    Imo Leaders Unite Against Politicians Fueling Tensions

    Leaders of thought in Imo State have issued a strong statement condemning politicians who are allegedly using the Charter of Equity as a pretext to stir up tensions and divisions in the state. 

    The leaders, representing the three zones of Orlu, Owerri, and Okigwe, urged these individuals to desist from their actions, warning that their continued antics could destabilize the peace and security of the state.

    In a press release titled “Imo Leaders Of Thought Call For Spread Of The Imo Charter Of Prosperity: Enough is Enough”,signed by Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu(Orlu Zone),Hon. Kanayo Onyemechi(Owerri Zone) and Hon. Sam Osuji(Okigwe Zone)condemned politicians who are stoking tensions and creating divisions among the diverse groups in Imo State noting that these politicians are engaging in secretive and divisive activities, sowing seeds of bitterness and discord across communities.

    They emphasized that Imo State belongs to all its citizens, and no individual or group should arrogate undue importance to themselves.

    “The recent unsettling developments in the Imo State political space: driven by a few self-serving political actors, are deeply disturbing. ”

    “These individuals, hiding behind the long-overflogged issue of the Charter of Equity, are deliberately stoking tensions, causing division, and creating unnecessary disaffection among the diverse groups that make up our dear state.”

    “What we are witnessing is a carefully orchestrated scheme designed to ignite unrest and disrupt the peace we have painstakingly nurtured.”

    “These individuals are operating under the false pretense of promoting the Charter of Equity, when in truth, their actions are self-serving, clandestine, and malicious.”

    ” Their nocturnal political maneuvers are aimed at sowing seeds of bitterness and discord across communities.”

    “Let it be known: Imo State belongs to all of us. No individual, group, or zone holds a superior claim to Imo indigeneship.

    ” It is therefore unacceptable—and deeply troubling—for some to arrogate undue importance to themselves as self-appointed custodians of the Charter of Equity or as political warlords.”they stated.

    The leaders went further to call for unity and urged all men and women of goodwill to speak out against this dangerous trend, while expressing their support for Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, praising his efforts in laying a solid foundation for sustainable development in Imo State.

    They reaffirmed their commitment to the Imo Charter of Prosperity, which promotes unity, development, and equity based on progress, not propaganda.

    Investigator news reports that the leaders also warn politicians who are engaging in secretive and divisive activities to retrace their steps or face accountability should any civil unrest or breakdown of law and order occur in the state,emphasizing that political power is not a do-or-die affair and that Imo State belongs to all its citizens, regardless of zone or group affiliation.

    “We make it emphatically clear: those responsible for this campaign of hate, division, and political mischief must retrace their steps or be held accountable should any civil unrest or breakdown of law and order occur in the state.

    “The Imo State Government and all well-meaning citizens must rise to the occasion and curtail the excesses of these selfish politicians, who are bent on either getting their way or setting the state ablaze.”

    “We urge all men and women of goodwill to speak out in unity and condemn this dangerous trend. Political power is not a do-or-die affair.

    “Imo State is composed of three equal and respected zones, and no one should be allowed to hide behind ethnic or sectional sentiments to hold the state hostage in pursuit of power.

    “We say NO to paid political agents,non-state actors parading as political messiahs,two-faced town criers,gullible, attention-seeking politicians,”recharge card” politicians with no credible base”

    “Governor Hope Uzodimma is laying a solid foundation for sustainable development in Imo State: through strategic investments in infrastructure, human capital development, and trust-building in governance.

    “His administration is creating an enabling environment for continuity, such that his successor will inherit a state primed for growth, much like what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu achieved in Lagos State during his tenure as governor.”

    “Today, Lagos is thriving economically and infrastructurally because of the solid foundation laid by President Tinubu. That same future awaits Imo under the visionary leadership of Governor Uzodimma.

