Kogi State Mourns Loss of Pioneer Environmentalist, Prof. Seth Ajayi

The Government and people of Kogi State have mourned the loss of Prof. Emeritus Seth Sunday Ajayi, the first African Professor of Wildlife and Fisheries Ecology, who died on January 5, 2026.
Ajayi, a renowned environmentalist and conservationist,born on 16th May 1943, brought honour to Kogi State, Nigeria, Africa, and the international community through his groundbreaking work in wildlife ecology,conservation, and sustainable development as he left an indelible mark on Nigeria and the world.
In a message signed by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Commissioner for Information and Communications,Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo praised Ajayi’s contributions to wildlife ecology, conservation, and sustainable development including establishing the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management at the University of Ibadan and shaping Nigeria’s environmental policies
He described the passing of Professor Ajayi as a monumental loss, not only to Kogi State but to the entire nation and the global scientific community.
The Governor notes that Professor Ajayi’s life was defined by knowledge, humility, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of humanity.
“Professor Ajayi was a trailblazer. He made history as the first African Professor of Wildlife and Fisheries Ecology and as the Pioneer Head of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management at the University of Ibadan, the first of its kind in Africa.”
“His academic leadership also extended to his service as Pioneer Dean of the College of Environmental Resources Management at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and Pioneer Director of the Centre for Environmental Protection and Natural Resources at the University of Ibadan.”
“His scientific contributions laid the foundation for the domestication and conservation of key African wildlife species, creating sustainable solutions for food security while preserving biodiversity.”
“These achievements earned him global recognition and lasting respect. In recognition of his exceptional service, Professor Ajayi was inducted into the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Global 500 Roll of Honour in 1994 and later conferred with the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) in 2013, Nigeria’s highest intellectual honour.”

Ododo went further to state that Professor Ajayi was not only a scholar of global standing but also a mentor, teacher, and nation builder who inspired generations of Nigerians.

Oto-Awori LCDA Council Boss,Hon Abiodun Bags Prestigious Awards For Outstanding Leadership.

Hon. Kareem Azeez Abiodun, Executive Chairman of Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA),on Tuesday 6 January 2026,received two prestigious awards recognizing his outstanding leadership and commitment to community development.
The awards were presented during an interdenominational prayer service at the Council secretariat.
Investigator news reports that Hon Abiodun received the Outstanding Chairman award from Grassroots News, just 100 days into office, for delivering social amenities and setting a new standard for local governance.
According to the publisher,his notable projects include the construction of a public toilet at Shibiri, a new legislative building, a 12-classroom storey building, construction of roads and several new roads.
He noted that Kareem’s focus on serving the community has inspired others and his work serves as a model for leaders to prioritize the needs of the people,noting that his speed and agility in delivering these projects have been phenomenal.

Delta Police Arraign 33 for New Year’s Eve Violence, Debunk Fake News.

The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 33 suspects for violent disturbances and public nuisance during New Year’s Eve operations in Asaba, following misleading reports by Sahara Reporters.
The police clarified that the suspects were arrested for various offences, including drug-related activities, and were charged to court.
Three were remanded in custody, while others were granted bail pending prosecution.
According to the release signed by the Police Public Relation Officer,SP Bright Edafe,the police clarified a suspect wasn’t arrested as a church worshipper, but for allegedly buying illicit drugs in a vehicle.
The police urged the public to ignore sensationalism and misinformation, emphasizing commitment to professionalism and the rule of law.
“The Delta State Police Command wishes to place on record the true position regarding arrests made during the New Year’s Eve security operations in Asaba, following a series of misleading and malicious publications by Sahara Reporters.”
”For clarity and the avoidance of doubt, several suspects were arrested at different locations within Asaba for various offences bordering on violent disturbances, public nuisance, drug-related activities, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace during the New Year’s Eve operations.”
”Upon conclusion of preliminary investigations, thirty-three (33) suspects were found to have prima facie cases against them and were duly charged to court and arraigned before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba.”
“Following arraignment, 3 of the suspects were remanded in custody, while others were granted bail by the court, pending the continuation of prosecution in line with due process.”
” Contrary to the false narrative being circulated, the individual repeatedly referenced by Sahara Reporters was not arrested as a church worshipper, nor was he rearrested for any alleged media interaction.”
”The suspect in question was arrested alongside two (2) other persons in a Mercedes Benz GLK vehicle, parked in a close street opposite Pinnacle Hotel, Asaba, where they were allegedly purchasing illicit drugs from a suspected drug dealer.”
“The trio were arrested together with the dealer, and incriminating exhibits were recovered at the scene.”
”However, considering that one of the suspects is a member of a sister security agency, he was granted bail and released to his institution pending the commencement of arraignment, it being reasonably certain that his attendance in court could be secured through his agency.”
It is pertinent to emphasize that the grant of bail does not terminate investigation, nor does it imply innocence on the part of any suspect.”
“Investigation and prosecution remains ongoing, which necessitated the invitation of the suspect to enable the proper commencement of investigation and possible prosecution.”the statement reads.
The Delta State Police image maker therefore calls on well-meaning members of the public to discountenance the persistent sensationalism and misinformation being peddled by Sahara Reporters, which are calculated to mislead the public and undermine lawful police operations.
He noted that the command remains resolute in its commitment to professionalism, transparency, due process, and the rule of law, and will not be distracted from its constitutional mandate of maintaining public order and safety.

