminded six Premier League wins in the past seven seasons by beating West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium to retain the Premier League title for the fourth time in a row.

This is the first time in the history of the Premier League that a club has won the league four consecutive times, all thanks to the ingenuity of coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Manchester City proved to be unstoppable from the start of their last game of the campaign as they scored the match opener in the second minute through the boots of Phil Foden.

In the 18th minute of the game, Foden showed why he won the Premier League Player of the Season by scoring the second goal of the game.

Interestingly, West Ham United tried to stage a comeback toward the end of the first half as Mohammed Kudus got one back for his team in the 42nd minute, but unfortunately for coach David Moyes and his boys, that was the best they could get as Rodri sealed the 3-1 victory for City in the 59th minute of the game.

On the other hand,Arsenal’s dreams of a first Premier League crown in 20 years were dashed as their 2-1 win against Everton was rendered irrelevant by Manchester City’s title-clinching victory over West Ham.

Mikel Arteta’s side had gone into the last day of the season needing to beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium and hope City drew or lost in Manchester if they were to steal the title in miraculous fashion, but the Gunners were forced to settle for second place after relentless champions City beat West Ham 3-1.

It will be recalled that Arsenal chased Manchester City from April to the last day of the season as they hoped to win their first Premier League title in 20 years. The Gunners expected City to lose to West Ham, while they beat Everton but things didn’t go as planned.

On the other hand, Arsenal came from behind to defeat Everton 2-1 thanks to goals from Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz, but the win didn’t make any difference thanks to City’s victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Hence, Manchester City led by Pep Guardiola won the 2023-2024 Premier League title with 91 points in 38 games, two points above second-place Arsenal.

Idrissa Gueye put Everton in front late in the first half before Takehiro Tomiyasu quickly equalised.

By the time Kai Havertz scored Arsenal’s winner in the 89th minute, City were already well on course to retain the title as they finished two points behind City, who have won an unprecedented four successive titles and six in the last seven years.

Before now,Arsenal staff were seen rehearsing a mock title presentation at the Emirates on Saturday, complete with replicas of the trophy and medals, as well as signs emblazoned with the slogan ‘Premier League champions’.

But there would be no genuine title party in north London as Arteta’s heartbroken players were forced to accept their fate.

Arsenal fans had strolled down the sun-baked Holloway Road towards the Emirates more in hope than expectation of seeing a title-winning team, while some even wore West Ham shirts rather than their own clubs in a nod to the favour required from their London rivals 200 miles to the north.

In another development,Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over Bournemouth and a place in Europe next season with a magnificent lobbed goal from the halfway line by Moisés Caicedo and a twisting effort from Raheem Sterling in their final Premier League game on Sunday.

The result means Chelsea finish sixth and will play in the Europa League if Premier League champions Manchester City win the FA Cup final next weekend or the Europa Conference League if Manchester United with the Wembley showpiece.

The south-coast side had only 39% possession but 22 shots against 16 from the hosts. They should have equalised in the dying moments but former Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke, who came on as a substitute, fired over the bar from close range,as Chelsea were on top from the start at Stamford Bridge.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto rushed out of his area in the 17th minute to stop the advancing Sterling but his clearance dropped to Caicedo and the Ecuadorean lobbed a perfect shot from the halfway line into the net for his first Chelsea goal. Two minutes into the second half, Sterling doubled the lead by rounding two defenders before slipping the ball through Neto’s legs at the near post.

Barely a minute later, though, Bournemouth got one back when Enes Ünal’s shot took a big deflection off Chelsea defender Benoît Badiashile and flew into the net.

The outcome was more than Chelsea fans might have expected after a misfiring start to the season under Mauricio Pochettino.

The London side were languishing in 12th place at the start of last month, despite having more success in the domestic cups having reaching the League Cup final and FA Cup semi-finals

On Sunday no fans were booing or calling for Argentine Pochettino to go as they had earlier in the year. Instead they celebrated Chelsea’s fifth win in a row.

There were tears from former Brazil defender Thiago Silva, who at 39 played his last game after four years at the club. His team mates gave him a guard of honour before doing a customary season-ending lap of honour.

Victor Boniface of the Super Eagles had a fantastically magical start in Germany,as the 23-year-old striker was an integral part of Bayer Leverkusen’s historic first Bundesliga championship in the club’s 120-year existence.

His outstanding performances have already secured him the title of Rookie of the 2023–24 Season. In Leverkusen’s last league encounter of the season, Boniface made his comeback to action on Saturday.

Boniface and Robert Andrich scored in the first half to give Xabi Alonso’s squad a 2-1 victory over Augsburg at the Bay Arena. In the second half, Mert Komur managed to get one back. As the final buzzer sounded at the Bay Arena, the newly crowned winners were formally presented with the Bundesliga trophy, setting the stage for a jubilant celebration of their historic achievement.

Victor Boniface, striker for the Super Eagles, as usual, engaged in the festivities in grand fashion, flying the Nigerian flag in honour of his native country while rehearsing his signature dance move with his colleagues. With two championship matches remaining this season (the DFB Pokal and the Europa League), Leverkusen have gone undefeated in 51 matches in all competitions.