    Considering the many meritorious leadership initiatives, worthy of emulation, of the first civilian Governor of the old Imo State, with projects dotting every nooks and crannies of the State, but never sited any in his home country except for the Avutu Poultry that has become moribond, the Imo State House Of Assembly has called for the immortalization of His Excellency Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe, with the establishment of a Tertiary Institution in Obowo, named after him.

    This was the outcome of the House Plenary activity on Tuesday 29, April 2025.

    Presenting the Motion, the Chief Sponsor and Member Representing Obowo State Constituency, Rt Honourable Kennedy Chidozie Ibeh, explained that the history of Imo State would not be told without the name Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe, as his record of service has become the yardstick to measure purposeful development and leadership.

    According to Rt Honourable Kennedy Ibeh,despite the many durable legacy projects of Dee Sam Mbakwe,no State institution could ensure the socio-economic development of Obowo LGA was established, except for Avutu Poultry, which paralyzed immediately after Dee Sam Mbakwe’s tenure.

    Hon Ibej noted that Obowo appears to have been abandoned, remained underdeveloped and marginalized by successive Administrations, despite donating the vast parcel of land for the establishment of that Avutu Poultry (Imo Modern Poultry), which in itself was abandoned.

    He commended Governor Uzodimma for appreciating the contributions of Dee Sam Mbakwe to the development of old Imo State, comprising of Abia State, Ebonyi State and the present Imo State

    Ibeh went further to appreciate the Infrastructure Governor for taking it upon himself to reconstruct and renovate the Country Home of the Iconic former Governor, Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe.

    While calling on his honourable colleagues to lend their voices to the motion,the vibrant ranking lawmaker said that the Establishment of a Tertiary institution in Obowo in Dee Sam Mbakwe’s name will reignite the socio-economic development of the local government. Rt Honourable Kennedy Ibeh also called for the reconstruction of the only tarred road in Obowo which transversed six communities built by Dee Sam Mbakwe and which also passed through his country home.

    The Motion which was seconded by Hon Engr Bernard Ndubuisi Ozoemelam, Member Representing Ehime Mbano State Constituency, was co-sponsored by 16 other lawmakers

    In their respective submissions, the supporting lawmakers described Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe as a leader who has remained a recurring decimal in Imo State, due to his development oriented leadership.

    They further describe the former Governor as a hero who was selfless, stating that he distributed social and economic amenities across the old Imo State without discrimination,and therefore deserves to be immortalized in his local government area,Obowo.

    Satisfied with the submissions of the lawmakers,the Speaker,Rt Honourable Chike Olemgbe,put it to vote and it was unanimously adopted.

    “Be it resolved by this honourable house to urge His Excellency Governor Hope Uzodimma to recover Obowo LGA from socio-economic atrophy by the establishment of a tertiary institution In Obowo wnd name same after sam Onunaka Mbakwe.”

    “Be it further resolved by this honourable house to urge His Excellency The Governor to direct the Ministry of Works to ensure the immediate reconstruction of the only tarred road in Obowo that traverses six communities built by Sam Mbakwe called “Mbakwe road”.

    The Clerk was directed to communicate the Resolution of the House to His Excellency the Governor.

    Ahead of the forth coming celebration of the Nigeria Union of Journalist @70, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Imo State Council, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma JP was amongst those inaugurated as members of the Planning Committee with eight other Council Chairmen from other parts of the country.

    Investigator news reports that Comrade Nwanguma, going by the list of the 9-man committee, is representing the South East Zone as a member.

    The President of the NUJ, Comrade Alhasan Yahya, inaugurated the crack nine person committee to oversee the planning for the 70 years anniversary celebration of the Union.

    Members of the Committee included, Comrade Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde – (Chairperson), Comrade Abdulkareem Haruna –Borno Chairman (Secretary), Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma — Imo Chairman, and Comrade Grace Ike – FCT Chairperson.

    Others members are Comrade Donald Dedan–Adamawa Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola –Oyo Chairman, Comrade Abdulai Sulaiman –Kano Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk –Akwa Ibom Chairman, and Comrade Wale Olanrewaju — Ogun Chairman.