Tunisia’s national team coach, Sami Trabelsi, has been sacked following their shocking exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 3-2 penalty shootout loss to 10-man Mali.

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) states unequivocally that the ongoing APC e-registration exercise is not optional, cosmetic, or expendable.
It is a necessary political reform and a decisive statement of intent by a party determined to remain disciplined, progressive, and electorally dominant in a rapidly evolving democratic environment.
The e-registration exercise commenced yesterday and will run until the end of January, providing ample opportunity for all eligible members-old and new-to be duly captured in the party’s digital register.
Political parties that shy away from reform inevitably decay. The APC has chosen the harder but nobler path-order over chaos, structure over arbitrariness, and transparency over convenience.
The e-registration exercise is therefore a firm response to the demands of modern politics, data integrity, and credible internal democracy.
The exercise guarantees the sanctity and credibility of the party’s membership register. It decisively eliminates duplication, impersonation, and shadow membership arrangements that undermine party cohesion.
Every APC member must be known, verifiable, and properly accounted for. This is how serious parties operate.
Crucially, the e-registration provides a level playing ground for old and new members alike to have a clear, undisputed footnote in the party without fear or favour.
It dismantles gate-keeping structures and sends a strong message that no one owns the APC beyond its constitution and collective will. More importantly, it shows-without ambiguity-that the APC is deliberately and confidently accommodating the ever-growing multitude of Nigerians who are joining the progressive fold on a daily basis. Ours is not a closed shop; it is a living, expanding political movement.
Beyond administration, this exercise is the bedrock of internal democracy. Credible congresses, transparent primaries, and legitimate leadership selection are impossible without a reliable digital register.
Anyone uncomfortable with this reality must explain their preference for obscurity, manipulation, and disorder. The APC will not retreat into the politics of shadows.
The e-registration is also a strategic mobilisation weapon. It speaks directly to youths, professionals, and first-time participants who demand efficiency and clarity.
By embracing technology, the APC once again proves that it is not trapped in the past but fully aligned with the future of political organisation and engagement.
Furthermore, a data-driven membership system enhances the party’s electoral readiness and governance capacity. It strengthens grassroots coordination, sharpens campaign strategy, and ensures that the party remains in constant touch with its base. A party that truly knows its members cannot be ambushed at the polls.
At the end of the day, the outcome of this exercise will firmly affirm the APC as not only the most dominant political party in Nigeria but the party most likely to win massively at the polls, buoyed by the sheer strength of its membership and a verifiable structure across the country.
This stands in stark contrast to the fairy-tale assumptions of the opposition, whose much-advertised strength remains the stuff political dreams-not electoral reality-are made of.
We therefore urge-and indeed expect-all APC members and stakeholders to take full advantage of the e-registration window and participate promptly and responsibly.
This is a collective obligation. Indifference is not neutrality; it is a disservice to the party and the progressive ideals we claim to uphold.
The APC will continue to reform, expand, and lead. The e-registration exercise is a clear declaration that our party will not be hostage to inertia, fear, or retrogressive interests.
We are building a stronger, fairer, and future-ready political institution, and no amount of grumbling from the sidelines will derail this course.
