    Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has blasted the Federal Government over its decision of returning to the old national anthem and shifting it priorities towards addressing pressing issues such as hunger and poverty.

    Makinde noted that the growing economic challenge facing the country should be the president priority as many Nigerians are suffering, adding that the new national anthem is a waste of time and resources.

    According to the governor, the talks about the new national anthem, local government autonomy and others are not addressing what will broaden the nation’s productive base, stating that when the fundamental issues are addressed, economic development could be engendered.

    He said, “Our country is in a state of crisis, and we must act now.Our people are hungry, our infrastructure is crumbling, and our economy is in shambles.”

    “We should be focused on finding solutions to these problems, not wasting time and money on superficial changes like a new anthem,l want to call on the federal government to take swift and decisive action to address the country’s myriad challenges,as we cannot afford to waste any more time.”

    “Our people deserve better,they deserve a government that is focused on their needs, not on distractions and empty gestures.Let us put our resources and our energy where they are most needed, and let us work together to build a better, brighter future for all Nigerians,” he submitted

    Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Governor of Anambra State,has approved the appointment of a Lawyer and human right activist,Professor Chidi Odinkalu,the wife of late Odumegwu-Ojukwu,as members of the Governing Council for Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State.

    The members of the new Council include the following:

    Professor Chidi Odinkalu(Pro-Chancellor/Chairman)

    Other members are:Chief (Mrs) Ifeoma Ekwueme,Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu,Chief Christopher Ndubuisi,and HRH Oranu Chris Chidume.

    In a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary,Mr Christian Aburime, stated that the new Council, assembled with a focus on excellence, integrity and strategic leadership, will provide guidance and oversight for the continued growth and development of the state-owned university.

    Following the ongoing Nationwide Strike which started on Monday,by the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC),eight Super Eagles players are yet to arrive in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic

    According to the Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, the eight players are Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Paul Onuachu.

    Efoghe said the players are already in Nigeria but unable to join their colleagues in camp due to the strike which has stalled domestic flights, noting that 15 Super Eagles players had a session on Monday morning at the training pitch of the Godswill Akpabio stadium.

    The players who took part in the session are Ndidi Wilfred, Kelechi Iheanacho, Samuel Chukwueze, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Terem Moffi, Stanley Nwabali, Ismaila Sodiq, Kenneth Igboke, Ojo Olorunleke, Benjamin Tanimu, Ibrahim Olawoyin, Victor Boniface, Raphael Onyedika, Chidozie Awaziem and Alhassan Yusuf.

    The Media officer went further to state that the training which lasted two hours including fitness and shooting drills, plus tactical sessions was led by head coach Finidi George, adding that there would be no training on Monday evening as the players would be allowed to rest and undergo a recovery session.

    The Eagles will host South Africa on matchday 3 of the qualifiers on Friday 7, June and will hope to record their first win in Group C,also on 10 June, the team will travel to Cote d’Ivoire to take on bottom team Benin Republic on matchday 4.

    The Abia State Governor,Mr Alex Otti has pledge to invest more in domestic manufacturing, thereby showcasing the capabilities of Nigerian industries and reducing reliance on imported goods.

    The Governor stated this when he played host to the Chairman of Innoson Vehicles, Chief Dr. Innocent Chukwuma,who donated a state-of-the-art fire truck to the Abia State Government to support the state’s fire fighting efforts.

    He went further to state that the donation solidifies Innoson’s reputation as a responsible corporate citizen and a major player in Nigeria’s automotive industry, noting that the company’s commitment to technological advancement and community development showcases their determination to make a lasting impact on society.

    “With the acquisition of this Innoson Made-in-Nigeria Fire Truck, Abia State is now better equipped to respond to fire emergencies swiftly and effectively.”he said.

    Earlier,the Chairman lnnoson Motors, Chief Dr. Innocent Chukwuma stated that Innoson Made-in-Nigeria Fire Truck is designed to enhance the state’s capacity to combat fire disasters effectively, stating that with its high-quality design and advanced features, the fire truck is expected to boost the state’s firefighting capabilities, ensuring a prompt and efficient response to emergencies.

    He said,”The fire truck has been equipped with the latest firefighting equipment, including powerful water cannons, a comprehensive hose system, and advanced safety features.     The Bauchi State Governor,Bala Mohammed has lost one of his allies, Ahmad Aliyu,Jalam in a ghastly motor accident which occurred on Saturday,at the busy Misau Darazo Expressway.

    Mohammed, disclosed the sad development on Sunday in a statement he issued in a condolence message to the members of Jalam’s immediate family and the entire people of the state in the early hours of Sunday.

    He described the deceased as a dedicated public servant, whose commitment to the development and well-being of his local communities was unwavering.

