  • ALLEN AND AN AILING NATION.

    Opinion:

    ONWUASOANYA FCC JONES

Nigeria is sick. We might be feeling the pangs of a struggling economy and the discomfort of a dilapidated infrastructure and even the terror of insecurity, but those wouldn’t have arisen, if we were not sick of bigotry. Bigotry is Nigeria’s biggest problem, even though, our diversity was supposed to be our greatest asset, but the mismanagement of this asset has placed us in a precarious position as a nation, because instead of tapping into the gains of our wealth of talents, those at the helm fear that the talents inherent in a particular set of people in this country is a threat, hence, they work to suppress these talents and discourage the growth of our commerce.

Allen Onyema is not the only Igbo businessman who is suffering because he is Igbo, but we hear about him, because he somehow manages to stay afloat even with all the obstacles placed on his way to growth. Did you not hear him complain about the unnecessary delay he had to bear before he could get the required documentations from Nigeria’s aviation regulators for what they call the Third Country Operators Permit and other bureaucratic obstacles he has had to endure in his years of running one of Nigeria’s most successful aviation firm.

There is nowhere in the world where we do not have a problem of bigotry, ethnic bigotry, precisely. Even the freest parts of the world have this problem, so, it won’t be correct to say that this is peculiar Nigerian problem. In fact, when properly analysed, we may find out that Nigeria is one of the least ethnocentric nations in the world. I have not been convinced that tribalism is one of the reasons this country has not developed, but rather, the insensitivity, senselessness, myopia and corruption of the political class.

The difference between Nigeria and most other countries where we feel that tribalism is less, is that while ordinary citizens could be racists, governments in those countries make deliberate and concerted efforts to discourage official tribalism and any form of discrimination based on race, colour of the skin, language, gender or even sexual orientation, but in Nigeria, it is rather the government and its operators who promote ethnocentrism.

When President Bola Tinubu was campaigning for his Party’s nomination, he did not mince words in declaring that he was contesting the presidency, not necessarily, because he was better qualified than his rivals, nor because of any compelling altruistic vision for the benefit of the country, but because; it was his turn, and the turn of the Yoruba, to rule Nigeria. There were millions of Yoruba people who rejected that campaign message and went ahead to vote for the person whom they consider better qualified and who had better vision and motivation for seeking the office of the President of the Federal Republic, thereby, buttressing the argument, that the ordinary Nigerian, rarely cares about tribe or religion as we might have wrongly been made to believe.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has systematically Yorubanized the country. While he is gradually dismantling his predecessor’s Fulanised country, he has replicated Buhari’s obnoxious cronyism, by showing his apparent distrust or even disgust at other tribes of Nigeria, especially, the Igbos of the Southeast, who were, until, my Party took over the reins of federal power in 2015, an indispensable part of the Nigerian tripod. Tinubu is probably, the first Nigerian President since 1999, that has constituted the nucleus of his Economic team from his own tribe. This is not because there are no better heads from other tribes who could provide the much needed economic ideas to transform Nigeria and pull her out of the Golgotha, but because, the President probably, does not trust people from other tribes.

When you read the trolls against Chief Allen Onyema, the Airpeace Chairman, ostentatiously, because he chose a garment design popularly known as the identity of his Igbo tribe, you do not understand it to be that ordinary Nigerians do not like the Igbo, but it is rather a manifestation of what the head of the government has inspired in some of his key supporters. These trollers of the Airpeace Chairman are not from a particular tribe, but mostly, blind supporters of my Party. I know of at least, three Igbo social media users, who joined in condemning Airpeace’ choice of clothes for their air hostesses. These Igbos who joined their colleagues in the unwarranted trolling, did not do this, because they hate their tribe, but because, the body language of our Party leader has suggested, an uneasiness with anything Igbo.

Against what you might have been made to believe, Allen Onyema is not being trolled because he allowed his air hostesses to wear Isiagu materials, but certain powerful interests within Nigeria’s political and economic ecosystem wanted to register their frustration about the fact that with all the economic and political marginalisation meted against the Igbos, we continue to blaze the trail. It is disturbing to them that Omo Igbo, Allen Onyema, could be the one who achieved this feat, and not one of their own.

If Nigeria wasn’t sick, Allen Onyema should have received great accolades from Nigeria’s President for his resilience and great business foresight. The Nigerian federal government could have designed a policy to empower him further to take over the skies of the world with Nigerian colours, by going into an agreement with him to resuscitate the moribund Nigerian Air.

    LET NIGERIA HEAL!

President Tinubu Shuns Birthday Celebrations Amidst National Crisis

…says donate the money to charity organizations.

    Emmanuel lkpeama.

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrates his 72nd birthday on Friday March 29, 2024,he has enjoined all his friends and associates who may wish to place goodwill advertorials to kindly donate the money to charity organizations of their choice in his name.

The President who stated this in a press release through his Special Adviser on information and Strategy,Mr Bayo Onanuga noted that due to the insecurity challenge, the present mood of the nation and recent killings by the officers and men of the Army and Police in Delta state and recent spate of security breaches by criminals element in different parts of Nigeria have decided not to host any birthday celebration.

President Tinubu who described the birthday event as another important milestone in his life as a leader and a statesman noted that there should be no form of birthday celebration.

“During an auspicious occasion as this, it is customary for family members, friends and associates to celebrate me in different ways,l appreciates this honour of being the leader of Africa’s leading nation at this time and l am working very hard to make life better for the generality of our people and because of the present mood of the nation and recent killing of the officers and men of our Army and Police in Delta State and recent spate of security breaches by criminal elements in different parts of Nigeria, there should be no form of birthday event and placing of birthday goodwill advertorial messages in newspapers. Goodwill messages should not be placed on radio and television stations too”he submitted.