    According to a release signed by the National Secretary, Achike Chude, the selection of the committee members headed by no other person than the Deputy President of the Union, Dr Abimbola Oyetunde was an indication that the president was ready to pull out all the stops to ensure the fulfillment of his promise that the celebration would be one that would not be forgotten in a hurry.

    The NUJ President stressed that the highpoints of the celebration would be a showcase of the growth and dynamism, challenges and successes of the Union from inception till date.

    He also stressed it would be people-centric and concentrate on all those in the various leadership and membership structures of the Union that contributed to making her what she is today.

    The Deputy President, Dr Abimbola Oyetunde, was not fazed by the enormity of the mandate before her and her committee but instead welcomed the responsibility with a sense of duty and purpose as She stressed that they had a two month window to accomplish the task hence urged everyone to brace up for the work ahead.

    The National Secretary, Comrade Achike Chude however expressed optimism that the committee members are result oriented and are poised to deliver on all expectations.

    “If the body languages of the committee members and their responses were indicators of the outcome of the work of the committee, then we can say with all confidence that the Dr. Abimbola led committee will fulfill its mandate bounteously”

    “We congratulate them and wish them a fruitful outcome in their assignment”, the National Secretary added.

    In another development,the secretary of Editors Forum, Imo State, Comrade Chigozie Uzosike has described the appointment as well deserved.

    “I can tell you that the NUJ Chairman Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma has shown capacity and competence and I am not surprised at his selection to represent the southeast. We will support him to succeed”, he intoned

    To deliver a high-impact health services to mothers and children, Imo First Lady and wife of the Governor, Her Excellency, Chief Barr. Chioma Uzodimma on Friday flagged off the 2024 Maternal, New Born Child Health Week (MNCHW).

    Speaking during the flag off that held at Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, the Wife of the Governor, said the Maternal, New Born Child Health Week is a one-week intensive program set aside by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency to deliver a basket of high impact health services to mothers and children across the country.

    “This flag off provides a window of opportunity for all pregnant women, reproductive age women and children to visit Health Centers to access the services and for all the health workers to ensure that every mother and child in Imo State is reached with the available robust high impact intervention especially in the rural communities”.     Izunaso Empowers Women, Youths On Modern Cassava Processing Techniques

    Senator Osita Izunaso, member representing Imo West at the Red Chamber, has trained and empowered 110 women and youths on modern cassava processing techniques.

    Izunaso charged the beneficiaries to judiciously use those empowerment items to enable them defeat poverty.

    Speaking during a 4-day Capacity Building Program held recently, Izunaso, stated that the aim of the training was to help women and youths of Imo West Constituents liberate themselves from poverty.

    He promised his people that he is going to emphasis on agriculture, education, creation of Orlu State and many more dividends of democracy.

    “We have handed over to them cassava grinding machines and donation of N100,000 each and asked them to put themselves in cooperatives in the different sector of what they have learnt. After that, we are going to assist them financially to enable them get started.

    “So, this is the program that will be on-going. We are going to do it again next year and we will monitor what they have done this year. I told them, if you are not doing well, you will not participate next year. But if you are doing well and expand the scope of the business, then we will invite you”, he said.

    The Senator noted that “this is our first agricultural initiative and we are doing this because we are celebrating our one year in office as Senators”.

    Izunaso stressed that he has a lot of programs lined-up, saying he just finished establishing 200 scholarship to tertiary institutions, adding that loan scheme for rural women will soo commence in Orlu Senatorial Zone.

    Adding his voice, HRH, Eze Dr. Goodluck Obi, Ofo 1 of Dim Ubulu-Ihejiofor, Oru West Local Government Area, appreciated Senator Osita Izunaso for the wonderful opportunity givi to young people from his Senatorial Zone.

    Obi described the program as an eye opener for the participants, stating that the gesture will enable them open cassava processing industry which will be of great support to their family, community and Imo State.

    Lending his voice, HRH, Eze N. Onyeka, Obi the Fourth of Nkume, Njaba Local Government Area, noted that from the beginning he knew that Izunaso is well prepared for the people of Orlu, admitting that he is giving the zone total representation at the senate.

