The Planning Committee of the Idoma International Carnival has expressed readiness to partner with Audacity of Grace, an initiative led by Chief Patrick Idoko (Oyijunga 1 Of Idoma), in providing scholarships for 100 students across the nine Local Government Areas of Benue South (Zone C).

In a formal response signed by Dr. Prince Edwin Ochai, President of the Planning Committee, the Carnival acknowledged Chief Idoko’s request for partnership in the areas of scholarship and empowerment, describing the proposal as both timely and impactful.

According to Audacity of Grace, the scholarship scheme is targeted at university students from Levels 200 to 500 who have attained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 to 5.0. To ensure fairness and inclusivity, 11 beneficiaries will be drawn from each of the nine LGAs in the senatorial district.
“Our scholarship scheme is designed to benefit 100 university students from Levels 200 to 500 who have attained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 to 5.0. The selection process shall be structured to ensure inclusivity, with 11 beneficiaries drawn from each of the nine Local Government Areas of Benue South Senatorial District.

“We are particularly encouraged by your plan to extend scholarship opportunities to 100 students across the nine Local Government Areas of Zone C. This reflects both fairness and a genuine commitment to inclusivity, values which we also hold dear,” the Committee wrote.

The Idoma International Carnival further commended the initiative, stressing that it aligns with its vision of uplifting the people of Zone C through educational advancement, empowerment, and social development.

“We believe such a collaboration will not only support educational advancement but also inspire hope and resilience among our youth,” the Committee added, noting that the scheme would create lasting impact during the Carnival and beyond.

The Planning Committee confirmed its willingness to meet with the Audacity of Grace team to discuss modalities, with the Carnival Secretariat tasked to agree on a convenient date.

The scholarship programme is expected to be highlighted during the 2025 edition of the Carnival in Otukpo, reinforcing the festival’s tradition of blending culture, celebration, and community development.

The Idoma International Carnival is an annual cultural festival held in Otukpo, Benue State, that showcases the rich heritage, unity, and resilience of the Idoma people.

Beyond its parades, music, and traditional displays, the Carnival has increasingly become a platform for social advocacy, empowerment, and youth development, drawing participants from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

pIn keeping with their mandate as watchdogs of the society, Freelance Journalist Federation (FJF), a collection of dedicated journalists across the country has commended the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iornem Alia for his steadfast commitment to democratic principles and good governance.

In a press release signed by Comrade Peter Akpanke and made available to media houses in Makurdi shortly after concluding a working visit to State, the journalists showered encomiums on the Governor for prioritizing the democratic pillars of freedom of the press, separation of powers, security of lives and property as well as strict adherence to the rule of law.

According to the release, “His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia has, over the years has shown that he is not just a minister of God but a dedicated leader who came prepared to bring succour to Benue State which had suffered severe leadership crisis in the past. His pragmatic approach to governance has placed Benue on the map of states in Nigeria that are experiencing rapid growth both in infrastructure and economy.

“As a leader committed to the development of Benue and Nigeria at large, his neutrality, impartiality and absolute respect for the principles of separation of powers has earned him a badge of honour as a true and distinguished democrat. His neutrality has paved way for true checks and balances across all arms of his government, a true test of democratic leadership.

“In the last two years, Governor Alia has invested heavily in upgrading the deplorable state of infrastructure in Benue with the construction of roads in major townships and the opening up of new access roads throughout the state to enhance mobility and economic activities, especially agriculture.

“The construction of a second State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology clearly demonstrates his desire to not just develop infrastructure in Benue but to also develop human capital. The massive employments and enhanced welfare package for serving and retired civil servants in the state shows his true commitment to growth and development in the state.

“Instead of focusing on his political preservation as it’s typical of many politicians, Governor Alia has in keeping with his vision and mission for a greater Benue dedicated his energy and state resources to improving living conditions of Benue people. He remains composed and calms even in the face of barefaced distractions.

“His approach to security which many naysayers felt was not fierce enough had brought sustainable peace and development to a once troubled state. Indeed, His Excellency has shown to critics that he is truly the Chief security officer of Benue State by tackling headlong, the multi-dimensional security challenges that Benue State once faced”.

The group also lauded Governor Alia for operating an open governance policy and always listening to the authentic aspirations of Benue people who are seen as true stakeholders in the Benue project.

“Governor Alia is a responsible and responsive leader who listens, uses the feedback mechanism and always carry the Benue masses along. He had recently dissolved the Benue Executive Council when majority of Benue indigenes demanded a cabinet reshuffle to bring in new and productive hands.
We acknowledge that political changes are necessary for the development of state especially those driven by the masses. Anybody having a different opinion is anti-masses and government.

“We, therefore, pass a vote of confidence in his administration for not clinging to the powers of incumbency and immunity but displaying sterling neutrality and respect for rule of law”, the release concluded.

Pupils from Winners’ Schools were treated to an unforgettable excursion to the National Children’s Park and Zoo in Abuja.

Early in the day, concerned parents took to the class WhatsApp group to inquire about school closing time. However, Brother Benedict David clarified that, in honor of Children’s Day, the pupils had no fixed closing time, emphasizing that the day was dedicated solely to fun, learning, and celebration.