The Special Adviser went further to state that though the President appreciates the gallantry of the armed forces in freeing the children kidnapped in Kuriga, Kaduna State and in Sokoto State, he will use the opportunity of his birthday to reflect and re-dedicate himself to the task of building a more stable, more secure, virile, prosperous and united Nigeria.

House Of Reps: lawmakers kick against illegal extension of Rivers LGAs

.….Mobilises for NASS takeover, lawsuit to stop legislative rascality

    Emmanuel Clement

Members of the opposition parties in the House of Representatives under the aegis of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) on Friday vehemently kicked against the level of impunity being perpetuated by some lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), who allegedly extended the tenure of the 23 Chairmen of Local Governments, whose tenure is expected to end in a few weeks.

The CUPP Spokesman, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, who spoke on behalf of the federal lawmakers during a press briefing held in Abuja, condemned in strong terms the grand plan by the embattled members of the River State House of Assembly to override Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s veto without sending the controversial bill to the Governor for assent.

Hon. Ugochinyere, who described the passage of controversial legislation as a recipe for chaos and lawlessness, argued that the purported tenure elongation of the Rivers State Local Government Chairmen is “legislative rascality and a coup against democracy that is dead on arrival.”

While condemning the flagrant abuse of the legislative process that cannot be enforced, the CUPP spokesman maintained that the ugly development is an “invitation to anarchy and an attempt to sabotage the presidential peace accord signed by the embattled lawmakers with legitimacy questions.”

Hon. Ugochinyere, who reiterated the CUPP stance against the development, urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately conduct a bye-election for the replacement of the lawmakers who defected from the PDP to the APC in breach of the provisions of the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He further said: “Assuming without conceding that the Rivers House of Assembly sent the law to the Governor, the Governor has 30 days within which to assent to the law or withhold his assent, and it can only be at the expiration of the 30 days that the House of Assembly can adjudge that the Governor has withheld assent and not earlier.”

He described the move as legislative rascality and a coup against democracy that is dead on arrival. “Illegally extending the tenure of local government chairmen just a few weeks to the expiration of their tenure is an abuse of the legislative process that cannot be enforced. It is the height of legislative rascality and a coup against democracy that is dead on arrival,” he stated.

The opposition parties’ spokesperson further stated that the plot was a deliberate invitation to anarchy and an inglorious attempt by the Rivers lawmakers to sabotage the Presidential Peace Accord.

“These Rivers Assembly men are truly acting like people and do not hold the sacred mandate of the people. Otherwise, they should have known that this plot was a deliberate invitation to anarchy and an inglorious attempt to sabotage the Presidential Peace Accord. We hereby call on the President to call them in order to avert a total breakdown of law and order in the state.”

About two months ago, the same group of members with a questionable mandate purported to have amended the same local government law. Less than two months later, they are purporting to amend it again. They are now clearly playing Ping-Pong with Rivers State laws.

Ikenga Ugochinyere further questioned, “How could the agenda of people who call themselves lawmakers in a state be to strip the Executive Governor of their state of all executive powers, and they are comfortable with it? If they attach any value to the lives of the people of Rivers State, they would support the governor of Rivers State to succeed, for the benefit of the people, rather than support anything that would undermine him and set him up for failure, including instigating anarchy.

“Every reasonable and right-thinking citizen of Rivers State should rally around the governor to ensure he succeeds and brings the dividends of democracy to the people. The rate at which the Martin Amaehwule-led House of Assembly is moving and trying to ignite violence in Rivers State should tell the police that these are most likely the persons who set the House of Assembly Complex ablaze, and because they got out of it, are now willing to set the entire state on fire,” he noted.

While acknowledging that the ongoing legislative crises rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly have created constitutional crises, he disclosed that CUPP is already mobilising towards the National Assembly to take over the activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly in line with extant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

I’m Ready For Suspension — Senator Ningi …says he was misquoted.

    Emmanuel Clement.

The Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Abdul Ningi, has made some clarifications regarding some claims he made regarding the 2024 Appropriation Act, stating that he was misquoted.

He stated this in a chat with Senate correspondents on Monday, the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum said he is ready to carry his cross, even if it means suspension from the Red Chamber.

Ningi noted that he never suggested that President Bola Tinubu is implementing two budgets or that he was biased against the North.

The Senator went further to clarify that he stands by his utterance as a Senator and not the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum, that it has been established beyond doubt that N25trn was rightly allocated in the budget, citing three parameters money, project and location but cannot ascertain the project location for the other N3trn.

Meanwhile, a lawmaker from Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim, has asked the Federal Government to charge Senator Ningi to court for criminal misinformation and breach of peace in the National Assembly and the country by extension.

It would be recalled that the Presidency had on Sunday described as false by Senator Ningi that the Federal Government is operating two versions of the 2024 budget.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the senator’s claim that the National Assembly passed N25 trillion as the 2024 Budget is false, adding that N28.7 trillion was passed and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
The Presidency also described as “far-fetched and unbecoming of a leader of his status”, the claim by Senator Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central Senatorial District, that the 2024 Budget was anti-north.
Onanuga said the President is leading a government that is fair and equitable to every part and segment of Nigeria. He added that in terms of funding, distribution of capital and priority projects, the 2024 Appropriation Act was not skewed against any section of the country.