    He described the training as what will benefit Orlu people in the future, advising the beneficiaries to go home and build themselves even as he prayed for God to give Izunaso more strength to do more.

    Meanwhile, the modern cassava processing technique training which was powered by Senator Osita Izunaso in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, and supervised by Federal Corporative College, Oji River, recorded a huge success, as one of the beneficiaries, Madam Chidiogu, thanked Osita Izunaso for giving them hope and prayed that God will supply Senator all he needs to do more, promising to make good use of the items to train others in her community.

    Earlier, in his remarks, Barr. Tochi Ejimako, Facilitator/Chief Consultant for Appropriation/Budget National Assembly, informed that his office saw to the execution and success of appropriation and budget most of the constituency projects from the members and the senators, describing the project as one of the key projects Izunaso attracted to empower his people.

    Ejimako buttressed that “there is number needed about 110 people, but when the advert was going on we see about close to 8,000 to 9,000 applicants from Orlu Zone.

    “The Ministry of Agriculture where the training domecile and the money that is coming for the training were made for only 110 persons. The machines, equipments, cash empowerment that will be giving to them is what they want to do for Orlu Zone through the senator because he fights seriously.

    “He cried seriously to the federal government, he made a very big case before the President and the Minister of Agriculture, that his people must benefit, that is why he is in the senate, and wants them to start benefit.

    “He was able to give me this project and said, okay go and train and empowered 110 persons with cash to enable them buy materials for their work “. He stated.

    The event witnessed the presence of the Special Adviser to Senator Osita Izunaso on Agriculture and Environmental Matters, Emeka Ekwonna, Mr. Victor Chinonso Obi, representative of Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, Enugu State, Barr. Tochi Ejimako, MON, Chief Consultant, HRH, Eze Dr. Goodluck Obi, Ofo 1 of Dim Ubulu-Ihejiofor, Oru West, among other dignitaries.

    In fulfillment of her promise of celebrating with children of Imo State every year during the Children Day’s celebration, the wife of the Governor of Imo State, Her Excellency, Chief Barr Mrs Chioma Uzodimma feasted about 400 pupils and orphanage homes yesterday in grand style with lots of exciting moments to grace the day.

    The First Lady said “Children are our greatest assets and they must be handled with care”,

    According to the Governor’s wife, “Children should receive adequate protection and the best education to ensure they grow up with positive values, as they are the leaders of tomorrow”.

    The Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, PhD who represented the Governor’s wife called on the children to be bold to speak up anywhere they are, saying the government of Sen. Hope Uzodimma will hear them in their corner.

    The Deputy Governor made the presentation to the best schools that participated in the Spelling Bee competition. Concorde Model Secondary School emerged first position. The Mirachi Academy emerged second position.

    In the nursery and primary school competition, Twinkle Star Academy took first position. The gifts were presented by Hon. Humphrey Ikeaka.

    In her remarks, the Commissioner, ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, UNJP welcomed all the children from different schools and orphanage homes to the event and informed them that ‘Mama’ loves them and will continue to make them happy, while encouraging them to be respectful, studious and good ambassadors of the state.

    The pupils across schools and children from orphanage homes jumped jubilantly from one game to another, danced to their fill and had lots of fun.

    The highpoint of the event was the gifting of school bags, transport support and packs of writing materials among other items that made the day of the children.

    When the Commissioner, ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, UNJP resumed office, she did tell her staff that it will be no longer business as usual. It’s going to be work and work.

    That was not mere rhetorics. The Commissioner has moved since then to match words with action. When capacity meets with determination, dedication and devotion, the result becomes massive.

    The ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare under the watch of the Commissioner, moved beyond Imo State bearing in mind the work of the ministry, which among others are providing welfare succour to indigenes of the state irrespective of their location, stopping any kind of dehumanization and preserving the sanctity of human life.