Parents and guardians quickly rallied in support, flooding the group chat with prayers for safety and thanksgiving. Messages like “May the Lord guide their steps and watch over all of them” and “May the Lord protect you people” reflected the communal spirit and spiritual covering. Muslim parents also offered prayers in their own way, as Winners’ Schools is made up of both Christian and Muslims.

The excitement peaked when Mrs. Onuh E. A., proprietress, shared real-time photo updates from the excursion. From preparations and arrival at the park to engaging moments like observing buffaloes and an ostrich guided by Tour Guide Rose, the updates delighted parents and showcased the enriching experience.

The trip formed part of Adventure Week (Day 2) and was both educational and thrilling, offering the children firsthand encounters with a variety of fascinating animals.

Guided by trained staff and knowledgeable tour guides, the children explored various sections of the zoo, where they encountered a wide range of animals in a safe and controlled environment.

Among the highlights of the visit were

• The Lion Enclosure: The pupils stood in awe as they observed the king of the jungle resting majestically in its enclosure. For many children, it was their first time seeing a lion up close—a thrilling moment that sparked both wonder and curiosity.

• Buffaloes and Ostriches: The children marveled at the towering ostriches and the strong, calm buffaloes grazing nearby. These animals sparked interesting discussions about their natural habitats and unique characteristics.

• Three Different Species of Monkeys: The monkeys delighted the children with their playful behavior, swinging from tree branches and interacting with one another. Guides explained the differences between the species—highlighting their habitats, diets, and behaviors.

• Crocodile and Python: The children got a close look at a fearsome crocodile basking near its pool and a large python coiled in its glass enclosure. Safety was a top priority, with zookeepers ensuring that all animals were secure.

• Snake Section: Other snake species, including both venomous and non-venomous varieties, were also on display. The handlers used the opportunity to educate the pupils about snake safety and identification.

• Tortoise: A gentle giant among the reptiles, the tortoise moved slowly but surely, sparking laughter among the little ones who were fascinated by its hard shell and calm nature.

• Hyena: Though often misunderstood, the hyena’s presence allowed guides to dispel common myths about the animal, educating the children on its role in the ecosystem.

• Horse and Camel Rides: A major highlight for the adventurous pupils was the opportunity to ride on horses and camels, guided by handlers. This part of the trip combined fun with cultural learning, as children were taught how camels are used for transportation in arid regions.

• Goats and Farm Animals: In the petting zoo section, children interacted with goats and other domesticated animals, learning the basics of animal care and farm life.

Throughout the day, the children were supervised closely by teachers, volunteers, and zoo staff. Lunch was served on-site, and plenty of water and breaks were provided to keep everyone refreshed and safe.

The afternoon saw more inquiries as parents asked about pickup time. Confirming their return, Mrs. Onuh cheerfully updated, “Yes,” indicating safe arrival and lunchtime, to the relief of waiting parents.

The day ended with more gratitude and applause. “Thank God for the friendly weather and the fun our beloved children had,” said Sis Ifeoma Christopher, while another parent praised the school’s management for organizing a memorable trip and prayed for continued blessings and academic excellence for the children.

The excursion wasn’t just about animals—it was about connection, learning, and sparking a lifelong interest in wildlife and conservation.

“Thank you to our amazing parents and teachers for making this day so memorable,” said Mrs. Onuh E. A. “The children not only had fun but also learned so much. We are grateful for the good weather, safety, and successful return.”

With sportswear set as the dress code for the next day’s activity, Day 3 of the “Adventure Week,” the successful outing demonstrated not only fun and learning but also the strong bond between the school, pupils, and parents—all working together to create cherished memories.

… Advocates for private sector sponsorship of University Education

The Center for Equity Justice and Transparency (CESJET) has commended the Benue State University management for the sterling reforms spearheaded under the leadership Prof Tor Iorapuu who has held sway in the university in the last four years with utmost dedication to service of the university and state. The group in a statement on Saturday by it’s convener Comrade Patrick Ameh highlighted the modest achievements of the Vice Chancellor in the area of courses accreditation , physical infrastructural development, improved staff and students welfare as well as improved security on campus which has reflected in the overall performance output of students as it affects the university ranking system in Nigeria.

“No doubt the Benue State University under your leadership has made a mark within the last four years and deserve this commendation. ” Our organization is delighted to identify with your leadership as mark of support to challenge you to do more as you prepare to complete your (5) year tenure of service to the state. ” While also commending the administration of Governor Hyacinth for his support to education, the group insisted that one line of support to the university is grossly inadequate to run the full activities of a university, insisting that private sector has a major role to play in financing the university as obtained in other parts of the world”

“All over the world, universities are supported by private sector partners which translates into specific sponsorships and grants for academic development and research” The group called on corporate organizations and individuals who have the means to volunteer support to the only state owned university as a way of giving back and investing in the society ”
The group also commended the management of the university for restoring discipline within the campus to be fit for both academic and character development of staff and students.

We must specially acknowledge the sagacity of the Sir Chukwuma led governing council for there guidance and support since assumption of duty as pro-chancellor. The group expressed confidence that the university will no doubt profit from the intellectual resources and contacts of Sir Chukuma to achieve the university set goals and objectives as well justify the confidence of the governor in the leadership of the university