    The governor said: “During his lifetime, he championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving good governance and community relations.

    “Late Ahmed Jalam was known for his tireless work, integrity, and compassion for the people he served and his service will be remembered and cherished by all.

    “His demise is deeply felt by all and the countless individuals whose lives he touched during his lifetime.”he stated

    The governor went further to extend his deepest condolences to the members of the late commissioner’s family and the entire people of the state, while praying that the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.

    Ahmad Aliyu Jalam,who left behind wives and many children, would be buried on Sunday in his hometown in Dambam Local Government Area according to Islamic rites.

    Michael Tansi Memorial secondary school Aguleri, Anambra State has emerged the overall winner of the National Quiz and Debate Championship organized by the United Organization for Education and sports Development Nigeria.

    The school was represented by Agbo Daniel, Iloakasia Alexander, Okeke Jennifer, Okagbue Cyprain, Dilibe Felicitas Chiemerie and others while their coaches are Mbam Abraham and Aunty Felicia, where they defeated other 10 schools that made it to the final stage with 208 points to cart away with the first prize.

    Receiving the champions, the First Lady of Anambra State, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, stated that the Anambra students have showcased their exceptional skills and knowledge, while expressing her pride in the state’s education sector, highlighting the investments and reforms made by Soludo’s administration.

    She said”Excellence is, undoubtedly, made in Anambra State,l want to emphasize the importance of providing every child in Anambra State with a platform to reach their full potential.

    “With the recent victory, Anambra State continues to demonstrate its dedication to excellence in education”. She stated.

    The First Lady concluded her speech with a powerful affirmation, “Anambra is winning. The Solution is Here!, which reflects the state’s commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering a competitive spirit among its students.

    It will be recalled that the first stage of the competition involved all secondary schools in Nigeria where some schools were eliminated at the preliminary stage.

    The second stage of the quiz competition involved 50 schools that scaled through the preliminary stage and questions were from Mathematics, Science General Studies and General Debate.

    At the competition which saw Tansi students clinching the first prize position as they were presented with plagues and the star prize.

    The second and third positions went to Marta Amabis Secondary School Umuoji Anambra State with 199 points and John Ikwensi Memorial Grammar school Emene Enugu state with 195 points.

    Other positions include 4th- Federal science and Technical college Uromi Delta state 194 points,5th position -Arch Bishop Tech College Ogidi Anambra State with 190 points,6th position – St Patrick’s secondary school Awka Anambra State 187 points,7th position -St James Chatan Secondary School Owerri Imo State with 174 points,8th position -Model Comprehensive Secondary School Iyi Oji River Enugu state with 171 points.
    Others are Grace High School Gbagada Lagos state,Jesson Jetha Secondary School Owerri Imo State,Anglican Grammar school Achi Oji River Enugu State,Better Tomorrow international college Ujevwu Ondo State.

    The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced its decision to disconnect 24 federal government establishments, including the Federal Ministry of Finance as well as Kogi and Niger States over unpaid electricity bills.

    The company emphasised the importance of timely bill payments for maintaining and improving its infrastructure, which is essential for delivering reliable electricity services to the community, noting that various ministries, departments, and agencies collectively owe the company over N100 billion.

    The AEDC’s statement reads: “This is to inform the general public that AEDC will disconnect all customers with outstanding electricity bills on June 3, 2024. Timely payment of electricity bills is crucial for the continued operation and enhancement of AEDC’s infrastructure, ensuring we can deliver efficient and reliable service to our community. We therefore urge all customers with debts to pay all outstanding bills before the deadline to avoid service interruption.”

    The organisations facing disconnection on Monday include: Nigeria Army; Nigeria Air Force; Defence Headquarters; Federal Capital Development Authority; Kogi State Government; Niger State Government; Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and Nigerian Army Barracks.

    Others are: Power House; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) House I; Head of Service; Federal Ministry of Education; Federal Ministry of Women Affairs; Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; Federal Ministry of Interior; Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

    Also pencilled down for the Monday disconnection are: National Stadium; Goodluck Jonathan Athletics Hall; Federal Ministry of Finance; Federal Ministry of Education; Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning (Budget); Federal Ministry of Works; Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Abuja and all other customers owing AEDC

    It will be recalled that last week the AEDC reiterated its call for all customers with outstanding debts to settle their bills before the deadline on Monday to avoid disconnection.

    This move by the AEDC underscores the significant financial strain that unpaid bills can place on utility providers, potentially affecting the quality and reliability of essential services. The company urges all indebted customers to act swiftly to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.

    Last week, the Chairman of Transnational Corporation (Transcorp Group, part owners of the AEDC), Mr. Tony Elumelu, pleaded with the Federal Government to prevail on the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) to repay the over N2 trillion it owes to power generation companies (GENCOs).