Mbappe Wins France’s Player Of The Year Award

    Emmanuel Clement

Kylian Mbappe was named France’s player of the year on Monday at an awards ceremony in Paris, as he comes to the end of his seven-season stay with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe, 25, picked up the prize for the best player in Ligue 1 at the UNFP (French players’ union) Trophies gala for the fifth time in a row after a season in which he has scored 44 goals in all competitions for PSG.

The France captain last week confirmed he will leave PSG at the end of the campaign when his contract expires, with Real Madrid expected to be his next destination.

Mbappe played his final home game for PSG on Sunday and scored as the champions suffered a shock 3-1 defeat against Toulouse.

That goal took him to 27 for the season in Ligue 1, eight goals more than the next best marksman, Lille’s Canadian striker Jonathan David.

The season is not finished yet, with Mbappe’s PSG having two more Ligue 1 games to play this week before the French Cup final against Lyon on May 25.

Mbappe saw off the other nominees for an award voted for by his fellow players and handed over by Marie-Jose Perec, the French former 200m and 400m Olympic champion.

His PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele had also been in contention along with Pierre Lees-Melou of Brest, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Marseille and Edon Zhegrova of Lille.

PSG’s domestic dominance was reflected in the other awards, with teenage midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery named young player of the season and Gianluigi Donnarumma the best goalkeeper.

Eric Roy of Brest was named coach of the year after leading the modest Brittany club to European qualification for the first time in their history — with one game left they are guaranteed to finish at least fifth, meaning a Europa League place at worst.

Chelsea FC Narrowly Escape As Late Goals Stun Nottingham Forest.

…..As Burnley regelated from Premier league

Chelsea continued their late surge for European qualification with a frantic 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest, who missed the chance to confirm their Premier League survival in style.

Goals from Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson made it three successive wins for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who are now level with sixth-placed Newcastle with two games to go.

Pochettino, who has said his future at the club will be decided “in one week”, could yet lead the Blues into the Europa League or Europa Conference League, depending on Manchester United’s final league position and whether they win the FA Cup or not.

Forest had looked like sealing their top-flight status with a win after goals from Willy Boly and Callum Hudson-Odoi put them 2-1 up, but they are still all but safe from relegation.

They are three points above 18th-placed Luton and 12 goals better off with one game left, so it would take some turnaround for them to go down on the final day.

Given their four-point deduction for breaking Premier League financial rules and resentment at the refereeing decisions they feel have gone against them this season, Forest will see survival as a defiant response to the Premier League.

No one will be happier than Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who has enjoyed quite a week, having being in Athens on Thursday night to see his other club Olympiacos beat Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League semi-final and reach a first ever European final.

With Burnley and Luton losing earlier in the afternoon, there was a party atmosphere at the City Ground.

Despite their virtual safety, Forest fans were not going to let the events of a turbulent season slide as they loudly booed the Premier League anthem and unfurled a banner which read, ‘When they try to keep us down we show them who they are’.

But Chelsea were ready to play party poopers and went ahead in the eighth minute.

Cole Palmer played in Mudryk with an incisive pass and the Ukrainian got in front of his marker and found the bottom corner.

Forest’s response was good and they levelled eight minutes later as Boly got free of his marker at the far post and headed a free-kick into the bottom corner, with the help of a deflection.

As they chased the three points which would secure their safety, Forest twice hit the woodwork in the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

Ryan Yates skimmed a post with a 20-yard drive and then Morgan Gibbs-White headed against the frame from close range, with Chris Wood somehow hitting the rebound over from two yards out.

After Thiago Silva headed against a post at the other end, Forest were denied by the woodwork for a third time when Hudson-Odoi’s deflected effort hit the crossbar.

Hudson-Odoi went one better in the 74th minute as he surged forward, cut inside and found the bottom corner with a curling effort.

But jubilant home celebrations were cut short by two goals in two minutes for Chelsea.

First Sterling, back from injury, curled into the far corner and then 119 seconds later Jackson headed home to hand the visitors the points.

In another development Burnley Football Club have officially been relegated from the English Premier League, after a single-season back in the top-flight.

Burnley’s hopes of remaining in the Premier League were dashed after a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, sealing their relegation from the top flight.

Despite initially taking the lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen’s goal, Burnley couldn’t hold on, eventually losing to Spurs.

With their fate hanging in the balance, Burnley knew that only a victory would keep them in the Premier League. However, Pedro Porro’s equalizer for Tottenham dampened their spirits, and Micky van de Ven’s late goal sealed their relegation to the Championship.

  • World Cup 2026: Finidi George Enlist Foreign Assistants,Snubs Amuneke,Local Coaches.

    Emmanuel Clement.

Ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualification the Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has reportedly opted to snub local coaches, including Emmanuel Amuneke, and decided to enlist a foreign assistant coach, according to News report.

This decision comes after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) gave Finidi George the freedom to select his own assistants.

According to reports, Finidi George is keen to work with individuals who will bring valuable expertise and experience to the team, and is not limited by geographical boundaries. While some local coaches, including Amuneke and Daniel Amokachi, were initially touted as potential assistants, it appears that Finidi George has other plans.

The NFF, led by Ibrahim Gusau, has made it clear that the primary objective for Finidi George is to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With this goal in mind, Finidi George is likely to seek out the best talent available, regardless of nationality.

While some may view this decision as a snub to local coaches, it also highlights Finidi George’s commitment to building a strong and competitive team. By exploring international options, Finidi George may be able to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the Super Eagles’ coaching staff