    Recently, the ministry in her dutifulness repatriated a man from Edo state said to have been missing since the civil war. He has been reunited with his family in Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo State.

    In the same vein, the ministry found a girl and her child and repatriated them, through Lagos liaison office. They were said to have been trafficked to Ivory Coast. She has been reunited with her family in Obowo local government area of Imo State.

    The Commissioner has continued to say that Imo Government will not tolerate any form of trafficking of human persons, or harassment and victimization of vulnerable Imo citizens.

    The Imo State Governor’s wife and First Lady, Her Excellency Chief Barr. Chioma Uzodinma on Thursday flagged off the Hepatitis C elimination and Hepatitis B control program in the state.

    Mrs. Uzodinma who’s the Founder, GoodHope Flourish Foundation stated this at the premises of Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency. She said the program will target ten thousand individuals for free screening across the 27 local government area of the State.

    “This initiative is a reflection of our commitment to public health. Hepatitis B and C lead to cancer death. The disease is hundred times infectious than HIV”, she informed.

    The First Lady said, “let’s provide care and support to those infested. The disease is not only a medical one but a communal efforts”.

    The First Lady who’s passionate about the well-being and welfare of Imo citizens said, “disease which can be eliminated, is a viral infection that primarily affects the liver. “Let’s create a healthier Imo by tackling the disease”, First Lady submitted.

    The Commissioner for Health, Imo State, Dr. Prosper Success said, “The program will provide access, improve medical care, provide data and provision of free drugs”, he noted.

    Speaking after the event, the Commissioner, ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu extolled the Governor’s wife, Barr Mrs Chioma Uzodinma for the laudable initiative. She urged on all and sundry to take serious the screening exercise which is made available by Her Excellency.

    In concerted and passionate efforts to the protection of widows in the State, the Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, UNJP together with her team has waded into a reported case of victimization of a particular widow from Umueze Alaoma-Ntuata in Atta Ikeduru local government area of lmo State, (name withheld) whose husband died in 1989.

    The widow, according to report she presented to the ministry, has gone through a lot in the hands of the first son of her late husband (name withheld). The widow reported that the eldest son threw her and children out of her husband house. “I am living at the mercy of good Samaritans to have a roof over my head. Even at that, he would still not allow me to have peace, “she submitted.

    The Commissioner, Lady Ugwu yesterday, visited the village of the widow at Umueze Alaoma-Ntuata, Atta Ikeduru local government to see things for herself, including the isolated shanty of a house that the man in question has caused the widow to live in. 

    Filled with compassion, the Commissioner moved to ensure that the widow had peace. She visited the eldest son of the husband. Meeting his absence, she spoke to his wife to allow peace a chance so that the poor widow could live without fear of molestation and harassment.

    Lady Ugwu also visited the palace of the traditional ruler of the area to call on him to intervene in the matter by making sure that every subject, whether poor or rich, is protected. “A traditional ruler should protect everyone. He is in charge of every subject under his autonomous community, “she opined.

    She assured the widow and other widows in the community that the Governor’s wife, Barr. Chioma Uzodinma is passionate about widows and would make sure that they are protected under the law.

    About 20 people have been hit by a moving trailer at the ever-busy Imo State University (IMSU) junction in Owerri after the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle on Saturday night, leaving five people dead instantly.

    According to an eye witness report who spoke to Investigator News stated that the incident occurred around 7pm on Saturday night with a heavy duty truck driving against traffic and eventually rammed into three mini buses with full load of nine passengers each.

    Already, some of the victims have been rushed to the Federal University of Technology Hospital Owerri (FUTHO), and some were rushed to Federal Medical Center, Owerri for treatment

    Reports has it that five others are confirmed dead, including a lecturer from Banking and Finance department,lmo state university and had been deposited at the morgue.

    Meanwhile, scores of people have besieged FUTHO and FMC to look for their relatives who were not picking their phone calls as heavy traffic gridlock had surfaced on the busy Okigwe Road as people rushed to the accident scene while the affected vehicles were blocking a major part of the road.