    Elumelu explained that despite the substantial debts, GENCOs continue to produce electricity, thereby effectively subsidizing the sector. “This situation hampers their ability to pay gas suppliers, leading to reduced and unreliable gas supplies, which are crucial since 80 percent of Nigeria’s power comes from gas-fired plants” he said.

    A suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory after spending 27 months in detention.

    Kyari was detained following his arrest on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.

    Kyari, along with four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team—Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu—was arraigned on March 7, 2022.

    Two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, who were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, were also charged.

    While Kyari and the IRT members pleaded not guilty, Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were convicted.

    Despite multiple applications, Kyari’s requests for bail were repeatedly denied until a recent decision by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

    On May 22, 2024, Judge Emeka Nwite, granted Kyari bail to allow him to conclude the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who died on May 5.

    As part of his bail conditions, Kyari was required to deposit his passport with the court and report to the nearest NDLEA office during the bail period.

    The court scheduled May 31, 2024, for the hearing on Kyari’s main application for bail about the drug trafficking charges.

    Giving updates, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service of the Federal Capital Territory Command, Adamu Duza, confirmed to lnvestigator News that Kyari met his bail conditions and was released on Friday.

    Duza said, “DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions, and has since been released today.”

    The Delta State Police Command has again recorded another major achievements in the fight against crime and criminality in Agbarho, Delta state.

    The Command which received an intelligence report from a concerned vigilante member in Agbarho(name withheld) on the hideout of some suspected kidnappers who have been terrorizing Ughelli, Agbarho, Warri, Sapele and environs in the bush at Uwurghelli village by the rail tracks, stormed the area and cordoned of the entire place.

    The release signed by the Police Public Relation Officer SP. Edafe Bright stated that on the 30th of May,2024 at about 3pm,the police operatives which acted on an intelligence report, stormed the bush led by DPO Agbarho Division CSP Josephine Ekebuike and carried out an intensive search during which sack bags were sighted hidden in the bush and upon search of the sack bags, three (3) AK-49 rifles, two (2) AK-47 Rifles, and Two Hundred and Seven (207) rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were recovered and the Command has launched a serious manhunt for the fleeing suspected kidnappers.

    The Commissioner of Police CP Abaniwonda Olufemi went further to commends the Division Police Officer and men of Agbarho Police Station for their prompt response to the credible information received, while advising members of the public to continue to trust and partner with the Police.
    CP Abaniwonda reiterated that police-community partnership is the best for optimal results, noting that the command is willing and ready to act promptly on credible information received to nip crime in the bud.

    He also warned residents to shun all forms of unlawful activities, stating that the command under his watch will not leave any stone unturned in fishing out criminal elements from wherever they are hibernating and ensure that they are brought to justice.

    The Governors of the South East region Imo State and Chairman, South East has condemned in very strong terms the killing of soldiers who were on lawful duty in Aba, Abia State by hoodlums masquerading as members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

    The soldiers were ambushed and then killed by the gang of criminals who claimed to be enforcing a sit at home order in the South East.

    Governor Uzodimma who addressed the media on Thursday on behalf of the South East Governors in Government House Owerri condemned the dastardly act which he said occured without provocation.

    Governor Uzodimma urged the security agencies to “go all out and ensure that those behind it are caught and brought to book.”

    He bemoaned what happened as “unfortunate, without any reason as innocent people doing their lawful duty were gunned down.”he said

    He noted that the unfortunate situation was a major setback on the peace process which the Governors of the South East have been pursuing vigorously by engaging the Federal government, security agencies and other critical stakeholders on how best to resolve the problem of insecurity in the South East.

    Governor Uzodimma regretted that the action will erroneously portray the people of South East in bad light “as if we don’t have sympathy for human lives or that the peace process being pursued is not appreciated.”

    The Governor seized the opportunity to condole with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Toured Lagbaja, the Nigeria Army and the families of the soldiers who lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

    However, he reiterated the resolve of the leadership of the people of South East in general and the Governors in particular, not to leave any stone unturned to ensure that the needed peace to develop the region is achieved, while calling on the security agencies to do their job without hindrance and to ensure that those behind the dastardly act are fished out so as to serve as deterrent to others.

    On the activities of the perpetrators of the killing, the Governor who described them as criminals said they were propelled by the memory of the past that is still hunting them, noting that, “we should find courage and appreciate the fact that a lot of work had gone into the peace process.”

    He maintained that the South East region in general and Imo State in particular crave for peace and advised the people to come out and go about their businesses “without fear of any molestation by anybody.”

    He insisted that the governors are doing their best in the area of security to ensure that the lives and properties of its citizens are protected.
